McCain State Chair Bill Baroni, right, with Sen. Leonard Lance on Wednesday in Woodbridge.
WOODBRIDGE - The McCain campaign opened up its New Jersey/New York regional headquarters here in the heart of hail fellow blue collar country on New Brunswick Avenue.
"New Jersey is McCain country," declared New Jersey State Campaign Chairman Bill Baroni, flanked by fellow Republicans, including Sen. Thomas Kean, Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce, state Sen. Kevin O’Toole, state Sen. Leonard Lance, Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton, Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan, Morris County Sheriff Ed Rochfort, and Ed Cox, chair of the New York McCain campaign, among others.
"We are here, we’re campaigning, we’re competing, we’re building a grassroots organization, we’re opening it (campaign headquarters) in the heart of Reagan Democratic country," said Baroni, who also at least once invoked what New Jersey Republicans call the "Baroni model," or hardcore shoe leather-style campaigning.
This is the first time in 16 years that a Republican candidate for president has had a headquarters in the state, Baroni noted. Much like that president, their candidate is an across-the-aisle Republican, the GOP affirmed.
"The American people want someone who can reach across partisan
Ed Coxlines," said Cox, packed among Republicans on the second story of a building in a light industrial spillzone a few blocks away from a Pathmark where shopping carts banged across pavement.
"Woodbridge represents the kind of population we have to carry to win the state," said Cox, the son-in-law of former President Richard Nixon who started working on presidential campaigns in 1968.
Lance, who’s running against Democrat Assemblywoman Linda Stender to represent the 7th Congressional District, said, "It’s clear Sen. McCain is going to carry both New Jersey and New York," said Lance. "From Buffalo to Cape May. ...I’m proud to be running on the ticket with John McCain."
Kean was up next.
"Sen. McCain can bring so many people together," he said. "There’s an energy and enthusiasm you see here in this room and as people make phone calls around New Jersey and New York. We will be working our heart and soul to make sure John McCain wins not just Woodbridge, but all of New Jersey."
The invocation of "Reagan Democrats" inevitably prompted a press challenge about Reagan’s 1980 campaign kickoff in Philadelphia, Mississippi where he dove into the deep South to win disgruntled Dixiecrats on an anti-government message.
"I don’t think that happened in New Jersey," said O’Toole. "When you talk about Reagan Democrats, you’re talking about my father, that type of worker whom Reagan reached out to and converted. These were the people who had Kennedy portraits in their living rooms."
Sen. Kevin O'Toole (R-Essex) in Woodbridge on Wednesday.
Baroni and O’Toole said they’re going after Hillary Clinton supporters for starters, and the HQ’s placement in Woodbridge also sends a signal they mean to bring aboard Latinos and African Americans, they said.
Five full-time staffers will run the headquarters and coordinate volunteers. Baroni intends to work closely with State Campaign Coordinator Rick Mroz and state co-chairs.
In addition to regional campaign manager Bill Stepien, the co-chairs include state Sen. Jennifer Beck, Atlantic County GOP Chair Keith Davis, DeCroce, Camden County GOP Chair Rick DeMichele, Donovan. Peter Kane (former state chair, Huckabee for President), state Sen. Sean Kean (R-Monmouth), Kean, state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, Assemblywoman Allison McHose, Morris County Freeholder John Murphy, O'Tolle, and Rochford.
While Republicans rallied, Democrats bristled at the working class invocations and quickly fired off a statement from Democratic State Committee Chairman Joseph Cryan.
Cryan linked McCain not with Reagan, but someone whose name the GOP avoided at the press conference: a nearly bottomed out sitting president, whom the Democratic chairman identified three times in a release.
"We welcome John McCain to New Jersey because the more attention he gets here the more the voters will be convinced that a vote for Mr. McCain is the same as voting for a third term for George Bush," Cryan said.
"He subscribes to the same economic policies that Bush used to drive the economy into the ditch, he is willing to keep American soldiers in Iraq for 100 years, he favors Big Oil over consumers and he supports tax policies that favor the wealthy at the expense of working families," Cryan added. "When New Jersey voters listen to John McCain's message they'll think they're hearing the echo of George Bush."

How Much More Can NJ Take from the Ds?
John McCain is making it very clear that he will energetically propose and seek solutions to pocket book problems faced by the average person. And that approach will definitely appeal to New Jersey voters.
Right out of the box, he has engaged the issue of rising gasoline and fuel prices, by making a series of proposals that would help reduce American dependence on foreign sources of oil.
Obama, on the other hand, has tooted the same tired nay-sayer song, refusing to consider any new drilling anywhere, including pursuing shale oil reserves, he has rejected consideration of nuclear development.
All he offers is more yammering about need to invest in alternative sources.
Yes, we need alternative research and development, but we have to survive until those "solutions" become viable.
So his message of "change" is starting to jingle-jangle in peoples' pockets like so much "chump change."
As heavily Democrat leaning as this state has voted recently, the high levels of fiscal dishonesty (e.g., calling for the constitutional approval of new borrowing, but refusing to include a brand new $3.9 Billion dollar borrowing scheme), coupled with the rash of cases in recent years of out-and-out corruption by numerous Democrat leaders, and now including the Encap fiasco, will eventually come home to roost for them.
John is banking on a pocket-book issue campaign to attract nominally Democrat-leaning voters. It is certainly worth the effort, and the Democrats may well get themselves a real surprise this fall.
by Trochilus
Excuse me?
You're accusing the Democrats of dishonesty? Have you seen what the administration in Washington has done in the areas of fiscal dishonesty, moral dishonesty and every other mendacity they can spread?! You are unbelievable. Obama is going to clean McCain's clock this November in NJ, NY, Colorado, VA and just about everywhere else that's competitive! You can take that prediction to the bank.
McCain Country????
Please John McCain. Oh Please waste your time in New Jersey campaigning!!!!! And make sure you remind voters of you and your Republican friends in New Jersey's support for Off-Shore Oil Drilling, continuing the war in Iraq, the surrender of Afghanistan, the disregard of the need to capture Bin Laden, lack of family values (divorcees unite) and just about every stupid Bush policy there is. All that so we can enjoy election night cheering on President Obama!
Corrupt Politicians
Sorry Grover,
My bank doesn't accept pie-in-the-sky checks, nor will it honor empty-promise transfers -- electronic or otherwise!
So, no, I cannot take your empty, silly prediction to the bank.
With regard to corruption, poll after poll has firmly established that the people of this state believe that Democrats are more corrupt.
And the FACTS back them up.
Would you like a full list of the miscreants? It will take more than one post -- even if you just count those from the Democrat-laced culture of corruption in the past several years. But just for starters. . .
Remember Wayne Bryant, disgraced former Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and the Senate Budget Committee? He was, among other things, creating bogus university sinecures for himself, to pump up his pension! "Professor of No-Show & Newspaper Reading, I presume?"
How about the gigantic cesspool the Democrats created at UMDNJ? The feds had to take it over and root out the cover-up clowns who were enabling those who were robbing the place blind!
How about the ex-Mayor of Newark, Sharpe James, who was also a state senator?
How about the other greedy little bribe takers -- including a few members of the General Assembly?
Where have you been? You seriously want me to go on? In the past few years, the United States Attorney has indicted and convicted 126 corrupt politicians in New Jersey, the vast majority of whom were -- you guessed it -- DEMOCRATS!!
And, Grover, me boy, I don't have to make a prediction about that.
That is established FACT. They are convicted crooks -- criminals!
So, you can take that to the bank!
And, on top of the convictions, there are a number of pending cases of corruption against Democrats.
How about the indictment of Senator Coniglio?
And how about current investigations, such as EnCap? Can't you see where that "beauty" is headed?
Don't bother taking out you golf clubs, pal. Somebody is going down on that one!
by Trochilus
is it just me???
or does Leonard Lance appear as if he would rather be somewhere else... ?
is it just me???
He should be any where but here........and take that list of losers with him.
Indictments
Re: Commentor/Trochilus
Your insights and math are dazzling, but you omit two FACTS: the US Attorney is a Republican and he is running for Governor. He is taking down every Democrat he can possibly indict so that the D party is weakened by the time he takes on Gov. Corzine. If you think R's in this state are clean -- think again. Hunterdon and Somerset have corrupt R's to the same extent that Essex and Union have corrupt D's. Problem is that the US Attorney General Christe isn't looking for them.
knowyourider
Get your facts straight about Christie. He knocked off Republican Essex County Executive Treffinger and nailed a whole bunch of GOPers with Operation Bid Rig in Monmouth County. Remember Ray "I can smell a cop a mile away" O'Grady???
What corrupt Hunterdon and Somerset Rs are you referring to? How about some names???
There are two reasons more Ds than Rs get nailed for corruption. 1) There are more Ds in office. 2) Ds are professionals when it comes to public sector graft while the Rs are amateurs.
Don't you worry though. I'm sure President Obama will appoint a U.S. Attorney who will go after those "corrupt" Republican machines in horse country.
Hamilton Junkie
HamiltonJunkie,
It seems that you and all other wild-eyed lefties have convinced yourselves that Barack Obama is running against George Bush. It’s the most fundamental mistake in politics, but please, PLEASE keep at it!
As for your issues, try to understand what is being recommended.
John McCain proposed that states be given a bigger voice in making decisions about drilling off their shores. That’s it.
What is your beef with that, HJ?
If the people of New Jersey do not want off shore drilling, then under the McCain proposal New Jersey would be in a position to prevent that from happening. Or, is it that you just intrinsically love federal mandates?
It so happens that the people in some shore states, however, want to increase off shore drilling.
Virginia is a perfectly good example.
Recently, many of the lead Democrat politicians in New Jersey, e.g., State Senator Ray Lesniak and also Congressman Bill Pascrell have been publicly touting Senator James Webb for Vice President (and so, perhaps, had State Senator Shirley Turner, who seemed to have some trouble at first remembering who she thought she was for, except that she knew it was someone from Virginia).
But the fact is that Jim Webb has recently indicated strong support for McCain’s position on off-shore drilling. Barack Obama, on the other hand, has strongly indicated his enthusiasm for higher gasoline prices! What's your preference HJ?As for the war in Iraq, had we listened to the Obamas of the world back in 2006 and immediately retreated, al Qaeda in Iraq would likely now be in charge of that entire country, or at least a huge portion of it. They would have declared victory over the "infidels" (us) and our standing in the world would have been set back for decades.
They, on the other hand, would have been sitting atop a pool of oil with which to fund terrorism world-wide, and eventually bring it here to the good old U.S.A. Remember Osama urging them to "take it to" us?
Instead, the surge that John McCain promoted and endorsed has worked, and al Qaeda in Iraq has been sent packing. In addition, the prestige of al Qaeda world-wide, including their ability to recruit, has suffered a huge blow. But Obama wants to go back to the 09/10 mentality.
Was Barack Obama’s call for immediate withdraw, and his opposition to the surge what he now calls "judgment?" I personally think of it as short-sighted stupidity.
I’ll take our position in Iraq today to the consequence of the position of retreat advocated by Barack Obama in 2006, any day of the week.
John McCain knew better; Barack Obama knew zero. Hillary was right about him, but she and Bill have to play nice now so she can pay off her personal debt.
Say, has Barack Obama ever visited Afghanistan? Answer: NO. Has he been in Iraq in the past year and a half? Answer: NO.
But you want him to be the Commander-in-Chief? Your opinion is obviously as utterly uninformed as is his.
by Trochilus
Head Fake
Did it escape anyone that McCain has not purchased any significant ads in the New York Radio/TV market...He's not competeing here, he is only trying to distrack Obama. Furthermore, McCain is no bipartisan guy-certainly not anymore. Bill Baroni's comment that NJ is McCain country is as true and believable as saying "The sky is green"
Commentor
McCain is as close to W as one can be...anytime you forget that remember what endeared him to most reasonable americans in 2000...and then picture him on stage hugging Jerry Falwell. McCain bailed on his bonafides the second he helped navigate the SS Bush
Reasonable Americans?
SJBlue,
Wait a second . . . you guys are talking about "reasonable Americans"?
John McCain continues to talk about reasonable solutions to real problems.
All Barry seems to want to do is say, "Yes we can," and then fill in the blanks with specifics about what we absolutely cannot do -- like take several actions now to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Barry says no more drilling (even Bill Richardson disagrees on that one), no more nuclear, no more shale oil recovery. "No, we cant!"
Dr. No.
I will give him credit on one thing, though. Barry did turn turtle and throw in the towel on the FISA bill.
And, it has angered his base of nutroots.
SJ, are you one of those who now say, "You can feel a real shift in the zeitgeist online," like Jane Hampshire did?
Yep. I think I can feel something . . . ooooohhhh!
by Trochilus
Reasonable Americans
1) Want to repeal Bush's tax breaks for the rich 2) Find the likes of Pat Robertson to be hatemongers 3) Find Foxnew's perverted attacks against Barack Obama to be rediculous 4) Do not want to continue another 4 years of failed war policy in both Iraq and Afghanistan the list of how out of step McCain now is is staggering...I only wish he were the candidate of 2000. He had my respect then, this election might have featured real candidates then. As it stands now McCain is a shadow of what he used to be and Obama is the only real choice for people who recognize that the United States has major problems that cannot simply be fixed by car magnets and chants of USA USA USA. This country is a fantastic place, but we need to keep that status. We need to rebuild our image amongst the community of nations and McCain is in no position to do that.
You can have all the offices you want...
but McCain is still gonna lose NJ and NY. The numbers just aren't there for him. All I know is, I don't want some guy who admits "the economy is not my strong suit" running the show when we are on the brink of major economic disaster. Plus, he can't even operate a computer! The last thing we need is a grumpy 74 year old in the White House because he can't get his "electronic typewriter" to work. He should take his horseless coach back to AZ and let a new generation take over.
Sorry, SJ, We're NOT Embracing Defeat
Ah, yes, SJ . . . the tick-tock canards trotted right out of Leftie Land!
Lets get the rich! Tax ’em! you say. Even Governor Corzine recognized that continuing down that path would completely destroy this state's economy, as if it needed any additional "help" after he, McGreevey and Codey stripped it clean, and mortgaged the State’s future.
You live in a small town? Well, congratulations. You and your fellow residents now get to fully subsidize the larger cities, and you get zip!
You also have the highest property taxes imaginable because only the Democrat-controlled areas get substantial state money for schools. Please describe how this is in any way financially justifiable.
Pat Robertson -- hatemonger? Oh, please, SJ! The American people ALL know that Reverend Wright is a real hater . . . Barak’s 20-plus year spiritual advisor and buddy, who got thrown under the bus when clips of his vicious anti-American rants hit the street. Father Michael Pfleger is a real hater . . . just ask Hillary‘s supporters! William Ayres is a real hater, too. His kind of “bomb-throwing” is not done with words.
Barack Obama’s long list of hate-sayer friends, are one-by-one getting tossed under the bus.
Barry should write a new book. He could call it, "My New Ex-Friends!"
Heck, if the pace keeps up, it could turn into a lengthy serial.
What specifically are the Fox News "perverted attacks against Barack Obama" that you are talking about? Name them. Provide links.
Just because the folks at Fox don’t get a tingle down their leg when they hear Barry talk, is not evidence of perverted attacks. As for Chris Matthews and his leg tingle, now THAT is perverted, pure and simple.
Regarding the war on terror, I’ll only repeat what I said before. Had we listened to the cut-and-run Obamas of the world back in 2006 and immediately retreated, al Qaeda in Iraq would now be running the country, or at least a huge portion of it.
They would have declared victory over the "infidels" (us) and our standing in the world would have been set back for decades. Plus, al-Qaeda would have been swimming in oil with which to fund a real huge dose of terrorism world-wide. They would have brought it here to the United States as soon as they could. Osama publicly urged AQI to bring their terror to the United States, remember?
And now, we'd have to go out and carefully gather evidence against any of the terrorists we caught, in order to take them to court because they get their constitutional rights in spite of waging war against this nation. Barry thinks that's great! "ALL RISE!!" I can hear it now!
And, instead of being confined to some hidden cave, Osama no doubt would have been spirited triumphantly into the new al Qaeda-based Iraq.
But instead of listening to cranks like Barry, and Murtha, and Edwards, et al, the Administration listened to John McCain’s call for a counterinsurgency plan. The "surge" worked and the impact on al-Qaeda world-wide has been devastating.
But now you still want us to embrace the defeatism of Barack Obama, tha man who had bad judgment in 2006, and to this day refuses to visit the troops he says he wants to command?
Forget it!
by Trochilus
You
Have a better spin machine than the GOP
Still Waiting . . .
I see.
It's all just spin? So, pretending (as you noted above) that you wish John McCain was the candidate he was in 2000 is not spin? That was before 9/11, my friend. Many of us -- not all of us -- but many of us changed for the better as a result of those horrible events, including Senator McCain.
Tell me, how should I characterize your refusal to respond to my challenge for you to specifically name the "Foxnew's [sic] perverted attacks against Barack Obama" that you referred to earlier? Is it "Un-Spin?" Concession?
Maybe I can help: Did you mean by "perverted attacks" the comment made by Juan Williams (a Democrat who is regularly featured on Fox News Channel) when he said "I think that Obama’s a pretty big flip-flopper at this moment...." in response to an interview question from Hugh Hewitt?
One man's "perverted" is another's "spot on" I guess. (Public financing, gun ruling, debates, visiting Iraq . . .)
And, I'm still waiting for your refutation of my assertions (above) about where we would be today if we had listened to the cut-and-run Democrats back in 2006?
by Trochilus
FOr the better
If you think life is better in the US after 9/11 you are more far gone than I thought...if you think Juan Williams and Alan whats his name are Democrats you are sadly mistaken. Fox News is a conservative mouth piece that pulls out "dems" as paper tigers. Juan Williams is only there to provide a jump for Brit Hume
...Cut and Run
If you dont obviously see that that is spin...well anyway we would not be bogged down in an endless civil war in Iraq. Hell if we listened to Corzine we wouldnt have been there in the first place. Thank GWB for your weak dollars and the deficit that my children will never even be able to dream of paying off...
