Assemblyman Jefferson Van Drew will challenge Republican State Senator Nicholas Asselta, according to Democratic sources familiar with Van Drew's plans. Â
Asselta, 55, ran unopposed for the Senate four years ago following the retirement of Republican veteran James Cafiero. He first went to the Legislature in early 1995 when he won a Special Election for State Assembly after Frank LoBiondo was elected to Congress. The 54-year-old Van Drew, a Cape May County Democrat, won an Assembly seat in 2001, unseating incumbent Jack Gibson. He had served two non-consecutive terms as a Cape May County Freeholder.

best chance for a Dem pick-up
Van Drew's political future is riding on this one...he should have strong support from the statewide pac's. This might be a better chance than Whelan to pick up a seat.
Asselta in Trouble
Van Drew is more popular then ever. Asselta is in trouble. While Asselta has been in hibernation, Van Drew has been working. Whether you like him or not he works hard and is going to be our next Senator.
