George Warrington, who served as President of Amtrak and as Executive Director of New Jersey Transit, died today after a long illness. His career in transportation included service as Executive Director of the Delaware River Port Authority and as Deputy Commissioner of Transportation. Warrington was a rare breed of powerful government official in New Jersey: widely respected and of considerable integrity, and without serious detractors.

George Warrington Made a Difference...
George Warrington made the dreams of our small community possible in re-establishing Tourist Train Service between Richland Village and Tuckahoe while Executive Director of New Jersey Transit. George truly had the vision in making this happen depite many obstacles. He was a big picture guy who was able to handle projects big and small. Our project was small, but he was big enough to see it. He will be sadly missed.
Sincerely,
Mayor Chuck Chiarello,
Buena Vista Township, Atlantic County
A combination of a gentleman and an effective leader
I am so sorry to read of the death of George Warrington. He was extraordinarily effective in any position he was given. In my dealings with George, I found him to be able to bring a keen business mind and approach to what were essentially government services. In all instances he conducted himself as a gentleman of great integrity, vision and passion for his work. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and many friends.
A Great Public Servant
George greatly improved both Amtrak and NJ Transit in his tenure at those agencies. He brought the Acela online at Amtrak and expanded service on Transit, against big political odds. He was also a very nice man. Sad to see him pass away - peace to his family.
