“The horrific murders of two Lodi policemen in August of 1963 by Thomas Trantino still resonate in memories of the people of Bergen County to this day, and embracing a recommendation to abolish capital punishment for criminals such as cop killers marks a dangerous and shocking policy choice by the ruling Democrats in Trenton.
The premeditated murder of a police officer is an act that strikes at the heart of a stable and well-ordered society, and the people who commit such crimes deserve a punishment commensurate with the evil they have wrought. I find particularly outrageous the suggestion made by the commission majority that we should abolish capital punishment for murderers such as cop killers, terrorists and sex crime killers of children based upon considerations such as trial costs and the vagaries of public opinion polling.
The ruling Democrat majorities in the Legislature would do well to listen to the counsel of their own former President of the Senate, and the many county prosecutors and law enforcement officials, and reserve capital punishment as an option for those whose crimes reflect the worst instincts present in humanity.
