SARLO REACTION TO GOVERNOR CORZINE’S ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN

TRENTON – Senator Paul A. Sarlo, the Chair of the Senate Labor Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to Governor Corzine’s economic stimulus proposal, which was delivered to the Legislature at a joint session today:

“As a pro-business legislator, I think the Governor hit the ball out of the park in terms of his economic stimulus proposal announced today. At a time when New Jersey’s families are dealing with the fallout of an historic economic crisis the likes of which we haven’t seen since the Great Depression, Governor Corzine laid out a measured, reasonable approach to handle our short-term and long-term economic needs.

REDD RESPONSE TO GOVERNOR CORZINE’S ECONOMIC STIMULUS PROPOSAL

TRENTON – Senator Dana Redd, D-Camden and Gloucester, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and Chairwoman of the School Facilities Subcommittee of the Joint Legislative Committee on Public Schools, issued the following statement today regarding Governor Corzine’s economic stimulus proposals, which were delivered in a joint legislative hearing in the Statehouse this afternoon:

“Particularly when State residents are worried about the nation’s long-term and short-term economic health, Governor Corzine today outlined a bold plan which will help New Jersey weather the worst of these uncertain times.

TRENTON – Senator Barbara Buono, Chair of the Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee, today said State officials should prepare budget contingency plans now to deal with the “inevitable downward revenue spiral” caused by the Wall Street credit crisis.

            “Like families trying to pay monthly bills, we have to stay within our means,” said Senator Buono, D-Middlesex. “To avoid panic later, we need to plan now.”

Governor Corzine is talking about the right moves when it comes to ethics reform. Republicans who have been advocating these reforms for the past three years welcome his decision to join the fight, and hope he can sway the members of his party who have blocked reform.

Governor Corzine has been in denial about how the past six years of unchecked tax increases and growth in government regulation have depressed New Jersey's economy. His economic roundtable is the first sign that he is willing to confront the real problems of our state.

            TRENTON – Senator Barbara Buono vowed today to intervene legislatively to block an Edison special election on a $57.8 million bond issue because the Sept. 30th date for the vote falls on Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.

            “It would be unconscionable for anyone to push ahead with the bond vote once they realized it would fall on Rosh Hashana,” said Senator Buono, who represents Edison.

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Stephen M. Sweeney today said the State budget for the new fiscal year “begins a process of accountability and integrity” which reflects tough economic times and the need for efficiencies at all levels of government.
