Codey: Wesley Clark would be good Obama veep

Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) would love Barack Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex)Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex)Obama to pick Codey’s old pal, former Sen. Bill Bradley, as his running mate.

He recognizes, however, that a Northeastern, blue state vice presidential candidate on the Democrats’ ticket probably wouldn’t be in Obama's best political interest.

That leads Codey past his sentimental favorite to his second choice: retired General Wesley Clark.

"He’s got personality, he’s got a great wife, and he gives Obama age and military background.," Codey told PolitickerNJ.com.

Clark ran unsuccessfully for president in 2004, losing to Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) in the Democratic primary.

A cerebral military man and decorated Vietnam War veteran who served as supreme allied commander of Europe under President Bill Clinton during the Kosovo War, Clark remains close to the Clintons and supported Sen. Hillary Clinton in her failed presidential bid.

Clark on the ticket could boost Team Obama’s profile with regular guy and armed forces voters and blue collar former Clinton supporters, in Codey’s judgment.

"I don’t think anyone connotes in his mind a five star general with a guy who’s going to be on a laptop at Starbucks," said the senate president, who backed Obama in the Democratic Primary after the campaign blow up of his first choice, former Sen. John Edwards.

Clark for V.P.

Wesley Clark, who speaks multiple languages and is the former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, would be an ideal vice-presidential candidate for several reasons: his intelligence, his gravitas, his southern background, his experience, and his military background. I wrote to an Arkansas reporter a year or so ago, though, and he said there was no groundswell of support in that state for Clark, only for Clinton and Huckabee. For what he brings to the ticket, including being a Clinton supporter and thus providing a bridge between the two candidates, Clark should be seriously considered for Obama's VP.

Nearly Started WW3 on Serbia

Wesley Clark was sent home and scolded by a high ranking British General after nearly starting WW3. He wanted to take out a Russian Unit guarding the airport. Cody and Martin one know nothing about the disgraced career of this overrated NOVICE

Kosovo firing story completely bogus

Broy's comment is hooey. Read David Halberstam's WAR IN A TIME OF PEACE for the full story.

As the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, Clark ordered British General Mike Jackson to prevent the Russians from occupying the Pristina airport. Jackson, who's known as Wacko Jacko, for grandstanding, was insubordinate and popped off to the press saying that he wouldn't start WW3 for Clark.

There was no way that Russia was going to start WW3 over Bosnia. In fact, they have been participating in the successful peacekeeping mission that Clark's amazingly quick victory enabled. Clark won a war that stopped a genocide without the loss of single allied casualty.

Clark wasn't fired. After Clark's victory, Defense Secretary Cohen brought him home early so that Cohen's close personal friend Joe Ralston, who would have to had to retire unless he was promoted, could be SACEUR. Clark was awarded the Medal of Freedom, a knighthood, and many other honors for his brilliant performance.

Clark is the best choice for veep because of his gravitas and because he'd make a great president.

Let's Be Serious

Codey has an inauspicious record of choosing the right horse in national politics and needs to stick to NJ politics. General Clark is good man and would make a solid Secretary of Defense, but he'd be an awful VP candidate for the same reasons he was an awful candidate for President in 2004. Clark is a soft-spoken policy wonk who looked as comfortable on the stump as Jim McGreevey in church.

If it's Codey's belief that BHO should butress the ticket with someone with blue collar/military/foreign policy appeal, he'd be much better served with someone like Jim Webb or General Jones as his VP candidate. Webb's past writings aside, there has never been a VP candidate with two silver stars, two purple hearts, three tatoos, and a union card. If you're trying to reach blue collar voters and those voters concerned about foreign affairs, Clark is not nearly as appealing as other options.

Clark was not Fired

He was sent home in disgrace, passed over for promotion and according to Col Hunt was disliked by his junior officers and NCOs

06/26/08 4:40 pm

Codey is ... a dreamer.

Gen. Clark is a two time reject in the Democratic Party. Then, he moved to support Desperately loosing Hillary (DLH) with some of his military bodies. You can google the Georgetown University major policy speech by DLH to see all these fools behind her. There is no way he could be even considered for any position in Obama's administration. A couple of weeks after that event Obama had his own military brass behind him in his foreign policy speech. These are your candidates for defense jobs. Forget two time looser Clark.

What happen to Edwards?

Wasn't Codey backing that empty suit Edwards?

Let's leave picking a VP to those in the know!

Max - You're Slipping!

Max, you're slipping badly with the Codey "backed Obama in the Democratic Primary" bunk.  He only jumped on after the train left the station.

Dick's pick for the top slot, together with his "progressive" little parrot MartinOne (latest parrot comment, above) was the inimitable Silky, aka, Mr. Haircut himself

At least . . . I'm "pretty" sure!  Heh!

So, the real only question raised by Dick Codey's latest in a long line of still-born endorsements, is, will "Smilin' Jack" Wesley Clark possibly be able to raise enough money to have his campaign contributors pay for $400.00 haircuts -- like Silky did?

My how 6 months can seem like a lifetime, eh?

As of just this past December 9th  . . . Dick Codey said:

"It is all about November, and who's got the best chance of winning," said Codey, who sat down with Edwards last winter in the lead-up to giving him his support. "Edwards has the ability to win southern states, which Clinton is going to have a hard time doing. Obama is too young and unproven to win an election nationwide."

Wes Clark is NOT a smart pick

Wesley Clark won't carry any state, including his home state of Arkansas for Obama. I don't really believe that he wins a single state for Obama that Obama wouldn't win with someone else.

I like moderate Governors (and former Governors) that win Obama a swing-state.

Mark Warner (Virginia)
Bill Ritter (Colorado)
Mike Easley (North Carolina)
Ted Strickland (Ohio)

Despite the fact some of these ex-Clinton supporters have stated they won't take the spot, I think they're likely to reconsider when actually asked.

Broy's spouting nonsense from Rush Limbaugh

Clark's a four star. There are no five stars now. He's one of the most accomplished and decorated generals since WWII. Many of his subordinates campaigned for him.

You can't beat having actually won a war and having been right about Iran and Afghanistan from day one.

Isn't Colonel Hunt one of the commentators who's been accused of parrotting Pentagon talking points on TV?

BHO & Clark - Perfect Together!

What a ticket! Not one, but two guys who still cling to the notion that the war in Iraq is hopelessly lost despite not having been there in years.

"I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."
-Winston Churchill

06/26/08 7:13 pm

Broy, you are maliciously wrong!

In the Kosovo campaign, the Russians, who were supporting the genocidal Serbs, made a move to occupy part of the airport at Pristina. General Clark had clearance from both NATO and Washington to occupy the airport first to deny the Russians a foothold, since the Russians had not cooperated with NATO during the war. When British General Michael Jackson (a notorious nutcase) was insubordinate and refused Clark's order, he should have been fired. But Washington changed the orders to not interfere with the Russians. To illustrate how pathetic the Russians were, they then ran out of supplies, and General Clark assisted them with food and other supplies. General Clark was relieved of his SACEUR command a couple of months early because the Pentagon wanted to get the position to the Air Force general who was involved in extramarital affair a new command lest he be involuntarily retired. The Pentagon snookered Bill Clinton who said he never would have signed off if he had known what was going on. Wes Clark has Knighjthoods or the equivalent from 19 European nations, has streets name after him in Albania, whose Muslims were saved from genocide. Wes Clark is the leader whose troops would "charge through brick walls" for him.

A Definite Maybe?

Some people think that Wesley Clark has been a bit, shall we say, "Kerryesque" in his statements about the War in Iraq.

From Wikipedia, here (notes in original).

The day after he launched his campaign, for example, he was asked if he would have voted for the Iraq War Resolution, which granted President Bush the power to wage the Iraq War, a large issue in the 2004 campaign. Clark said, "At the time, I probably would have voted for it, but I think that's too simple a question," then "I don't know if I would have or not. I've said it both ways because when you get into this, what happens is you have to put yourself in a position — on balance, I probably would have voted for it." Finally, Clark's press secretary clarified his position as "you said you would have voted for the resolution as leverage for a UN-based solution." After this series of responses, although Clark opposed the war, The New York Times ran a story with the headline "Clark Says He Would Have Voted for War". Clark was repeatedly portrayed as unsure on this critical issue by his opponents throughout the primary season, being forced to continue to clarify his position such as at the second primary debate when he said, "I think it's really embarrassing that a group of candidates up here are working on changing the leadership in this country and can't get their own story straight... I would have never voted for war. The war was an unnecessary war, it was an elective war, and it's been a huge strategic mistake for this country."

Got that?

Haven't heard from him lately, though, now that the surge is going very well. Probably has a new revision -- or is it a reversion?

Hard to keep track.

A "WAR V.P."

A "WAR V.P.", that's what we need? You would think we would have learned our lesson by now, but maybe not. How about we leave war to the warriors and politics to the politicians?

Thinking out loud here for a minute, and I'm tired, but bear with me. I like John Edwards and here's why. Imagine for a moment Barack Obama goes to the Oil and Gas Industry, the Health Care Industry, the War Industry (that our last real "War President" warned us of...), take your pick because if I mention any more I'm sure I'll offend; and he says "Look guys and gals, I'd like to work with you on this, perhaps we can find a compromise" (my favorite, with their outsized profits, oil and gas integrates hydrogen fuel cell filling stations into our existing infrastructure). "But if you don't or wont work with me I got this guy John Edwards and he's crazy. He'll shame you on TV, make you a national pariah, have you running home to your mommy and daddy" I'd bet that the legacy industries would line up to compromise with Obama because NO ONE is going to want to deal with John Edwards. That is the kind of "WAR V.P." I'd like to have.

Best regards to all.

...Bill Richardson. I'm telling you folks, this is a no doubter.

Clark

Was not disgraced we can all put that to bed. Codey picked Clark because he is safe to say and doesnt get Codey in any controversy-its why he supported Edwards. Clark is not a good fit for BHO-CLark has illustrated time and time again that he isnt ready for Prime Time

Clark got his four year command at NATO cut to less than three

you need to meet some real soldiers and stop sucking up to the Dims. As Commander of NATO, Clark held the Joint Title of Commander of the European Army, or Supreme Commander of European Forces he had direct control over NATO.

He commanded the NATO effort in Bosnia. Lieutenant General Michael Jackson was Clark's on the scene commander in Bosnia. When Clark told him to use his pararoopers to stop the Russians, Jackson told Clark, "I won't start WW III for you."

In joint international commands all personality clashes are turned over to the sponsoring officer's country for resolution. The United States replaced Clark with Air Force General Ralston who had a pre-maritial affair that kept him from higher rank.

Clark was dismissed on a document signed by all command authorities including Bill Clinton. When asked about him later, his former boss, Hugh Shelton said, "General Hugh Shelton would say of Clark during his 2004 campaign that "the reason he came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart. I'm not going to say whether I'm a Republican or a Democrat. I'll just say Wes won't get my vote," though Shelton never elaborated further on what these issues were. It is a clue to note that Lieutenant Michael Jackson left his job in Kosovo and took over the top slot in England's MOD, SIR General Michael Jackson.
