Tonight, state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Hunterdon) reported "about $100,000" in the bank as he faces the $1.5 million cash juggernaut of Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) in the 7th Congressional District.
"We're spending the summer raising money," an upbeat Lance told PolitickerNJ.com. "We have a serious fundraising operation ongoing."
Asked if he is optimistic, the Republican nominee said, "Very much so. I'm getting a good reception."
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) website Tuesday evening showed Lance with $80,792.90 on hand for the period ending on June 30.
Stender's team today celebrated their lopsided cash advantage.
"Linda Stender’s in a great position," said campaign spokeswoman Abby Curran. "Her success really speaks to that. Seventh District voters are tired, and these (fundraising) numbers really show which direction voters want to go in this district."
Lance, a moderate who bested a large field of Republican candidates in the primary, including Kate Whitman, daughter of the former governor, said he is spending most of his time campaigning in those counties where he is not as well known: Middlesex and Union.
Those are also the two counties where Lance failed to secure the party line in the primary, and where the Democratic Party is best organized. Moreover, Stender lives in Union.
Lance's campaign manager, Amanda Woloshen, acknowledged the costly toll taken by Lance's roughly "$450,000" battle to land the party's nomination, but stayed focused on the results of an internal poll taken by GOP pollster Adam Geller.
"Stender has an upside down image rating of 20% favorable and 29% unfavorable districtwide," Geller said. "This is a noteworthy and rare finding: it may be the first time we've ever conducted a poll in a targeted district in June and found one of the candidates beginning the campaign with an upside down image."
Referring to an ad campaign that departing U.S. Rep Mike Ferguson (R-7) used against her two years ago, Geller said, "In fact, by a 2:1 margin, voters believe the statement that 'Linda Stender is a big
spender' to be true."
Geller said Lance leads Stender, 42% to 35%.
"This is a Republican district," Woloshen concluded. "We will have a full fundraising effort."
Woloshen also rebuked the Stender campaign for not yet issuing a ststement regarding what Stender intends to do with thousands of dollars she received from U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), who received four sweetheart deals on Harlem apartments, as reported last week.
"They promised an explanation on Friday, and we're going on day five," Woloshen said.
Curran swerved away from the Rangel controversy, instead targeting an unpopular Republican president.
"I would call upon Leonard Lance to denounce the failed policies of the Bush administration," Curran said. "He should have to answer for $12 billion a month we’re spending in Iraq and soaring healthcare costs."
Curran said over 100 people attended the opening of Stender's Fanwood campaign headquarters on Saturday.

"I would call upon Leonard Lance to denounce the failed policies of the Bush administration," Curran said. "He should have to answer for $12 billion a month we’re spending in Iraq and soaring healthcare costs."
Oh please, tell me that's the Democrats strategy to defeat Lance, they are going to need a lot more then millions of dollars to defeat a guy who everyone freakin knows is a moderate with no connection to Bush what so ever except for his party affiliation. Give me a freakin break.
Keep spinning Stender
"Linda Stender’s in a great position," said campaign spokeswoman Abby Curran. "Her success really speaks to that. Seventh District voters are tired, and these (fundraising) numbers really show which direction voters want to go in this district."
Look at Linda's FEC report...close to 80% of her funding has come from out of the district--SPECIAL INTERESTS. Curran's quote is a joke and so is Linda for that matter.
The way things are going
for Linda, Fanwood might go GOP.
Lance
Lance has 80k to start with against $1.5 million for Stender and a recent $1.8 million DCCC ad buy for her. Lance, who voted against the civil union bill, is anti-choice when it comes to a woman's right to choose, has voted against stem cell funding research, and has voted against a recent greenhouse gas reduction bill, simply isn't ready for this type of campaign, financially speaking or on a strategic level. Currently, Zeitz and Shulman have more money in their accounts than Lance, for example.
Lance also hasn't proven that he has a strong grasp of national issues. Your guess is as good as mine on what his position is on withdrawing forces from Iraq, whether SCHIP should be fully funded, and a host of other issues. He's both unprepared and underfunded.
double post...
n/t
your an idiot...
Where do you get your facts at?
Lance is pro-choice, voted yes on the "global warming response act", and voted for stem cell research.
Did you happen to miss the primary where some conservatives grumbled about Lance? I mean even the freakin Sierra Club likes him.
Keep drinking the kool-aid Man-Purse Martin.
For backwardsnewjersey
I don’t mean to take you to school and embarrass you on a public forum, backwardsnj, but I’ll let the facts speak for themselves. Perhaps this information will help you to wake up, get your facts straight and be better informed on voting records, and, generally speaking, help get your head out of your posterior.
Voting Record
1). I claimed that “has voted against a recent greenhouse gas reduction bill.” Fact: Lance voted against A 4559: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Source: http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_detail.php?cs_id=16826&can_id=4443
2a). I claimed that Lance “has voted against stem cell funding research.” Fact: Lance voted against S 1471: Cigarette Tax Securitization Proceeds Fund; Stem Cell and Biomedical Research Facilities Source: http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_detail.php?cs_id=2998&can_id=4443
2b). Lance also abstained from voting on a 2005 bill that provided $350 million for funds for research in embryonic stem cell research. Source: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1542190/posts You claimed that Lance had “voted for stem cell research.” Find the bill, and post it, backwardsnj.
3a). I claimed that Lance “anti-choice when it comes to a woman's right to choose.” According to Emily’s List, Lance “has repeatedly voted to limit reproductive freedom.” From Emily’s List,” Lance has repeatedly voted to limit access to abortion and family planning services for women -- he even opposed legislation to require pharmacists to fill prescriptions for contraceptives.” Source: http://www.emilyslist.org/candidates/linda_stender/
3b) Lance himself only supports abortion rights according to a survey he personally responded to , in cases of rape, incest or when the woman’s life is in danger. Hardly pro-choice. Source: http://www.votesmart.org/npat.php?can_id=4443#409
In defense of your misinformation, Lance has claimed “I have voted for parental notification for abortion, although I am pro-choice.'' So, even though the parental notification bit is an anti-choice position, I can somewhat understand the confusion on your part here and with the stem cell question. Heck, I don't even know whether Lance knows what his shifting position is from week to week and depending on what interest group he's speaking to! 4). The Sierra Club will be endorsing Stender, not Lance. Stender already received the endorsement of The Sierra Club in the primary. Jeff Tittel of The Sierra Club said the following: “Stender has a remarkably strong record at both the local and state level of standing up for environmental causes, and she would be a wonderful voice for our interests in Congress. Linda Stender would work to create a cleaner, greener world for New Jersey families.” In fact, Stender was an original cosponsor of the Global Warming Response Act. Silly Margaret...
So you cite 1) Party line vote which obviously means there was more to the bill than just the subject headline, 2) A bonding issue where Lance is always opposing bonding w/o voter approval, 3) an abstention..which means nothing since he didn't vote against it, 4) parental choice which has nothing to do with being "anti-choice" at all while using a hardcore partisan source like emily's list, and lastly you say the wacko's at the Sierra Club will be endorsing the Spender in the General.
Then answer this question Margaret - Why the hell would the Sierra Club endorse her in an uncontested primary but not the general election? Could have it been because they were waiting to see what happened with Lance who is Mr. Environment?
They stay out of this race or endorse Lance, there's no reason at all they would endorse an uncontested candidate in a primary unless they knew that someone from the other side could keep them from endorsing in the general should he win the primary.
I'm no big fan of Lance and what he did as Senate Minority Leader, but everyone has to admit he's perfect for Congress. He's not a press whore who will be uber-partisan and only following his party like Stender the Spender is.
Lance will work hard on policy stuff while having no fear of standing up to his own party and being Mr. Gentleman. Only issue for him is Stender might buy the election and he can't raise money.
oh and check the NJLeg site...
For last year's stem cell bonding ballot question vote..Lance voted yes.

Thanks
I wanted to thank backwardsnj for his response and exchange, because it inspired me to write a new Blue Jersey diary on how the perception of Lance as a "moderate" is in contradistinction to his actual record:
http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=8447
I'm not even going to engage with Madness95, whose profanity-ridden tirade detracts from the policy position he advocates. As a gentle reminder to the usually-even keeled backwardsnj, I would inform him that this is his shared Republican voting bloc: those who think a woman's reproductive system should be property of the state, those who think that creationism is a viable alternative to evolution, and those who equate stem cell research with "human cloning." There's a proper designation for those kind of views...
Another fundraising data point
Just to offer another interesting data point on the 7th district fundraising results in addition to that of State Sen. Leonard Lance and Assemblywoman Linda Stender. Per FEC.gov 6/30/08 filing data, the independent candidate Michael Hsing has about $92K cash at hand, Lance has about $81K, and Stender has about $1.2M. For an independent candidate, Hsing did a respectful job in raising funds. But, we’ve got a couple of months to go; it is an endurance test for all of them.
However, I’d like to see a 3-way race, instead of a typical Dem. Vs. Rep, 2-way race. Okay, you may argue that Hsing was a Republican. I hope Hsing can bring new ideas and bold perspectives into the status-quo politics.
