Andrews ad broaches the age issue

Political observers knew it was coming, but maybe not so blatantly. Democratic Senate primary challenger Rep. Rob Andrews has hit incumbent Frank Lautenberg, 84, directly on his age.

In the Democratic Senate race so far, Andrews has couched the sticky issue of Lautenberg’s age in other language, using terminology like “energy” and lamenting what he called Lautenberg’s “stale, tired, old politics.”

But with two weeks to go before primary day, a new television ad from the Andrews camp skips the euphemisms altogether.

The 30-second spot begins by mentioning Lautenberg’s 1982 campaign against Millicent Fenwick, who was 72 at the time. Lautenberg was 58, and made Fenwick’s senior citizen status an issue. The ad called the race “one of the low points in New Jersey political history” and insinuates that Lautenberg holds a double standard with men and women with regard to their age.

“Using not so veiled language, Lautenberg actually says it’s ok for a man to make fun of a woman’s age,” said the announcer’s voice on the ad. “Now Lautenberg will be 91 at the end of his term. Ninety-one. Newspapers have said it’s time for a change. It’s hard when your own words come back to haunt you, isn’t it, Mr. Lautenberg?”

If he wins reelection, Lautenberg, whose birthday is January 23rd, will actually be three weeks shy of his 91st birthday by the time his next term is up.

Most of the ad showed a picture of the 58-year-old Lautenberg next to a photograph of Fenwick, but at the end replaced it with a more recent photograph of the Senator.

The age issue could be a vulnerability for Lautenbreg, with recent polls from Rutgers University and Quinnipiac University showing that a majority of voters think he’s too old to run again. A Monmouth University poll, however, found that voters did not think Lautenberg was too old, and a recent Bergen Record poll said the same.

The Record poll put Lautenberg’s support at 49% to Andrews’s 19%, while Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello, who’s running a long-shot campaign for the nomination, garnered 7% support.

So far, Andrews and Lautenberg have each put out two advertisements: one positive, and one negative. Lautenberg’s negative ad hit on the consistent theme of his campaign: tying Andrews to his help writing the Iraq War Resolution, and noting his support for the Bush Administration’s policies on the conflict until 2005.

Just yesterday, Lautenberg’s campaign put out a press release highlighting Andrews’s statements in the run up to the war and very recent statements in a Gannett News Service article where he said “"I think I made the right decision.” The press release also noted that Andrews told the Star-Ledger last month that age wouldn’t be a focus of his campaign.

Another Lautenberg press release went on to tie Andrews to Bush on economic policies, noting his support for the repeal of the Estate Tax in 2001.

Lautenberg spokeswoman Julie Roginsky took offense what she said was implied sexism in the ad.

"Rob Andrews has shown contempt for the truth and contempt for New Jersey's women. Andrews’s ad is false and desperate, and it is offensive that Andrews' expects that women will buy into his outlandish, old politics attack using age and gender to divide,” she said. “Rob Andrews' record on voting with Gingrich to cut schools lunches and working with Bush to mislead us into war is indefensible- so all he can do is get in the gutter. Andrews can't talk about issues so he'll lie about Frank Lautenberg.”

Although the Andrews camp did not provide any quotes of Lautenberg making sexist remarks in the 1982 campaign, they referred to a blog by Star-Ledger columnist Kathleen O’Brien. O’Brien said that Lautenberg was “profoundly sexist” because he considered 72 too old for a woman to be elected to the Senate in his first race, but at 84 considers himself fit for office.”

“This script was actually drafted by Frank Lautenberg in 1982. You could say he was our ghost writer,” said Andrews campaign Chairman Michael Murphy. “Frank Lautenberg’s attacks on Mrs. Fenwick’s age, character and gender were mean-spirited, and now 26 years later he’s being reminded of how he conducted his first US Senate campaign,”

Andrews is the hypocrite

Andrews said in a number of places that he would not play the age card, but when the going gets rough with a couple weeks to go out it comes.

Andrews said he would back Lautenberg, then ran against him.

Camille Andrews put her name on the ballot but isn't sure if she wants the job.

Andrews files for open ballot positions only in counties where he didn't have a good ballot position.

Six More Wasted Years?

I cannot for the life of me understand why any serious voter cares whether Andrews changed his mind about running this race. The issue is whether this state will waste another six years with a do-nothing representative in the Senate. One would think that a four-term Senator would be ticking off his laundry list of accomplishments in this campaign. The problem is, there are no achievements to list.

During Lautenberg's tenure, he has been about as useful and effective as a broken condom. There is no justification for this man's re-election.

Notice that Senator Lautenberg can only list the things he's against (tax reductions, a war he initially supported, etc.) and nothing he's for, because he has no solutions for any problem that confronts the citizens of this state. Not a single orignial thought has passed between Frank Lautenberg's ears in the quarter-century he he has squandered on our State's behalf in Washington. He needs to go.

Lautenberg is the hypocrite

Lautenberg's ads aren't the most honest either, with his jab at Andrews for "supporting the war" and his championed remark "Frank is working to get us out".

What about Lautenberg's quote, "I'm on the President's train on this one" on Fox News in reference to supporting the war in the first place?

Let's face it, the next six years in the U.S. will be absolutely crucial, regardless of a Democrat or Republican President, new direction is being taken. New leadership is imminent.

Regardless of the Democratic nominee for President, both candidates are going into November with an energy that will carry them throughout their term in office. A Senator like Rob Andrews is needed to echo that same energy in the Senate.

Quite Frankly, Lautenberg is just too old to put the energy needed to put our country back on track.

Hit on the head

Jla2008 hit it on the head!

In a race where Lautenberg, a four term Senator, could simply list his accomplishments and drive Andrews; it's sad that he can't. That's because he has accomplished nothing, and will not accomplish anything.

Most people know that a year or two in his term he will be handing his seat over to Steve Rothman or Pallone.

So why is NJ voting for a Place holder?

Andrews

I cant believe this, this attacks not only a great US Senator, a member of his own party, and a vigerous senior citizen, it calls a member of the one demographic that comes out to vote in droves a senial, useless member of society. I cant imagine that a politician would make a direct case on age. Senior Citizens vote Rob! Rob is a disaster, this is the worst run for Governor I have ever seen-Yes I said Governor

AGE IS AN ISSUE!

Is Lautenberg kidding me?

The guy is TOO OLD to serve! Look at Edward Kennedy. He is 76. Do you think he should continue to serve given his current medical condition?

How about Tim Johnson in South Dakota? Were the people of that state served at all during his illness? How many hundreds of votes did he miss?

Did anyone see the 90-year old Robert Byrd on the floor of the senate? You think it's time he retired? How about Arlen Spector who is now fighting cancer yet again! Is it fair to voters for these people to be so political that they can't stand aside for someone else?

Age is an issue. He's way too old to serve. Let's talk about the war. He's Joe Lieberman's best friend who is now going to speak for McCain at the Republican convention!

Lautenberg needs to act his age and step aside for the betterment of the voters as well as New Jersey.

Vote Column "A" - All the way!

05/21/08 7:13 pm

you are making a health issue

All of what you said is health realted, not age related. By your standards we should remove all congressional reps that miss votes-well Andrews misses 70% of them and calls them "Not critical" How many votes has FL missed over the past few years because of health age or campaign?

DemocratDiaz, Here's Your Answer

You say....

Most people know that a year or two in his term he will be handing his seat over to Steve Rothman or Pallone.

Then you ask...

So why is NJ voting for a Place holder?

OK, let's assume that you're right (just for the sake of argument) that Lautenberg's health will fail in the next few years; and that Pallone or Rothman or Holt(!) would be appointed to replace him.

That out come would be a thousand times better than putting Andrews in the Senate.

Rob Andrews is a smart, ammbitious, competent glib young man; but he's not trustworthy.

Anyone capable of lying to the whole NJ Democratic delegation and then waiting til the very last second to file so that there coulb be no competition from his other rivals is, by definition, unworthy of holding any position/officein which the public is supposed top have trust in the office holder/official.

I don't think Andrews is qualified to be on a town council after this de facto self serving fraudulent scam.

Yes, you could stretch and spin and try to claim that this was just a matter of "changing his mind"; but that cover up fails on its face when you consider that he intentionally froze out the opposition by his strategic/last second filing.

Sorry Diaz, your guy has blown it. Chutzpah is ok, arrogant hubris crosses the line.

And if some tragedy occurred and Andrews were to become the nominee; I would still vote for him...but I bet that the Republicans would be questioning his credibility and his character on the points mentioned above....and they wouldn't be nearly as polite or mild mannered about it as I have been.

Diaz

Speaking of placeholders...why would anyone vote for Camile Andrews for Congress? Andrews is not at all trustworthy, Nick you called it.

05/23/08 12:27 am

age of Frank or McCain for that matter

This age discrimination is not right.
A young person could die at any time also. What happened to respect for experience and wisdom?

05/23/08 11:23 am

wow

Lautenberg has continuously did nothing in his time as a senator. Andrews is going to bring new and exciting ideas and make changes for the better. Why can't Frank agree to a debate? Because he can no longer make any decisions for himself. All the dumb rednecks who vote for Frank will end up regretting their decision just like they did when they voted that jackass into office that we have now!
