Two Hudson County legislators endorse Andrews

Two freshman legislators from Hudson County endorsed Rob Andrews for U.S. Senate today, bucking Hudson County Democratic Chairman/Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy’s decision to back Lautenberg.

State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham and Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone, who both ran on the HCDO line in the June legislative primaries against Union City Mayor Brian Stack’s rival slate, threw their allegiance behind Andrews today.

Cunningham felt strongly enough about the endorsement to quote a passage from the Bible.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose. I

believe that the time has come for change. Congressman Andrews represents the change we need in Washington," she said.

US Marshal Job?

That is interesting that Senator Cunningham would fail to endorse Lautenberg. It was Lautenberg who made her husband the US Marshal for NJ during the 1990's.

ugh

Hey Tony, do you remember when Rob Andrews drove to Bayonne every weekend to campaign against you and Conahan while he stuck his nose where it didn't belong campaigning for Joe Doria's team. He even laughed at you on stage publically after you stole those signs.

Or Sandy - do you remember which US Senator continued to support Glenn unconditionally - Or do you remember Rob Andrews campaigning against you last time?

Oh right - I forgot you have Ray Lesniak taking care of you now.

I don't know how sellsout sleep with themselves at night. You guys represent everything that is wrong with NJ Politics.

Jim McGreevey wrote in his book 'if lynch, lesniak and norcross agreed on a statewide candidate nobody else has a chance' - Well replace Lynch with Adbuato today (who is more powerful than every with Joe D., taking out Wilfredo Caraballo and Hector Corchado) and its pretty accurate.

Now you have a situation where the democratic party bosses are trying to dump a 24 year veteran senator who represents the true progressive values of the Democratic Party with a congressman who wrote George Bush's authorization to go to war with Iraq.

Mr. Adubato, who has done more for the poor people of Newark than anyone else there, once said "I can't imagine anyone running against the Democratic Party candidate in a primary" in reference to Freddy Caraballo - Well Frank Lautenberg, who is backed by Cryan, Corzine and Menendez is the party candidate and this war against the political bosses of NJ is the most important battle ever - because if Lautenberg doesent win this, the future of Democracy in NJ will be in serious jepordy. It makes me sick.

Andrews for Senate

Stay  tuned ; you have not heard anything yet !

04/04/08 8:19 pm

no surprise sandy

Glenn stabbed Bob Menendez in the back after taking his political and monetary support.  Why would anyone expect anything different from Sandy?

And as for her bible quote, Sandy never misses the chance to invoke religion - it's her ultimate abrogation of personal responsibility.  Endorsing Andrews was God's will.

Democracy in NJ

Having party primaries is a healthy sign of Democracy. However, the way both parties conduct such primaries just show what is wrong with these parties. GOP goes against its rank and file to force upon them an establishment candidate whoever it is on April 7th.

Democrats would like to have an order and a perfect rotation system that does not allow for outsiders. Their bosses have their own ideas how that order and rotation system should work therefore you have corruption and patronage jobs. Accidentaly, US Senator Lautenberg did not grease the bosses pockets too much therefore he must go. His age and six more years of lost grease is just too much for party bosses.

Yes, Democrats are so arrogant in NJ that they think that they can dump Frank and put up another candidate without loosing their seat. That goes accross of NJ and accross all elected offices therefore Rothman must go as well.

Democrats just like the Communist Party conducts their periodic bloody purges. This year, it is a year of purges. Bergen Co. will see more of these purges coming up this year and the next year.

So buckle up because we are for the rough ride.

Question:

Question: Was it Sandy Cunningham's Bilblical quote or Joe Cardwell's quote telling her what to say?

It's a real shame Cunningham never had the courtesy to let her County Chairman and Mayor Jerry Healy what her intentions were. That would have at least been proper considering the support he has shown her and how he dragged her on stage with Obama.

But then again we are talking about Sandy. not Glen.  Big Difference! Glen had class. God rest his soul.

Is Sandy running for Mayor in 2009?

Cynicism

I'm sorry that New Jersey politics have spawned such cynical comments. New Jersey finally has a real choice between the politics of yesterday and the hope for tomorrow, and yet we are so consumed with skeptic conspiracy theories about which party boss has control of whom that we forget to look at the big issues that affect people's lives. Rob Andrews isn't beholden to any party boss, and anyone who says so should prove it. Let's focus on the issues and which candidate is better prepared to change our state for the better.

04/04/08 11:41 pm

funniest "Quote of the weak" <sic>

You;'re joking right?"

"Rob isn't beholden to any party boss"

One word for clueless.." Norcross"

More Cynicism

Yet another example of how degraded our politics have become. Thanks for the example.

Anyone who says that Andrews has compromised his values or his commitment to NJ should prove it. I think it's really easy to make loose affiliations.

Barack Obama, who I support and actively campaign for, was on Hardball on Wednesday, and I found one of his comments applicable to NJ politics, and especially Rob Andrews:

"Politics in Chicago, as it was once said, is not tiddlywinks. It's not beanbag. You know, it's a tough town. But what I've been able to do is to rise politically without compromising my ethics, without compromising my principles."

The fact is, Andrews is shaking up the way things are normally done in NJ. Normally we'd wait for Lautenberg to retire, then wait for the Gov. to appoint one of his friends. Andrews refuses to play this game anymore, and he's putting his trust in the hands of NJ voters. If that's not character, I don't know what is.

Setting the record straight

There are a few points made that are completely incorrect. First of all Rob Andrews and the South Jersey Democrats were arch enemies of former State Senator and Bayonne Mayor Joe Doria. They even went as far as to block his appointment as Assembly Speaker and push Albio Sires into the spot. Andrews is the perfect candidate for Tony Chiappone to get behind.

Hudson County has just been waiting for the Healy/Cunningham relationship to take a nose dive and here it has finally happened. Don’t be surprised if Lesniak, Nocross, and company get behind Sandy Cunningham for Mayor next year against Healy. Menendez has been running himself ragged trying to strong arm people into supporting Lautenberg, so it makes sense for Sandy to go with Andrews since Menendez was her late husband’s arch nemesis. With Bayonne and Jersey City now in play Andrews looks posed to make serious in roads in Hudson County. Chiappone was the highest vote getter in Bayonne the last time her ran for Councilman and Cunningham seems to have picked up in Wards A and F where Glenn left off. If Andrews can do well in Bayonne and Jersey City and possibly strike up a deal with the insurgents that Brian Stack left behind in this peace deal then he can take a nice chunk out of Hudson County.

Andrews would be smart to bracket with some of the candidates running for Freeholder in Hudson County. Stack proved the people of Hudson County will vote for an alternative party, but Andrews will have to spend the money Stack did to make it happen. A word to the wise for Andrews would be to make deals with Steven Fulop, Lou Manzo, and L. Harvey Smith. If you can get the anti Healy crew together to support Andrews, then Lautenberg loses Jersey City. Let the war games begin!

04/05/08 1:20 am

Stack is with Lautenberg

Accoring to the local political reporter in today's Jersey Journal Stack is with Lautenberg. The man who ran because a philosphical and generational change was taking place is now back with the HCDO, who tried to derail him. Good move Brian you had us all fooled into thinking you had a back bone. Norcross and company will make sure Stack remains nothing more than a 2 bit Hudson County hack in the Senate now that he has crossed them. What they did to Joe Doria will look like child's play when they get done with Brian "P.eople First" Stack. Brian is now being patted on the back by the very men who stuck a knife in it to begin with. This very scenerio is why people get disgusted with politicans. Stack's Character Defects will be his undoing.

Despite it all

Despite all about who did what for who in the past....these are clear fact and anyone who refuses to accept it has issues with their own principals and belief system.

* Rob Andrews wrote George Bush's resolution to go to war with Iraq. He supported the war and the basis of the war all the way until last year. He is an ardent supporter of the Patriot Act and a consistutional amendment on flag burning. You CAN'T represent change when you've been in congress for 18 years and a political insider for 25.

* Frank Lautenberg has been progressive Democrats for 24 years in the US Senate. He had the foresight and vision to challenge this war in Iraq when the "much younger" Rob Andrews didn't.

Rob Andrews would do great in a Republican primary because there isn't much of a difference between him and 'Jersey Joe' Pennachio. You can't just run for your own ego and because you want to get ahead. You can't run on 'change' when your part of the Washington establishment.

There is not one credible aspect of Rob Andrews' candidacy except that he wants to get ahead. Unfort., his pro-war, DLC beliefs do not resonate with the majority of Democrats in this state and on June 3rd - Democrats will celebrate Frank Lautenberg's victory and the political bosses will learn that the voters of New Jersey have more influence than they do.

04/05/08 3:29 am

and to refute that other fact

I was with Tony Chiappone during the entire campaign when he was the top vote getter. Rob Andrews worked like hell with team Doria to make sure team Conahan lost.

Chiappone's nothing more than a double dipping sell out and Sandy Cunningham is nothing like her late husband.

Have to give some kudos to Joe Cardwell and Ray Lesniak though.

04/05/08 3:31 am

Cunningham-Menendez

it would be absolutely rediculous if Sandra Cunningham makes her political moves based on her late husbands fued with Bob Menendez.

04/05/08 1:27 pm

Lady MacCunningham

Don't kid yourself, Zack.  Glenn was a nice guy, but no political genius.  Everything he did with respect to Menendez was signed, sealed, delivered, and choreographed by Jackson, Cardwell, and Sandy.

You see, all Glenn wanted was to be JC's first black mayor, but that wasn't enough for the triumvirate. They wanted all of Hudson County and probably had their greedy eyes on Trenton.  So, while Glenn reveled in photo ops (God knows, he left running the city to his band of thugs - Drayton, Ayala, McGee, etc), Bobby, Joe, and Sandy plotted the betrayal of Menendez, calling him a "terrorist" and recruiting a neophyte named Steve Fulop to run against him in the primary.

If Sandy and her crew were to get back into city hall, she'd spend half of her term settling scores and getting revenge on those she holds responsible for Glenn's death.

And as for the HCDO who supported her run for Senate, they need to dust off those old 45s of the Ojays..."they smilin in your face, all the time they wanna take your place, the backstabbers, backstabbers"

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

Great move by Cunningham and Chiappone

How old is Lautenberg? Wasn't it Frank Lautenberg who said his opponent was too old at 65? What 65 is too old but not 85? Kudos to Mrs. Cunningham stopping the old party buisness as usual attitude.

04/06/08 12:10 am

Lautenberg too old

Cynicism your right on the money, lets be honest here it sounds like alot of people here are trying to maintain the status quo.Hudson county politics as usual. by Cunningham doing this it shows leadership, she is just not going along with the program.

04/06/08 12:13 am

Underestimating

Do not underestimate Senator Brian Stack's endorsment of Lautenberg as "peace" with the HCDO. Stack may have just not liked Andrews as our next US Senator. Stack IS running a whole slate of Freeholders againist the HCDO, be sure about that... No peace at all.

I found it werid that Tony and Sandy endorsed Andrews though. Andrews was always againist them both. What their reason were (it's more then a bible qoute) we may never know, but I hope it's a good one.

I doubt Sandy is running for Mayor though, she has interest in someone else's seat... say someone named Menendez.

04/06/08 9:34 am

Great Move Chiappone and Cunningham

Let's be honest. Lautenberg is really just too old. I've read some of the comments here and one of the most puzzling was the accusation that Andrews campaigned against Conaghan who Chiappone supported last year against Doria. Where does this nonsense come from? Andrews was nowhere near that campaign. And of course, why would he be in the first place? There isn't a single South Jersey politician with an ounce of love for Joe Doria.

Look....Both guys are credible. But it's past time for Lautenberg who should have stayed retired when the Toricelli fiasco pulled him back in. Oh yeah. I can't wait to see Lautenberg campaign. And if he does, I don't think it will be outside of Bingo Halls-and those will be the ones that he currently plays in.
