LoBiondo, Saxton and Ferguson endorse Zimmer for Senate

Less than a week after entering the Republican U.S. Senate race, former Rep. Dick Zimmer has won the endorsement of half of the state’s GOP congressional delegation.

Representatives Frank LoBiondo, Jim Saxton and Mike Ferguson all announced their support for Zimmer today, citing his fiscal conservatism.

"Having served with Dick Zimmer in Congress for two years, I know he will bring his pork-busting, fiscally conservative record into the U.S. Senate and serve the people of New Jersey with honor, which is why I am endorsing his run for U.S. Senate," said LoBiondo.

Saxton also served with Zimmer in the House, from 1991 until Zimmer left office in 1997.  He echoed LoBiondo’s sentiments, touting Zimmer’s fight “for an end to out-of-control pork-barrel spending, lower taxes and spending cuts on behalf of New Jersey citizens."

Ferguson, who entered the House after Zimmer left and is retiring after this term, said that Zimmer is the candidate with the best shot of beating either incumbent Frank Lautenberg or Rep. Rob Andrews, who are seeking both the Democratic nomination.

“Dick Zimmer will be that fiscally conservative Senator who can best defeat the Democrats in November,” he said.

Zimmer will face state Sen. Joe Pennacchio and Ramapo College professor Murray Sabrin in the June primary.

Dick Zimmer is a L-O-S-E-R !!

I just read the release from Dr. Murray Sabrin's campaign http://www.politickernj.com/georgeajjan/18461/dick-zimmer-cost-nj-gop-19...
showing that Dick Zimmer really cost the Republican Party one House Seat in 1996 when he ran for U.S. Senate and across the board, the GOP did worse and the Democrats did better.

Who was it that said insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results?

Here are the actual results from 1996 (YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF what a disaster Dick Zimmer was as a statewide candidate):

Loss of Republican House Seat

8th Congressional District: Republican Congressman Bill Martini lost to Democrat Bill Pascrell 51.20% to 47.68%

Incumbent Republicans running for Congressional Re-election

Frank LoBiondo received 64.6% in 1994 and 60.31% in 1996 (7.11% decrease)
Jim Saxton received 66.4% in 1994 and 64.21% in 1996 (3.41% decrease)
Chris Smith received 67.9% in 1994 and 63.62% in 1996 (6.73% decrease)
Marge Roukema received 74.2% in 1994 and 71.29% in 1996 (4.08% decrease)
Bob Franks received 59.6% in 1994 and 55.39% in 1996 (7.60% decrease)
Rodney Frelinghuysen received 71.2% in 1994 and 66.27% in 1996 (7.44% decrease)

Incumbent Democrats running for Congressional Re-election

Rob Andrews recived 72.3% in 1994 and 76.12% in 1996 (5.02% increase)
Frank Pallone received 60.4% in 1994 and 61.25% in 1996 (1.39% increase)
Donald Payne received 75.9% in 1994 and 84.16% in 1996 (9.81% increase)
Bob Menendez received 70.9% in 1994 and 78.83% in 1996 (10.06% increase)

Talk About Spin

Murray Sabrin is forgetting that Bob Dole was at the top of the GOP ticket that year, and Bob Dole lost by a bigger margin to Clinton in NJ than Dick Zimmer did to Torriceli.

04/15/08 10:49 am

Wow, who knew that?

“Dick Zimmer will be that fiscally conservative Senator who can best defeat the Democrats in November.” Is he going to be more fiscally conservative than Dr. Sabrin? I doubt it. Is he going to defeat the Democrats in November better than Dr. Sabrin? I doubt it.

What we need is a change. Old, tired, recycled candidates or lobbyists will not do.

Let's get on with fresh ideas. Shall we?

It's the economy stupid, and finances, stupid.

Mr. Eric: Are you really a Republican?

How come you have every excuse in the book to justify the actions of the corrupt GOP leaders and now to justify the results of a failure of a candidate like Dick Zimmer?

Don't you believe in personal responsibility? One of the main reasons these corrupt leaders "searched" for Anne, and then, Rudy, and then, Andy, and then Crowley and then finally settled on Zimmer (I know I am missing about 10 other candidates) because they were concerned how Jersey Joe or Dr. Murray Sabrin would do at the top of the ticket with 2 open Congressional seats in what will clearly be a Democratic Year!

Well we know the answer to the question with Dick Zimmer already - he was a disaster at the top of the ticket! And this was when the New Jersey GOP was "strong".

So your rationale to support Dick Zimmer cannot be he will be a solid candidate in November because he has already proven himself to be a loser.

There must be another reason: perhaps you are buying in to the elitist rap from the hacks trying to hand on to what little power they have!

WAKE UP Mr. Eric - you are being used as a pawn in someone else's chess match (and they are making you look pretty foolish).

04/15/08 10:59 am

At least

At least Zimmer has always been a Republican.  After his general election defeat, he did not run away and join another party.  Oh wait, Murray did that after he lost in the primary.  He couldn't even get enough support to make it to the general.  So now I am supposed to jump up and down and support a guy who abandoned our party because he was a cry baby?  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, you know the rest...

Zimmer out poll Dole in '96

The release by camp Sabrin is a joke. Zimmer actually helped the NJ GOP congressional delegation hold the line...a few points here and there is god sent considering a very popular Bill Clinton was heading the Dem ticket that year.

04/15/08 11:01 am

HEH OC - why do you post lies on this blog

Dr. Murray Sabrin ran as a Libertarian for Governor in 1997 and he received the largest vote for a 3rd party candidate in New Jersey history - THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SUCCESSFUL campaign to me!

He then ran in the 2000 GOP Primary for U.S. Senate and lost - he didn't switch parties after he lost the Primary.

The grassroots will not allow you to post lies about Dr. Murray Sabrin and his record of achievement.

The facts are very simple - DICK ZIMMER is a L-O-S-E-R who cost the Republican Party a House Seat in 1996 and if he is the nominee who will cost us 2 House Seats (if not more) this November.

04/15/08 11:04 am

The Sabrin Supporters....

Just let em go folks...they won't have much to say after June 3rd.

04/15/08 11:05 am

the others...

Garrett?? Frelinghuysen?? Smith??

care to get involved....

04/15/08 11:05 am

sabrin's stupid spin

Zimmer himself was dragged down by Bob Dole in 1996. The idea that it was Zimmer who cost the GOP the 8th district is laughable. If anything, it was Zimmer who helped the GOP retain the 12th district seat in 1996...

04/15/08 11:07 am

Hey Ronnie...

3rd place is STILL 3rd place...

04/15/08 11:10 am

Mr. Democrat

Rodney endorsed Pennacchio.

Garrett won't get involved, although he was endorsed by Sabrin..ha.

I doubt Smith will get involved either, outside of the Jack Kelly endorsement Smith never really endorses anyone.

04/15/08 11:12 am

OK Genuises - EXPLAIN THIS:

Bob Dole was crushed by Bill Clinton in New Hampshire, yet Republican-Senate candidate Bob Smith WON

Bob Dole lost to Bill Clinton in New Mexico, yet Republican-Senate candidate Pete Domenici WON

Bob Dole lost to Bill Clinton in Maine, yet Republican-Senate candidate Susan Collins WON

Bob Dole lost to Bill Clinton in Oregon, yet Republican-Senate candidate Gordon Smith WON

THE EVIDENCE IS PRETTY CLEAR TO ME: Dick Zimmer is a L-O-S-E-R; he was a loser back in 1996 when the GOP was strong and he'd be a disaster in 2008 when Tom Wilson controls the GOP.

Let's hear some more of your lame excuses!

04/15/08 11:23 am

Fiscal conservative?

Consider the sources: LoBiondo, Ferguson and Saxton.  Not exactly Club for Growth material.  And two of them aren't even running for reelection.  What does that tell you?

04/15/08 11:30 am

The truth

If the truth hurts so be it.  Here is a quote from Murray Sabrin in 2000 "I joined the Republican Party in 1969."  Pretty clear that he was a Republican until he decided it was politically expediant to bolt to run under another party's banner.  So maybe you should do a little history on your guy.  That means he has fip-flopped more on which political party he wants to associated with than John Kerry and Hillary Clinton did on the Iraq War.  And thanks for the laugh.  Less than 5% is somehow "A SUCCESSFUL campaign"?  What a joke.

04/15/08 11:33 am

Loser?

Who is a two time L-O-S-E-R?  Love the CAPS by the way.  Angry little fellow aren't you?  By the way - the answer is Murray Sabrin.  At least Zimmer can actually win a primary and has proven it in the past.  I haven't heard you say a thing about any of the elections he won in his old District.  I would also LOVE (grrrrrr) to see how well the Libertarians did at the bottom of the ticket when Sabrin ran.  How many of them actually won a seat to anything?  Yes dog catcher can be included for the sake of M-A-K-I-N-G your argument.

04/15/08 11:39 am

I Guess OC can't answer the questions?

No matter how many times you try to deflect from the FACTS, Dick Zimmer is a L-O-S-E-R and cost the Republican Party in New Jersey a House seat in 1996.

Since you don't want to answer the other questions, how about a real easy question for you:

IF DICK ZIMMER WAS SUCH A GREAT CANDIDATE TO RUN IN 2008 FOR U.S. SENATE, WHY DID YOU AND OTHERS TRY TO PUSH A NIGHTCLUB OWNER FROM NEW YORK CITY TO RUN INSTEAD OF DICK ZIMMER?

It is pretty clear, this is a desperate move by desperate people trying to cling on to what little power they have left!

Clinging on to a L-O-S-E-R only smells of more desperation and the voters can smell the scent of desperation - your lack of answers to real questions has a distinct odor to them.

04/15/08 11:49 am

GET OFF OF THE CAPS

IN HONOR OF YOU, I WILL POST ALL IN CAPS TO SHOW YOU HOW RIDICULOUS IT IS.  FIRST. DO NOT PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH - GRRRRRRRRRRRR - I AM AN ANGRY SABRIN SUPPORTER.  Oops  sorry that would be you.  Darn - I just couldn't keep it going with the caps.  Annoying as hell.  Anyway.  I never "PUSHED" anyone on anybody.  Other than you "PUSHING" Murray Sabrin on the Republican Party, no one is forcing anyone down their throat.  And I believe that the questions you have been WHINING about have been answered by others.  When will you ANSWER my questions?  When will you admit to LYING about Sabrin not bolting the Republican Party for political expedicancy the first time?  Again, I will state, the only LOSER here is Murray Sabrin.  He was a LOSER as a Republican in his FAILED Senate race.  He was a LOSER as a Libertarian in his FAILED Governors race.  If you want to stand with the two time state wide LOSER, so be it.  Just know that YOUR LOSER is, well, a LOSER.  Gee - can;'t you come up with a better name to call people?  How about GotMyButt Handedtomeinthelection?  Sabrin has got that covered.

04/15/08 12:03 pm

...for political expediency....?

So, Dr. Sabrin did something for political expediency, did he?

So he is eminently qualified to be Republican.... or a Democrat...

04/15/08 12:26 pm

hey NJRonaldReagan.....

what ever happened to "thou shall not speak ill of any fellow Republican?"

you wear Reagan's name on your sleeve like a badge of honor but forget (ignore?) his Eleventh Commandment?
