Tom Roughneen
In his dogged fight to stay relevant and competitive against the reality of state Sen. Leonard Lance’s big organizational advantages heading into their 7th Congressional District primary, Thomas Roughneen tonight talked strategy with his allies in a conference call.
The former Essex County prosecutor and Iraq War veteran faces a Thursday night debate with the other competitors in this Republican Primary fight, including businesswoman Kate Whitman, former Summit Council Vice-President Kelly Hatfield, Scotch Plains Mayor Martin Marks, Seton Hall business professor A.D. Amar, Murray Sabrin-running mate Darren Young, and Lance.
The debate will be the last of the cycle with two weeks to go before Election Day.
"You need to make a statement on the GI bill, Tom," says one of the candidate’s surrogates. "Now’s the time to ask other candidates where they stand on this bipartisan GI bill. Warner, Webb and Hagel all support it. You need to come out and ask Whitman, Lance and Marks where they stand on that bill."
"I agree," says another voice in another corner of the central Jersey district.
But Roughneen bucks them both.
"That’s a political bill linked to unemployment insurance," he says. "It’s a political stunt meant to embarrass the president. The president doesn’t care, he’s going to veto it anyway. Certainly we need improvements but an appropriations bill like this is not the appropriate place."
The larger strategic questions center on whether or not the candidate should try to bludgeon Lance, or let Whitman continue to fulfill that role while he focuses his attention elsewhere or goes for gravitas.
Earlier in the day, Whitman - daughter of former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman - dropped a two-sided attack mail piece on the front-runner, denouncing Lance as a weak leader who voted to stop teaching students about Veteran’s Day and failed to reform property taxes during his tenure in the state Senate.
Whitman’s latest is a follow-up barrage to Fox television advertising she unleashed on Lance starting last month, prompting Somerset County legislators to stand with the senator in a display of public disgust over Whitman’s tactics.
Now Roughneen and his team try to figure out what he will do. They received 2,500 signs on Friday, and already have 500 in place as they circle back continually to make sure they are secure.
Up until now, Roughneen, a Watchung resident, has playfully held weekly barbecues in Flemington, a poke in the territorial ribs of the Lance campaign.
One thing Roughneen shares up front on the conference call is his desire to have volunteers in key positions on Memorial Day, and he starts assigning those positions over the phone as they continue to discuss debate tactics.

The voters of the 7th district should be happy they don't have a candidate like Jack Kelly in the race. Kelly is a triple dipper who took patronage jobs he wasn't qualified for and then had taxpayers pay for his freeholder health care coverage while at the same time having taxpayers pay him 71 grand for another set of health benefts. The Asbury Park Press even called Kelly the ultimate "trough swiller." Mark this date down, Jack Kelly's run for Congress will be the begining of the end for George Gilmore and the GOP in Ocean. Gilmore has sucked taxpyers dry to line his own pockets. Gilmore, Block and the Freeholders have lined their own pockets at taxpayer expense for too long. A change is coming. Unfortunately, Gilmore has already bought off the US Attorney. Why do you think the Gilmore Toms River School Board land deal was pulled from his office and given to the Philadelphia FBI? Maybe they will be impartial in their investigation and finally lock this guy up. If not for that, then maybe for giving Jack Kelly his patronage job at the AC International Airport. A job that required college degrees when all Jackie had was a high school diploma.

That has absolutely nothing to do with Tom Roughneen and his campaign in the 7th district. If i were a resident of the 7th Tom would get my vote hands down. Lance cant fight and we definately dont need another Whitman in office. Tom has the experience, knowhow and strength to lead the party to victory in November. I strongly urge the people of the 7th to vote for him on June 3rd.
kate whitman a
kate whitman a businesswoman, funniest thing yet
Is Tom a Republican?
Didn't he just switch parties in Jan so he could vote in the presidential primary and what's the deal with him being buddy buddy with Cryan and Giblin?
Clarkvip is really an idiot
Clarkvip, didn't Marty Marks just decide he is pro-life right before his congressional run? isn't his entire pro-life stance complete BS? He's making all this conservative stuff up and laughing at all of you behind closed doors for falling for it...
Stop being so gullible, your making a fool of yourself
Ah ok...
