Giblin stays out of it for now

Labor leader Assemblyman Thomas Giblin (D-Essex) said no comment today in response to a question about who he plans to back in the U.S. Senate primary between fellow Democrats Sen. Frank Lautenberg and Rep. Rob Andrews.

It was Giblin in 1997 who as chairman of the Essex County Democratic Party decided to support Woodbridge Mayor James McGreevey over Andrews after first lining up to support the Camden congressman for governor.

Now Andrews is heading into a primary battle with U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg and at this point Giblin is staying out of the party's public fray.

But he has only good things to say about the underdog senate canddiate.

"He is a bright and articulate congressman whom I have a great deal of respect for," Giblin said of Andrews. "I have high regard for him personally and he has made a good contribution to our state."

The developing news today that Andrews would have no northern New Jersey organizational lines on county primary ballots doesn't mean Andrews won't be competitve, in Giblin's view.

"Even without that, Andrews is a formidable candidate," said the former county chair. "Even though he's likely to be up against a candidate in Lautenberg with access to considerable financial resources, Andrews and the South Jersey Democrats have political muscle."

Giblin said the election over the years of South Jersey senators Fred Madden, John Adler, Steve Sweeney, Jeff Van Drew and Jim Whelan proves the gathering strength of Andrews and his allies, including Democratic Party boss George Norcross.

Knowing what I know now.....neither was a good candidate...and neither was or would have been a good Gov.
