(ATLANTIC CITY) - Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli today said that New Jersey's unique approach to legalized gambling has helped the state avoid or overcome many of the challenges facing other Northeastern states with casino gaming.
Burzichelli (D-Gloucester), chairman of the Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee, made his assessment after moderating a panel discussion on the topic of legalized gambling at the 48th Annual Meeting & Regional Policy Forum of the Council of State Governments - Eastern Regional Conference.
"Many of the CSG delegates who had never been to Atlantic City have been very impressed and excited with what the city has to offer," said Burzichelli. "We have capitalized on the unique combination of the Atlantic Ocean, world-class gaming, fine dining, high-end shopping, and entertainment to provide an experience that is truly one-of-a-kind."
The panel discussion, which included representatives of casino gaming, government monitors, and legislators from New Jersey and neighboring states with legalized gambling in the Northeast, focused on the challenges facing gaming as competition grows amid an economy in the midst of a recession.
According to Burzichelli, in nearly every instance, New Jersey proved that it was on the right track, providing world-class opportunities for both gamers and the casino industry.
"New Jersey continues to set the standard for casino gaming in the Northeast," said Burzichelli. "The environment we provide - from regulatory oversight to access to activities - afford casino owners and consumers with a quality experience that is second to none."
With a membership that includes 10 states, five Canadian Provinces, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Eastern Regional Conference is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information among state policy makers, business leaders, and the academic community. The 48th Annual Meeting & Regional Policy Forum is taking place from August 10-13 in Atlantic City.
