Ideologically P. Kelly Hatfield isn't much different from her two most high profile opponents in the 7th Congressional District's Republican primary.
Like state Sen. Leonard Lance and former first-daughter Kate Whitman, Kelly considers herself conservative, but with moderate stances on social issues like abortion (all three are pro-choice, with exceptions).
It can be hard to stick out in a field of seven candidates when she doesn't have a 17-year record as a highly visible member of the state legislature, like Lance, or a political lineage going back 100 years, like Whitman. Nor has Hatfield staked a place out well to the right of her opponents, as Scotch Plains Mayor Marty Marks. But Hatfield does have the line in Union County, which accounts for a major portion of the district. And what differentiates her from her ideologically compatible opponents, she said, is three terms on the "front lines" as a Summit Councilwoman and a PhD in microbiology.
"I believe in government close to the people, and because of my years in local government, I understand the impact that Trenton and Washington's decisions have on the people," said Hatfield.
Hatfield said that she's focused on improving the economy through the growth of small businesses, which she fostered by helping to revitalize the downtown of this small, relatively wealthy city.
"I'm the only one talking about small businesses and stimulating the economy," she said, emphasizing the need for tax cuts and incentives and lamenting the state's net loss of 9,700 jobs for the first quarter of this year.
Also unlike Lance and Whitman, Hatfield has fought and won competitive campaigns against Democrats for her council seat - most recently against James Baxley in 2003. Lance has run two competitive races in the past, but both in Republican primaries - for his first term in the Assembly and an unsuccessful congressional bid in 1996.
That puts Hatfield in a better position, she argues, to take on well-funded Democrat Linda Stender in November.
"I think I'm best poised to beat Linda Stender. I think ultimately that's what people should be thinking about," she said.
Hatfield also said that her background as a microbiologist puts her in a unique position to understand the intricacies of the health care system. It also gives her the defense and foreign policy advantage of understanding the types of agents used in bio-chemical warfare.
While Whitman and Lance have been immersed in spats over records in Trenton and negative advertisements, Hatfield said that she's kept her campaign positive through mailers and an aggressive door-to-door campaign schedule.
But she did make a comment that may be perceived as a swipe at Stender, Lance and Whitman's mother.
"I distinguish myself when I talk to the voters as a person who's not tied to the failed policies in Trenton," she said.
Hatfield's war chest is dwarfed by her other major opponents. Her next campaign report will show her with about $77,000 cash-on-hand, $55,000 of which comes from her own pocket. As of April 15th, Lance had $255,654 on hand ($100,000 of it his own), while Whitman had $307,260 (some of which is from maxed out $4,600 donations and needs to be set aside for the general election). Marks had $124,340, $75,000 of which was from a personal loan. She's ahead only of Tom Roughneen, who had about $14,452 on hand. Candidates A. D. Amar and Darren Young have not yet filed reports.
Marks may be in a better position than Hatfield to become a prime contender in this race. Having marketed himself as a "true conservative," he has an automatic appeal to a large part of the Republican electorate, according to Monmouth University pollster Patrick Murray.
Hatfield, meanwhile, has to compete for the same voters that Lance and Whitman are reaching out to. That will be tough against Lance's organizational support, with his two major county lines, and Whitman's cash (Whitman has the line in Middlesex, which comprises a small portion of the district).
"If you are a conservative voter you have a candidate that you can go to. If you're a moderate voter you have many candidates you can choose from, and in that case organizational support and name recognition plays a bigger role in who you're going to go for," said Murray. "That's going make it tougher for (Hatfield) to be a real contender in this race.

Kelly Hatfield is a very nice woman, and maybe she would have mad a good member of congress. However, her candidacy was doomed from the very start as your article accurately portrays because she is the same ideologically as Whitman and Lance, both of whom have better name recognition and more money. The Union County line victory was nice, but that was the end of the road for Kelly. It will never carry as far as she had hoped. Her presence actually helps Marks as she will take a few more moderate votes away from Lance and especially Whitman. Hatfield finishes a distant fourth in this one.
Union County line is a joke
Just ask Joel Weingarten.
Kelly
may very well surprise on election day.
I have a hard time imagining where Kate gets all these votes from to put her so far ahead.
And Marty, yeah pro-life stuff is a big catch but with no organizations?
Clark is right
The Union County GOP has no strength behind it's line. Hatfield's campaign began and ended at the Union County Convention. Her two biggest endorsers (Bramnick and Munoz) and everyone else who endorsed really misplayed their hands ... they should have known they were getting on a bus that was heading for a brick wall. If the Union County GOP wanted to sit at the adult table they should have endorsed Lance, Whitman or Marks... at least those three have bases outside of Summit.
Edits/Corrections Regarding Abortion
Here are the corrections for the misstatements in the article.
In the second graph, it says about Lance, Whtiman, and Kelly; that "..all three are pro-life.."
This is incorrect. All three are pro-choice on abortion. And here are the citations to prove it.
1)
Tom Moran of the Newark Star-Ledger columnist says:
"Lance is pro-choice"
http://blog.nj.com/njv_tom_moran/2007/12/a_straight_arrow_in_a_field_of.html
2)
Kate Whitman's campaign website says:
"I support a women’s right to choose"
http://www.kateforcongress.com/issues.php
3)
Max Pizarro says:
"[Hatfield] answered a question about her views on abortion by affirming her pro choice stance when it comes to whether or not abortion should remain legal."

As best as I can tell, the brakedown of Pro-Life/Pro-Choice in the race is as follows:
Hatfield - Pro-Choice
Lance - Pro-Choice
Whitman - Pro-Choice
Young - Pro-Choice
Roughneen - Pro-Life
Marks - Pro-Life
Amar - Unknown (but may be Pro-Life)
I agree with vip
that the line is not a red hot factor.
Hatfield got the support because she was well known by the Committee people in Union, even those outside of the 7th. I realize that the term "apparatchik' may have a dual concept. Yet, Dr Kelly is well known and respected in the active County circles.
I might even concede that Lance and recordless Whitman have general name recognition for November. Yet, Hatfield is closer to the troops that vote and get out the vote.
Mayor Marks has a good patter but his shots to the foot meant to attract GOP voters won't work in Novemeber.
The idea is to win and not play martyr to an ideological purity.
Agree with
Sloburn: Bramnick and Munoz (smartest legislator??) overplayed their hands and should have sat this one out.
VIP: Union County line is a joke
T.W.O.: abortion positions are correct, however Marks got the NJRTL endorsement and that will translate into motivated voters.
watchdog: the only surprise Kelly will get is her distant fourth place finish.
virgin: You are right; fourth place at best.
Keep thinking that
we'll wait and see...
I believe everyone predicted she would lose the convention too.
Hardly a fiscal conservative
The fact that the Summit Common Council leads all Union County towns in raising taxes over recent years, and the fact that Hatfield had a major role in that during her time on the Council, argues strongly against her claim to being a fiscal conservative. I'm from Summit and I support Lance.
Young on abortion
According to his website darren2008.com he does not support federal funding for pro or con abortion matters, but otherwise has no position on this issue.
And another thing
watch Kelly's videeo on goleader.com - her answer to why gas prices are high was a four-minute ramble that ended in "I guess you got me on that one Paul"
Hatfield
Oh, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Your being a microbiolist gives you en edge in understanding the intricacies of the health care system because ??? I've been in the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years and could not make that claim. Chemical and biological weapon knowledge ... my brain hurts just trying to follow your leaps of logic. My head spins 360 degrees every time something comes out of your mouth. I read your mother's day 'message' and I couldn't tell if you were a Democrat or a Socialist until you started with the fear mongering - you believe we should give up our personal liberties and you want the federal government to have control our children's education ... oh, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. We already have this form of Republican idiotology in Washington and look at the mess we're in. We need Constitutional Republicans Murray Sabrin and Darren Young in the Senate and Congress, respectively, to set us on the right path, not more of the same.
Hatfield may surprise us
I like Marks. But, he has the NJRTL endorsement, which is pretty much the kiss of death in NJ. Real conservatives have no respect for the NJRTL becaue of their habit of abandoning good candidates.
Tom Rougheen has a good message but no exerience or regognition and not much money.
Whitman and Lance have been beating each other up pretty well. I can almost fill a recycyling bin with all the negative pieces they have mailed me. Lance hasn't the fire needed for the general election. Whitman will suffer because the Dems have done such a hatchet job on her mother. The name helps her in the primary but will kill her in the general. Despite the money, neither has a good chance of beating Stender.
What's important to remember is who has the best shot at defeating a well funded ultra-liberal Linda Stender in November. I think that's Kelly Hatfield.
Correction to Summit tax record
njrising is incorrect about Summit's "leading all towns in rasing taxes". I recall Kelly fighting to hold the line on tax increases (only 25% of which in under the control of Council). If you live in Summit, read your tax bill. Over 51% goes to the schools and the biggest culprit is Union County who takes a bigger piece than Summit while delivering far fewer services. You might also want to read he report Kelly wrote about the effectiveness of County government.
In most UC towns, the local town council has little control over property taxes. The schools are a sacred cow, the state mandates too many costly programs and the County bills us for whatever they like. Yet, if we cut the county budget in half, no one would notice.
Lance is a nice guy. But, there's a good reason he was forced to retire as Senate Minority leader. Tom Kean will be much more effective. So, why would we want to run Lance in November?
Hatfield sure surprised me
How did she get the UC line? those last two press releases were straight out of the Democratic playbook.
