Whitman wins Middlesex

Kate Whitman won the endorsement of the Middlesex County Republican Party at its convention in Woodbridge this morning.

After some confusion that required a re-vote, Whitman won the first round of balloting, earning the 50% plus one requirement with 48 out of 85 votes cast. Former Summit Councilwoman P. Kelly Hatfield was the runner up, with 17 votes. State Sen. Leonard Lance came in next with 14 votes, followed by Scotch Plains Mayor Marty Marks with five votes and Iraq war vet Tom Roughneen with one.

That gives Whitman the line in this county, which between the three towns of Edison, South Plainfield and Woodbridge makes up the smallest portion of the four-county district.

But despite the county’s size, supporters said that it would give Whitman crucial momentum going into the Somerset County convention next Thursday – the last of the four counties left to award its endorsement.

Lance has the county line in Hunterdon and Hatfield in Union.

“I don’t regret my endorsement. In fact, I feel vindicated,” said conservative activist and blogger Michael Illions, who endorsed Whitman last month, getting some flack from fellow conservatives for the choice.

Lance downplayed the loss, and before the convention noted that he has the line in his native Hunterdon County, which produces the district’s biggest chunk of Republican primary voters.

“I’m pleased with my showing – I want to congratulate Kate. This is a step in the process, and now three candidates have a line. Kelly, Kate and I,” said Lance. “I think each convention stands on its own, and we’re working very hard in Somerset.”

Seven out of the district’s nine congressional candidates competed at today’s event: Whitman, Hatfield, Lance, Marks, Roughneen, Warren Township Mayor Victor Sordillo and Seton Hall professor A.J. Amar (neither of whom earned any votes).

Two other candidates who are also running for the seat did not attend: political consultant Chris Venis and Bridgewater Councilman Michael Hsing.

Each of the seven candidates got three minutes to make their cases to the audience. Roughneen, a former prosecutor and Iraq War vet, started by noting that Marine Corporal Stephen Tatum had been cleared of charges that he helped kill 24 Iraqis in Haditha in 2005.

“I hate to use the word, but we have this scumbag, Congressman John Murtha, who charged marines who were doing their jobs with being killers,” he said.

Roughneen said that he has only been a registered Republican for a few years, but had voted that way since the early 1990s.

“I have always voted for Republicans since I was in College and (former Gov. Jim) Florio screwed us,” he said.

Amar based his speech around economic themes, saying that work the economy had tanked since Ronald Reagan was President and that America needs to restore its economic supremacy worldwide. He also noted that he’s proud to be an Indian-American Republican.

“Someone was just asking me only about 10 minutes ago, ‘Are you Indian?’ I said yes. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be a Democrat?’” he said. “Democrats, if you’re listening to me, eat your hearts out – I am a Republican.”

Whitman said that she has well over 600 donors and noted that by the time her campaign files on Monday, she’ll have raised $400,000. She reinforced her campaign’s theme of fiscal conservatism, and took a small shot at some of her rival Republicans for comparing her to her mother, former Gov. Christie Whitman, who stood watching. But she saved most of her criticism for Democrat Linda Stender.

“Like some of my fellow candidates, she can try to campaign against Christie Whitman, not Kate Whitman,” she said. “But I’ll remind her that I’m my own person with my own views, and I’m confident that voters will not fall for that same cheap trick.”

Hatfield said that her years as a Summit Councilwoman showed that she knows how to balance a budget and cut spending.

“Throughout my public service I have promoted conservative Republican values,” she said. “I’m proud of my record and it stands in direct contrast to Lina Stender’s.”

Lance gave a particularly impassioned speech where he mostly ripped into Linda Stender. He also sought to show conservative voters that, on many issues, he stands with them – like illegal immigration.

“No sanctuary cities. No drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. No nation can long endure unless it has control of its voters,” he said.

Rounding out the candidate speeches was Marks, who asked voters not to compromise their conservative values, touting his fiscal and social conservatism.

“Without a doubt I can be clearly defined as an across-the-board conservative on all of the issues.”

"it would give Whitman crucial momentum going into the Somerset County convention next Thursday" - say what? What momentum?

What has Kate Whitman really done?

What has Kate Whitman done without her mother having had some hand in it?  She even admits that her "successful" small business' biggest client is an organization run by her mother.  She lost the Somerset County freeholder election and now she expects to win for Congress?  The Middlesex County convention result was a big joke.  I hope the voters are smart enough to see through all that.

Sore Losers

1 county out of 4 in this district had no horse in the race... therefore whoever pounded the pavement and worked the hardest was going to win it. GOP girl sounds like Lance's campaign manager. Are you saying Lance won the Hunterdon County convention through hard work... did everybody forget that his father was a political big wig in Hunterdon too?

I have been watching this race very closely and saw something a while ago in Whitman that others are starting to see.. she is her own woman and is working harder than all of the other candidates combined. This woman knocked on my door three times for my vote in my county's convention. She EARNED the Middlesex win today.

Stop crying about it.

Whitman is going nowhere!

Whitman is going nowhere! Middlesex towns like Woodbridge are so desperate for finances, that they'll go with the highest $$$ bidder.

Good Job Kate

Kate is working hard and her efforts are paying off.  Lance may have a lot of "establishment" backing but he isn't raising any money and he isn't gaining traction.  All of the cheap shots at Kate just show the desperation of the career politicans who are surprised by how well she's doing.

Middlesex is a huge win because it is the only county without a "home candidate."  Lance's "hard work" didn't earn him Hunterdon, he's the only Hunterdon candidate and he's been in office forever.  Good luck in Somerset, Kate.

Hardest Worker

Sen Lance is winning because his father's connections and big money. Hatfield, I have no idea what's he doing cause I hardly hear him. Kate Whitman on the other hand has been busting her butt to get that vote and has address real issues.

Unlike the others she not shouting out "But I did THIS last year". She is standing and telling the crowd what's she going to do in Congress.  Unlike the other two, she's actually going door to door and not just saying "Vote for me". She's having conversations on what issues are affecting NJ and the US and how she plans on handling em.

Even though Lance might win cause his daddy's power and the money... ether way, Good job Kate!

Lance is winning

Not because of big money or his fathers many years of service to ALL of NEW JERSEY, not just Hunterdon County.   Lance wins big in Hunterdon due to years and years of hard work in Hunterdon.   Kate is a greaqt contender, and through this race will get some needed exposure that can help her in the future somewhere politically, but cannot take Linda Stender in the Fall.

Stick with Lance

Impressed with Kate

I am not in the Ferguson District but was on-hand at the Middlesex Convention.  I must admit that while I am fully behind Senator Lance because he has done a great job in Trenton, I came away impressed with Kate Whitman.  I think the Senator will win and he will certainly be missed in Trenton.  I just hope that if Lance wins that Kate Whitman tries her hand at running for state office.

Joking Joe?

I must admit that while I am fully behind Senator Lance because he has done a great job in Trenton

And this statement is based on ... what ?

03/30/08 7:26 pm

Based on. . .

That statement is based on the fact that he has fought, in court, to stop the constant borrowing into debt that the Democrats have done the last 6 years.  He was the minority leader and, as a minority, there wasn't much he could do legislatively.  So he fought in court.  That's more than your man, Murray, did.

Give Kate Break... She's Important to our future

Say want you want but she won. I don't live in the 7th, I'm not involved in her campaign or anyone elses. However I watched this convention battle closely.

First. None of us wouldn't use every ethical political tool we have to win. That being said Kate has her family name (as did her mom, some people forget her father was a great and respected party man)and access to a lot of powerful people. If you have a problem with that, than you know nothing about politics. By the way that means you also have a problem with John Quincy Adams, GWB and a lot of politicos..

That being said.

1. She's worked really hard in Middlesex. She went do to door more than any other candidate working Middlesex.
2. Kate's been working in politics for at least 8 years in campaigns and various jobs. She's clearly learned a lot from those positions.
3.She's got a great staff. All joined her because they know her and like her. They're some of the best young GOP operatives and they are really devoted to her success. Not because of her name, her mother or money. I'm not so sure all the other candidates with paid staff can say that.
4.She's a great public speaker.

Those who want to bash Kate should really think about what their doing. Like Tom Kean Jr. This next generation of great political families are smart and choose politics because they love it and enjoy serving the people. They were raised in high level politics and clearly see their parents successes, weaknesses and mistakes. They will be a big part of the New Jersey's GOP future. They can win, may be this primary and general, may be not... but they will win major offices.

Lets give Kate the space to develop and grow into the great leader she can be. She also has the right to be listened on her own merits and not has an extension of her mother (the good and bad).

Bashing her would be like bashing your own future.

You Had Me At Hello ..... But!

You wrote a very elequent and thought out comment on Kate Whitman, and  you had me at "hello", but lost me at the comparison to Tom Kean, Jr.

Not knocking Tom Kean, Jr., but other then both having a parent that were N.J. Governor's, and I hope that's the point you were making, Kate Whitman is a far better candidate with more conservative positions than Tom Kean, Jr. was and had in 2006 for Senate...

Kate Whitman is a geniuine candidate, she is the real deal, and will be a breath of fresh air in DC..

I tell everyone who will listen, that she is going to be our own version of Marsha Blackburn, (Congresswoman, R-TN).

Lance is Fortunate

Lance is fortunate that he has his fellow legislatures backing.  I'm scratching my head why this group didn't think he was good enough to be minority leader for a second term?  Is this the classic of promoting someone upstairs to get rid of him?
