Milam, Albano Bill Renaming U.S. Route 9 in Cape May 'Police Unity Tour Memorial Highway' Becomes Law

Assembly Democrats News Release

MILAM/ALBANO BILL RENAMING U.S. ROUTE 9 IN CAPE MAY 'POLICE UNITY TOUR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY' BECOMES LAW

(TRENTON) - Legislation Assemblymen Matthew W. Milam and Nelson T. Albano sponsored to designate Route 9 in Cape May County as the "Police Unity Tour Memorial Highway" today was signed into law by Governor Jon S. Corzine.

"We have a responsibility to honor those New Jersey law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of protecting the public," said Milam (D-Cumberland).  "Memorializing these brave men and women will help us keep them in our thoughts and deliver a modicum of peace to their families."

The Milam/Albano measure (S-632/A-2329) dedicates U.S. Route No. 9 in Cape May County as the 'Police Unity Tour Memorial Highway,' in honor of the sacrifices police officers make in the name of duty and in recognition of the efforts the members of the Police Unity Tour make to venerate their fallen comrades.  It also requires that the signage used to mark the designation be paid for with private funds.

Created in New Jersey in 1997 to raise public awareness and funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, the Police Unity Tour has grown into a national organization with over 750 members in eight chapters throughout the country.  The organization continues to raise money and awareness of fallen law enforcement officers with an annual fundraising bike tour to the national memorial in D.C., a leg of which encompasses several stops along Route 9 in Cape May County.

"The efforts of the Police Unity Tour remind us every day of the sacrifices and dangers law enforcement personnel face," said Albano (D-Cumberland).  "Memorializing their efforts is the least we can do to show our support and honor the memory of their fallen brethren."

The new law takes immediate effect.
