Chris Myers' Statement on Russia-Georgia Conflict
Calls on Russian government to end aggression,
accept immediate cease fire and return to pre-conflict positions
Mount Holly, August 11, 2008-Decorated combat veteran and congressional candidate Chris Myers (NJ-3) released the following statement today on the escalating conflict between Russia and Georgia:
"The Russian government should end its aggression, accept an immediate cease fire and return to positions held before the conflict without further delay," said Myers, who served aboard the USS Bunker Hill during the Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. "The world community should not tolerate this senseless violence and the innocent civilian lives it has claimed. These differences should be resolved at a bargaining table, not on a battlefield."
Myers said he backed efforts by United States and world leaders to bring the fighting to a swift end by working cooperatively.
"I commend our leaders and those around the world for their united front and strong commitment to a peaceable resolution," said Myers, who studied defense policy and strategy while earning his Master's Degree from Cornell University. "This should be a lesson to everyone that the world is a still a tremendously dangerous place and that violence like this can erupt, and quickly escalate, at any time."
Myers for Congress Campaign Manager Chris Russell concluded that, if elected, Myers would be better prepared to deal with national security and foreign policy issues than his opponent in the race.
"Chris Myers' diverse educational, military and international business background makes him far and away the most qualified candidate in this race to address the very serious issues facing our country and the world today," said Russell.
