Strategic Vision: Corzine job approval at 39%

No sitting statewide Democrat enjoys what might be called popularity in public office here in New Jersey, according to a Friday Strategic Vision poll.

But Republicans continue to carry the dead weight numbers registered by President George W. Bush.

Up for re-election next year, the poll shows Gov. Jon Corzine with an upside-down job approval rating of 39/47%, and 14% undecided.

It also shows Bush running out of room before he bottoms out, with just 15% of voters approving of his job performance, 70% disapproving, and 14% undecided.

In the fall U.S. Senate showdown between Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and his Republican challenger, former U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer, Strategic Vision gives the incumbent a 48% to 32% edge, with 20% undecided.

Still, Lautenberg’s age - 84 - shows a vulnerability, with 57% of respondents saying Lautenberg’s "too old" to represent New Jersey effectively, while 39% say he’s not too old, and 4% remain undecided.

Lautenberg’s approval rating is 48/40%, with 12% undecided.

In the presidential race, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Il) beats Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), 47-38%, with 15% undecided, according to Strategic Vision, whose research is based on

interviews with 800 likely voters in New Jersey, aged 18+, and conducted July 11-13.

who??

I just can't fathom it...

who actually approves of Corzine? he managed to raise sales tax... raise property tax... and is once again going to propose to increase gas tax and tolls...

and he has done what exactly to benefit this state? :?

hahaha

i think this sums it up well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Corzine#Governor

he better appoint some people as NJ wiki advisors to make his image appear better... and they should be paid no less than $500k / year with a guaranteed pension of no less than $200k / year and a retirement bonus of $200k after working 2 weeks...

All of this does not matter...

Corzine will be re-elected, anyway... the Democratic Party is too much of machine to be overcome by the State GOP which has all but withered... Christie's best bet is to sit out the election and wait following Corzine's second term... State GOP = no cash = no party apparatus = inability to GOTV = permanent minority status... for a case study, look at Passaic County... you can't find a better textbook example of incompetence in government than that Democratic Freeloader Board and yet the (m)asses keep re-electing the meatballs...

The end of good time in NJ!

Gov. Corzine and his Democratic fellows in corruption are going down in flames. Polls are just the beginning.

what a great attitude TLG

:P

the simple fact is... corzine raised ALL taxes... sales & property... and is trying to raise misc taxes like tolls, fees, etc...

for what?? what benefit has ANYONE in nj seen because of this...

a couple of school supers walking with hundreds of thousands of dollars in payouts??

him getting these county supers paid even more money to oversee the other supers??

great job... let's spend 10 million to make sure we don't pay out 5 million in retirement bonuses...

or... let's force everyone into early retirement... pay them off... then have to hire a whole nother workforce to compensate... cause paying 1 person is less than paying 1 person AND a pension...

don't give up... vote and do something about it... this state is getting ridiculous...

Corzine will win

Corzine has cut the budget.

Republicans opposed his long term debt restructuring plan.

Republicans borrowed us into the long term debt mess.

CORZINE HAS CUT THE BUDGET?

Did I read that right?

He supposedly kept the line on the budget, by redistributing some of the debt burden onto counties and municipalities. Then he cuts part of hospital charity care and a few other health related programs. Why would he do that to keep the budget at $33B? Because he and his team actually INCREASED THE BUDGET by 40%!

You say, "What?". Yes - 40%

I will just name a few of the major ones: 1

) $3.9B added to the Abbott Districts. This is only the first part of an $18B initiative.

2) $4B for Universal Healthcare. Yes, it will be $4 billion, not the $1.7B being touted.

3) Increasing county and municipal taxes an average of 15-35% depending on the township.

4) Adding 20% to our local school taxes. The addition of two extra grade levels (3&4 year olds) to 89 school districts. Plus the infrastructure upgrades to support them.

So, your at a $33B budget with Abbott & UHC alone, that makes it now $41B. Then add in the school upgrades that will be distributed across the state and the municipal tax upgrades, that places up in the $43-44B range (WHICH IS A 32% INCREASE RIGHT THERE!). Now there were actually about two dozen various smaller taxes that went in, but I'm sticking to the majors because I can't quite keep track of them anymore at a detail level. ADD ON ALL OF THESE EXTRAS AND YOU ARE AT THE 40% LEVEL!

This does not include the burden of Paid Family Leave or any of these other debt restructuring schemes that would yield his friends hundreds of millions. Remember, when every bond is floated, the group that manages it gets 3% service fee. That doesn't include any other monies they make during the bonding process. 3% of a $40B bond is $1B to the group that is the overseerers. If the stewards of the bond screw up, the state becomes liable. It's nice to be in a no lose situation.

The bottom falls out in 09

Corzine and the NJ Dems are going to face a devastating defeat in 2009 because they can no longer demagogue Bush. President Obama or McCain means less partisan scare tactics. In fact, I bet Doug Forrester would have won or come close in 05 but Bush was an albatross and it became a protest vote against him.

I believe Corzine has lost 200,000 to 300,000 votes since 2005 with the job hes done and even spending $70 million he could not get 1 million NJers to vote for him. We know the GOP can turn out 900,000 with just their weak organization. If the GOP spends money and has a decent candidate its theirs for the taking.

Help Wanted: Democratic Nominee

It is time that Democrats get together to select a serious challenger to take on this corporation cowboy who thinks he is immune to the same standards as everyone else.

I for one will be ready, willing and able to help a qualified Democrat who brings character, competence and courage to the table.

I would be willing to bet that many other rank-and-file Dems share my desire.

If you want to help -- or if you have what it takes to run against Corzine as a principled progressive candidate -- please send an email with your contact details to njdemocrats@gmail.com

With public financing and a clear desire for change among the people of this state, a challenger to Corzine would be an excellent prospect for success.

Did you seriously just quote wikipedia? Bottom line Corzine hasnt been perfect, but he has been inarguably the first Governor since Florio to attempt to tackle any issue of substance in this state. Agree with him or not, he has shown to be a most admirable governor.

07/20/08 2:42 pm

yes i did

the wiki is invaluable... and people use it all the time... the fact that the wiki says not ONE thing corzine has done that is positive is pretty substantial...

and what issue is it that he has 'tackled'? that he wants to continue feeding more and more money into a corrupt useless government?

when any person living in this state has financial troubles... what do they do? increase spending?? go out and get 10 more credit cards??

Are you insane?

Sounds more like Jim from Pemberton is on the Corzine's payroll. He wrote the following (see above): "Corzine has cut the budget. Republicans opposed his long term debt restructuring plan. Republicans borrowed us into the long term debt mess." And I went to the Moon and back. Let's be serious here.

NJ now stands for No Jobs

NJ now stands for No Jobs thanks to Jon and the Dems over the last 7 years. Private sectors jobs are leaving or being eliminated in droves. Plus my area last I heard had a 20% commmercial office space vacancy rate.
