Not all Republicans happy with Bergen freeholder slate

Bergen County Republicans feel that the scene is set for a competitive freeholder race.

Three incumbent Democrats are up for reelection to the all-Democrat board. There’s Bernadette McPherson, who just lost her mayoral seat in Rutherford by a landslide; David Ganz, who lost his mayoral seat in Fair Lawn to Republican Ed Trawinski in 2005 (although he was reelected to the freeholder board that same year); and the brand new Vernon Walton, a former Englewood councilman who lost that seat to Democratic Assemblyman Gordon Johnson in 2006.

“McPherson and Ganz, I think, are the soft underbelly of the Democratic freeholder board,” said Republican state Sen. Gerald Cardinale.

Add to the chastened incumbents a few local circumstances, like the growing EnCap controversy, the indictment of former Democratic state Sen. Joe Coniglio and having the popular Republican Kathleen Donovan on the ballot for reelection as county clerk, and some Republicans feel that they have the makings for a good race and a chance to win a Freeholder seat for the first time since Lisa Randall won one in 2003.

“The (Democrats) each have baggage,” said Republican strategist Thom Ammirato. “You’ve got great issues floating around them.”

But Ammirato is concerned that his party could be its own worst enemy.

The party’s policy committee met last week and recommended three candidates for endorsement by the county committee. On the ballot at Thursday’s convention with asterisks next to their names will be Paul Duggan, who ran last year and is running this time to take on Walton for the unexpired term of former Freeholder Connie Wagner; Deirdre Woodbyrne, a Ramsey resident who’s Vice-Chair of the Bergen County Young Republicans; and former Ramsey Councilman Jeffrey Heller.

Passed over for the committee’s endorsement was Christopher Calabrese, a 32-year-old from Upper Saddle River who runs a real estate business in McPherson’s home turf of Rutherford. But Calabrese intends to continue to fight for the organization line, and he’s got some influential people behind him.

Calabrese’s backers champion his age and wealth. He’s already got $25,000 lined up and pledged to raise $100,000 by June.

“We’ve been losing because we don’t have resources,” said Ammirato, who’s also concerned about having two candidates from Ramsey on the same ticket. “Money does matter, despite what some people think.”

Calabrese’s candidacy was crippled by former state Senate candidate Clara Nibot, who sits on the screening committee, and 39th district Republican chair Mike Ryan, who stood up and announced that he endorsed Heller. After Calabrese gave a speech that members considered less-than-impassioned, Nibot got up and asked how long he had been a registered Republican. The answer: one year. Until then, he had been undeclared, but said that he always voted Republican.

“I know that I was the reason that Mr. Calabrese was not chosen,” said Nibot. “You’re talking about representing the Republican Party and you want to run for the Republican organization and you just became a Republican?”

Nibot said that Calabrese should have revealed his recent party conversion in his resume, which she described as “very poor.”

“Ok, he registered Republcian last year, but why does he not want to mention this?” she said.

Nibot also said that she’s worried about Democrats infiltrating the Republican ticket to sabotage the race.

But to Republican activist and fundraiser Joe Caruso, who founded Red Faction Political Action Committee, said that Calabrese’s recent party registration shouldn’t be an issue.

“If that’s such an issue then Reagan should never have been president,” he said.

Caruso said that he has nothing against the other candidates, and is particularly happy with Deidre Woodbyrne, another 30-something candidate who he helped recruit (Cardinale, taken with her speech in front of the committee, said that “she’s like an Obama”). But Calabrese, he said, has the time and the money to devote to make this a competitive race.

“Why don’t we listen to what his ideas are? The deliverance of his speech could have been better, but his speech was really good,” he said.

Some Republicans lament that such a large screening committee had a say in the process, and contrast the open style of the BCRO unfavorably to the one-man rule of their Democratic counterparts under Chairman Joe Ferriero. Republican Chairman Rob Ortiz has taken some slack for this, along with criticism that he couldn’t deliver the policy committee’s votes to recommend Anne Evans Estabrook for U.S. Senate, despite his own endorsement.

But Ortiz doesn’t take issue with the way the committee made the decision, and said that having two candidates from the same town isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“I think it’s just a testament to the strength of the candidates coming from that particular town,” he said. “They are a shining example of a very strong republican club, a very strong republican town.”

But whether the Freeholder candidates really do have a shot against the better funded Democrats depends largely on what goes on at the top of the ticket. Republican freeholder candidates tend to do better in off-year elections, and 2008 is anything but that.

But the Republicans say that Barack Obama will work better for them than Hillary Clinton, who is sure to have the BCDO apparatus in full gear if she’s the nominee.

“How well or poorly we do will depend a lot on how McCain does, on how I hope (U.S. Senate candidate Joe) Pennacchio does, and how (congressional candidates) Vince Micco and Scott Garrett do,” said Bob Yudin, who ran for freeholder last year and endorsed Duggan and Heller.

Democrats respond that the Republicans might as well just stop trying.

“Wishful thinking. We hear this rhetoric every year from the Republicans and every year they lose,” said BCDO Bill Maer. “We are going to run our usual, very well-organized campaign. Our three incumbents have great records, are proud of their records, and we are going to make sure that they are victorious in November.”

What record?

I like the "Hillary speak" of claiming to have a record, but never mentioning that record to the voter.

Will McPherson offer Bergen what she offered Rutherford? Fiscal chaos, high taxes and the EnCap debacle?

Will Ganz offer Bergen more of the same mismanagement that saw him tossed from office in Fair Lawn?

If you can't get re-elected locally, what makes you think you can be elevated to higher office?

Vernon Walton is an unknown political commodity. Will he campaign in S Bergen?

Is he electable? Again, if your rejected by Democrats in your own community in a party primary, how do you make the case for higher office?

Only the Bergen Republicans would put two people from the same town on the ticket. That means if they were to win you would have three residents of Ramsey on the Board of Freeholders!

Is Ortiz this incompetent that he can't offer his party a geographically balanced ticket?

What a circus.

Money is not everything

Clara Nibot asked the most important question at the Policy Committee Screening. We need candidates we can trust. people that will have the credibility to motivate Republicans to come out to vote for them. If money is the only issue Bob Yudin should be a Freeholder for years because he  has given $100,000.00 to the BCRO every time he run. District 39th delivers the strongest Republican vote in Bergen County as well as the best activists and campaign workers. That is why we have a State Senator, a Congressman and we had various Freeholders from there. If we can get a great turnout there and with Paul Dugan the same from below Route 4. We will win!. We don't need to have individual towns represented in the Freeholder race or sell the seat. What we need is electable candidates that can motivate people. Nibot question made me change my mind at the time of voting and I'm not from Ramsey. I just want Republicans to win.

All Republican candidates are good

All four candidates are good candidates. It should not matter what towns they represent, but rather what they bring to the election process. Let's hope that Chris Calabrese will not take it personally and will stick around and raise money for the campaign. We all need to be in this together. Eventual wins in November would be critical for GOP to move forward in Bergen Co.

I would not count on the Presidential election nor the US Senate campaign to help Bergen Co. at all. Freeholder race will be a separate issue from other campaigns. Republicans have a strong advantage in local issues here.

Bergen Republican Riddle

Clara maybe on to something here.
So when is a Democrat or an Independant a Republican ?
Answer is when they can buy a nomination without working on prior county campaigns.
The same can be said for Dr Murray too

republican candidates

Clara Nibot couldn't raise enough money to get a Clean Election disignation for her Senate campaign. As long as someone like her can determine who Republican candidates will be, the Dems have nothing to worry about.

03/04/08 8:59 am

Democrats not happy with their Freeholders too

ok. Nothing is perfect in politics.
However the Dems dont need the Queen of Encap
and the Duke of Bergens own chosen Jester Walton and the Earl of Ganz on the stage this year either, as they are all very flawed candidates.

reality check

where to start ...where to start ... where to start.  Easy stuff first.  No Virginia (or is it Clara) , there is no $100,000 per yr from Bob Y.  Go to  http://www.elec.state.nj.us/ if you wanna see how much he put in but it's not even in the same neighborhood. Not that he should be expected to put up $300k of his own money and he does deserve some respect for putting his name out there, but 3 enormous losses does not a credible candidate for chairman make. Let's just keep the discussion grounded in reality, ok?  In fact, more than $300k was wasted last year on a pointless and unwinnable primary effort that Bob supported.  Believe it or not, over the past 2 years, more money has been spent/wasted on primaries involving Bob than on electing Republicans to county office in the general elections.  Sounds more like a net financial drain than an investment of resources..............................2nd, you're making it sound like the Nibot question was a difference maker.  It was not.  There was no gasp, no "a-ha" moment.  It was a question asked and answered without fanfare or reaction.  If it made the difference in the minds of 3 voters, it's alot.  No one thinks it was all that important except Clara.  Additonally, it is about the dumbest reason I can think of to not support a candidate.  This guy registers young and doesn't declare, which is not uncommon.  Over the years he consistently votes Republican, supports Republicans and decides that he wants to identify with republicans.  Now the question is, should the party welcome and encourage  bright young energetic people who seek to join or, as Clara suggests, do we punish them for making their decision later in life than we would have preferred.  The Bergen GOP did nothing in the late 90s into the 00s to recruit young people and it almost killed the party.  Now things are getting better, young people are stepping up and people are looking to freeze them out.  Unbelievable!............................This slate thing is by no means over.  The policy committee vote was largely a beauty contest and anything can happen on thursday night.  In fact, if D-39 is so strong for republicans, then R's should be able to count on winning there no matter what.  That being the case, Calabrese, with strong business connections in Rutherford/south Bergen makes a lot more sense if you want to reach out to more people and drive them to the polls.  Heller seems like a good guy and a competent guy,  but loading up on 2 candidates from one town may not be the best way to create broad based appeal.  Moreover, if we're basing things on performance at the Policy committee meeting, Woodbyrne is, by far, the best candidate the R's have and absolutely has to be on the ticket.......................There is a geographically balanced ticket offered.  The county comm has to decide whether they want to choose it or go in a different direction.  The important thing is, unlike the Dem machine, it's an actual choice that they get to make.  No one is "buying" a spot, but Energizer is delusional if she thinks that money and access to resources don't matter.  You can be the most competent candidate in the world and if you don't have the money to communicate your message, you're not getting elected.  Conversely, as the BCDO has proven time and time again, with enough money, you can elect a ham sandwich.  Sometimes you can even elect 7 or 8 of them..................And don't believe Maer's bravado.  2 of the BCDO "all stars" have already been shown the door by the people who know them best.  They are vulnerable and they know it.

This year will tell all for the Bergen GOP

If the whiny Bergen GOP can't beat these three Democrats who lost their last elections, two former dual office holding mayors who were bounced out of local office and a former councilman who couldn't win his own ward last time, then it won't say much about the Bergen GOP and the ability to seize on opportunity.

If they could stop all the in fighting and focus, maybe then voters might take them seriously.

But no one sees that happening anytime soon.

Failcopter Flight Lessons

Dear Chris Calabrese:
So you want learn to pilot the Failcopter! Terrific!  Welcome to Failcopter training school. The BCRO is a great place (some would say "The Best!") to learn Failcoptering skillz!

Your Failcopter Flight Instructor will be Ms. Clara Nibot.

Flight Instructor Nibot once wanted to fly high in her failcopter. She dreamt, as a young girl, of soaring 'above it all," swooping down from the clouds, frightening schoolchildren and alighting her 'copter anywhere she wanted for delicious picnic lunches of grilled-cheese sandwiches.

Unfortunately, Flight Instructor Nibot could not even raise $10 each from the 400+ county committee members who live above Route 4. I know, I know, it sounds easy, just contact your OWN PARTY MEMBERS (of which there ar over 1,000), ask them for a measly $10, and collect all that money so that you can get a big chunk of Failcopter fuel ($50,000) from Sky Marshal Corzine (and maybe runa credible campaign, or at least get a website - it was 2007! LULZ). Unfortunately, Clara's Failcoptering skillz just weren't strong enough (apparently running a campaign where the "bad guy" is the Bergen Performing Arts Center ia a guaranteed 'fail.")

But you, young Calabrese. Ignore Flight Instructor Nibot! You still have your dreams! You have the skillz!

Don't let your Flight Instructor get you down. She was young, once, and she had dreams, too. Don't you let yours get dashed so easily!  Just climb back aboard the failcopter, put your hands in the dual cyclics of fail, add power . . . don't over-rotate . . .more power . . . AND YOU'RE OFF THE GROUND!
****
Having Fails "guide" or "train" or even "select" the next generation of leadership is a sure way to failcopter the future of the BCRO.  The 'Up-and'comers' have to be given some guidance, sure, but then they need to be given a chance, or they will be 'up-and-went.'  Without going intot he merits of Chris Calabrese, he at least is a young guy who is putting himself out there.  Calabrese could not possibly do worse than Nibot or some of the other Fails the BCRO has run recently.

Hardened 'veteran' BCRO Failcopter pilots seem to worry more about 'allegiances' to the BCRO Failcopter Academy than whether or not the candidate is viable.  They'd rather run their friends, and have them lose, then run someone with a snowball's chance they don't 'know.'  And by 'know' I mean "have watched them flail and flounder for a decade or so tilting at windmills."

Today's lesson: There needs to be room at the BCRO for young padawan learners.   Or Vader is going to come to 339 Main Street and give Order 66.

p.s. "Energizer" is Clara Nibot!  Shh! Don't tell anybody!

03/04/08 5:07 pm

to the Monday morning quarterbacks

Clara tried her best to get the needed signatures.  The GOP chairman did nothing to help her.  All the candidates did their best.  It's not that these weren't good candidates - They did not get enough support from their own party.

Leadership is needed to unite all factions of the party.

Let's hope that the freeholder candidates get everyone's support after the convention.

words of wisdom from GOP LADY

Most of the armchair Generals who pretend to know better never donated anything to last years county candidates.Lets hope that who ever wins on Thursday will get better support. After all its about winning isnt it ?.

All of this years candidates have something to offer the voters.

They are all a lot better than  any of the Democrat corrupt but well financed  " ham sandwiches"

03/04/08 7:37 pm

Some facts!

Neither Thom Ammirato nor Joe Caruso live in BERGEN!  So, why should anyone from Bergen care what they have to say.  Maybe they should talk to Scott Rumana about what kind of candidates they want in Passaic.

The question that Clara asked, definitely needs to be asked at any county screening committee meeting.

Bill Maer needs some lessons in humility!

03/04/08 8:10 pm

Priorities

Didn't mean to start a Clara bashing thing.  The lady works hard and she cares, both of which are admirable qualities.  I just think she was misguided in valuing length of registration over energy, resources and electability.

I also hope GOPLady heeds her own advice as to unity.  Seems she was more interested in taking a potshot at current leadership than offering any real value.  Bottom line, that pilot program was already 2 months underway before the current chair was elected.  She might also wanna ask Loretta Weinberg  how much help she got from her chair and her party organization in collecting the necessary signatures.  Again, I'm not saying it's fair to blame Clara, but it's certainly not fair to dump the blame on BCRO.  We need prople to be less concerned about preserving their stature and their influence and more concerned about building the organization and winning elections.

Last November was the best general election night Bergen Repubs have had in about 5-6 years.  Since then there has been more professionalism, more energy and more life.  Biggest mistake they can make now is degenerate into Civil War III.

Pick your candidates Thursday, rally behind them and try to beat Democrats.  'Nuff said.

03/04/08 9:51 pm

Republican Strategist Thom Ammirato?

Is that the same guy the Democratic Mayor and Council pays as their government spokesman in North Arlington?  I don't like it because we can't afford it...but the GOP trusts him?  Or is he the reason the NA Dems spend all their time attacking other Dems in South Bergen...hmmm.  Talk about infiltration.  Now I see what's happening!
