Woodbury, NJ (July 11, 2008) – Gloucester County Republican Freeholder candidates Phyllis Scapellato and Larry Wallace want Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney to show the taxpayers of Gloucester County exactly where he will save $100,000 before a superintendent of elections steps into her newly created position.
“These guys seriously have to start remembering things they’ve said in the past,” said GOP freeholder candidate Phyllis Scapellato. “At a debate on October 18, 2005 Freeholder DiMarco said ‘There is no corruption. Nobody is putting any money in our pockets.’ I would think people who make statements like that would take every step they could to avoid even the appearance of dispensing the kind of political patronage they railroaded through at Wednesday’s special meeting.”
At the special meeting of the freeholder board to create the position of superintendent of elections Freeholder Director Stephen Sweeney claimed the position would save the taxpayers $100,000. Unfortunately for Mr. Sweeney, when questioned on the issue all he could say was “we will publicly show you.”
“The look on Mr. Sweeney’s face when he was asked to tell us exactly where the savings would be was priceless,” said GOP freeholder candidate Larry Wallace. “My only regret was the fact we were prohibited from video taping the meeting.”
Larry Wallace continued, “I do have to admit I was shocked when Freeholder Brigandi actually admitted creating this position was discussed in a closed session.”
“At this point it’s obvious Mr. Sweeney’s penny saved is a penny earned for a Democratic patronage position. Ben Franklin would not be proud of this saved penny,” quipped Scapellato.
