Don't mess with Lautenberg: 84-year-old Senator is ready for fist fight with labor leader

Frank Lautenberg may be 84-years-old, but he's still a Paterson boy who's not afraid of a brawl.  And when a labor leader unhappy with his position on immigration reform balked at including the Democratic U.S. Senator's campaign literature in a New Jersey AFL-CIO GOTV program, Lautenberg had to be restrained from a physical altercation.

According to labor sources familiar with the incident, Don Capasso, the Assistant Business Manager of Plumbers Local 14 United Association of New Jersey walked his members out of the Boilermakers Local 27 hall in Bayonne just prior to Lautenberg's arrival there.

SEA GIRT - It was a happy political scene to walk into there in the basement of the Parker House last night, as Obama button-clad volunteers with clipboards approached Hudson County political operatives and asked them if they wanted to sign on to help with the campaign.

Some of the latter were onetime Hillary Clinton backers for whom the change-up to Obama is a painful perhaps but ultimately natural function of primary politics.

They didn’t need the enthusiastic prodding of volunteers to get them to go there.

"We’re already on board," said Jason O’Donnell, chairman of the Bayonne City Regular Democratic Organization.

DEMOCRATS 2000 AND MONMOUTH COUNTY YOUNG DEMOCRATS TO CO-HOST HAPPY HOUR IN RED BANK

RED BANK - On Wednesday, July 19, Democrats 2000 and the Monmouth County Young Democrats will co-host a happy hour at the Dublin House in Red Bank, to give area progressives and young professionals a chance to network and share ideas about the future of the Democratic Party.

"Not realizing the tremendous impact government has on our day to day lives, young people often feel no connection between themselves and elected officials," said Democrats 2000 President Steve Lenox. "Events like this one offer those who don't usually give politics a second thought an opportunity to engage key decision makers in informal and comfortable settings and discuss the issues that matter most to them."

"Monmouth County is on the front-lines when it comes to spreading the progressive message of socially responsible government working for the people it represents," said Dan Reilly, of Belmar, President of the Monmouth Young Dems. "We're happy to be working with Democrats 2000 to give the progressive voice a forum to be heard, and to bring Democrats in the Monmouth area together to have a good time."
