Ex-Hockey star seeks Assembly seat

South Jersey isn’t exactly Hollywood, but you might think it is based on the Republican legislative slate in the seventh district.

Ok, not really.

But in that district, two out of the three Republican candidates are at least local celebrities. In addition to incumbent state Senator Diane Allen, who was the face of Philadelphia’s Channel 10 news for many years, the Republicans are rolling out former Philadelphia Flyer All-Star Brian Propp.

District seven is primarily working class, with a Democratic registration advantage of nearly 2-1 but a strong independent streak. In contrast to a high profile State Senate match between Democrat Rich Dennison, who’s running a spirited if long shot campaign to oust Diane Allen, the Assembly race has been a lower profile affair, with Propp and Willingboro attorney Nancy Griffin taking on five-term incumbents Herb Conaway and Jack Conners.

In 2005, Conners and Conaway easily beat their Republican opponents, Mike Savala and Joe Donnelly. But this time may not be as easy.

Propp played most of his professional hockey career with the Flyers, from 1979 to 1990 -- the team that most fans in this South Jersey district root for over the Devils. He still broadcasts games over the radio in addition to his job as a business development executive at Harbor Lights Financial Group.

Ingrid Reed, Director of the New Jersey Project at the Eagleton Institute of Politics, said that she’s got district seven on her races to watch list, mainly for the Assembly race. Celebrity can boost a campaign, especially for a relatively low-profile position like an Assembly seat, said Reed.

“A person who is relatively known outside of the politics of the legislative candidates, which tends to be under the radar, gives a real advantage in a district where you can imagine it can change from one party to the other,” said Reed.

The celebrity factor certainly helped Bill Bradley, the former Knicks star who won a U.S. Senate primary in 1978 against the establishment choice, State Treasurer Richard Leone.. But it didn’t pull Heisman Trophy winner Pete Dawkins through his campaign against Frank Lautenberg in 1988. Nor was it enough to propel tennis pro Althea Gibson to a State Senate seat -- she lost a three-way primary race in 1977. And in 2001, Olympic Gold Medal winner Milton Campbell, well known as a community leader in Plainfield, lost a bid for State Senate to Joseph Suliga.

But celebrity exposure has already given Propp an opportunity to make a name for him, even if this is his first time venturing into politics. But while Propp acknowledges that fame helps him build name recognition, he’s not expecting it to carry him through the election.

“It’s not just ‘hey pick me because I played for the Flyers. That doesn’t cut any mustard,” said Propp. “But the name recognition will help. I believe I’ll be listened to, I’ll have a lot of peoples’ ears in Trenton.”

Propp said he was inspired to run by high property taxes, something he said that Conners and Conaway haven’t done enough to fix during their nine years in Trenton.

“I think anybody that’s lived in NJ the last five years and has seen what’s going on, they’re not just very happy about it and I’m the type of person if I believe that something’s not right, I’m going to fight for it and the people,” said Propp.

Conaway said that Republicans are to blame for the fiscal mess that New Jersey finds itself in, and noted that he had voted for property tax rebates – something, he pointed out, that Diane Allen did not do when she voted against the budget.

“They elevated borrowing in spending into an art form. First they borrowed against the pension funds of workers, put a lot of expensive programs in place and failed to fund them, then they put forward past budgets that didn’t have the revenues that they purported to be there,” said Conaway.

Both Propp and Griffin characterize themselves as moderate Republicans in the same vein as Diane Allen. They’re both pro-choice, and while both support civil unions for gay and lesbian couples and complete equal rights with married straight couples, neither thought it needed to be called marriage.

Griffin doesn’t have the fame advantage that her running mate has, but she’s confident that her status as an active Air Force reservist/civil rights and family attorney will appeal to veterans, who make up an important voting bloc in the district.

“I’ve been spending my entire adult life in service to my country… I only represent plaintiffs in service to people,” said Griffin.

Griffin’s military background is probably no coincidence. Conners, her opponent, is Chairman of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, and lists veteran-related laws he’s passed as some of his proudest achievements.

Recently, he penned a law keeping protestors 500 feet away from any funeral they’re picketing. And when the Westboro Baptist Church, a group that carries signs that say things like “Pray for More Dead Soldiers," rolled into New Jersey to protest at the funeral Army Pfc. David J. Bentz III, the law was enforced.

Conners disputed the idea that he was somehow pro-tax. He noted that he’s been a strong advocate of resource sharing between towns to save money, and voted for a budget that offered a property tax rebate.

Conners admits that fame can help Propp, but thinks it can only take far. Even he watched Diane Allen on the news before she became a legislator.

“Clearly over the years Senator Allen has benefited from being a celebrity…….. I guess even I watched her,” said Conners. But, he added, “If you have the benefit of celebrity, I still think you’ve got to factor in what is it you’re going to do and what it is you’ve done.”

Propp

For the record, Propp did not play his entire career with the Flyers. He spent time with the Bruins, North Stars and Whalers, and also played in Europe. FWIW, Propp was the victim of one of the most vicious cheap shots in the history of the NHL from Chris Chelios (he MUST be a Democrat, right? just kidding). I wish Brian and Nancy all the best in very tough district. Should be a spirited race.

Nice!

This means we're one step closer to Al Leiter running for US Senate!

Propp

Propp is far from a celebrity around these parts. I don't know of anyone who has even heard of him. Oh wait, I did meet a huge hockey fan who knew him from his playing days and being on the radio, but that sure wasn't going to stop him from voting Democratic this year. Conaway and Conners are the true local celebrities now from having served for so long. Propp's name recognition couldn't be squat compared with their two names.  Nothing against Mr. Propp, but I don't know why he was even picked except that the Burlco Republicans must've mistakenly thought he was better known than he is.  I don't believe he even has a college education.  Getting your teeth knocked out on the ice doesn't exactly prepare you for getting Trenton's fiscal house in order. Conaway and Conners by more than 20%, especially this year.

Hey Ron!

Learn to post only once! That being said, I really don't think being a hockey player is going to be a real advantage in this district where there is a large minority population. The Stanley Cup finals had lower ratings than the Food Network.

08/23/07 10:29 am

Ummm...

I fail to see how this brings Al Leiter any closer to running for Senate...Maybe in Dino's world it does. If I were Al I'd keep doing what I am doing and making more money than I would in the Senate, and with a hell of alot less headaches.

08/23/07 11:04 am

No problem Ron

Don't worry about it Ron, we know while you were typing Martin sat on your keyboard.

Propp

The 7th District with a split represnetation is one of the best served in SJ. Allen, Conaway and Conners have all done their respective jobs well. When the R's had control of the State House and Governor's office,Diane was able to deliver funds for needed projects. Now that the D's have control Herb and Jack have done a tremendous job getting funds for needed District projects. Keep the 7th as is and vote for the incumbents. Hats off to Dennison, Propp and Griffin for their time and effort to run for public office. Does this mean Propp won't be able to do Flyer's games until after the election?

08/23/07 11:52 am

Tim Kerr

I applaud the Republicans for running Brian Propp and suggest the Democrats counter with Tim Kerr, the king of the garbage goal. Given that the current political climate is in the Dems favor all that Kerr would have to do was stand in front of the net and whack whack away at the puck like he did in his playing days

A few months ago, PoliticsNJ did a thread on who was running for what seats and who were safe, unsafe and toss up. Conners and Conaway were both in the tossup! Now, Diane was in the safe section, but it makes sense about C & C. Herb Conaway has been on the outs for many years because he is too scared and too much of a dolt to move the party forward. Conaway has sworne to be the first "African American Governer" in the state of NJ years ago. What happened?? As of last year, Conaway was supposed to run against Diane and he showed his true colors. So, sufficient to say, he is stuck where he is. Of the two, Jack Conners IMHO is a gentleman and has a lot more class than Herbie. Propp is a nice guy, and with a toss up there, it is anyone's race for Assembly.

Something we finally agree on! Anyway, those categories can't be read as Bible truth, as I'm sure you're smart enough to know. That was just Wally's interpretation (or the team at this site) of the races. And, the site here would, I'm sure, point that out.  Hell, it wasn't even based on polling, which as u and I also agree isn't even that accurate much of the time.  Plus, Conaway and Conners were in different categories there from what I can recall because I wrote a comment on that point. Conaway and Conners are safe. I'll admit that Diane is typically safe. But, I see that starting to change, bit by bit. Remember, the real race is just starting and Dennison has gotten his name out there a lot in the past few months in the local press. With his aggressive campaign style, I can only see that increasing post-Labor Day.

And, besides WAGG for Griffin, what endorsements have your 7th assembly candidates gotten? Let me guess. None? Incumbency is the key to endorsements. Everyone knows that.

Incumbency

Not always but remember, Diane is out there doing her job and gaining respect and support. Dennison is just the dem running against her, that is the difference.

Would you guys grow up? Martin states his opinion and as far as I'm concerned his comments are very well written and fact-laden. The personal invective seen far too often on this site--especially with South Jersey races, particularly those in Burlco--really turns me off. And just because Martin and I seem to be just about the only ones posting positively about Burlco Democrats, while dozens of Republicans bash us on threads here, we are all smart enough to realize that that isn't representative of Burlco, District 7 and possibly even District 8. Let's have fun but in a mature way. That's all I ask. And yes, I've been guilty of posting stupid stuff before too, but I've apologized for that and won't do anymore of that.

You know what? I respect you. I already know that our votes will be at odds, but we have agreed to disagree and that's ok. We haven't called each other names and that's the way it should be. I just want to state, as I have in the past, the respect I have for both Allen and Dennison for sticking their necks out to benefit us. Let's not forget that. If you look at both of their resumes, both of them could without a doubt make much more money in the private sector than seeking to serve the public. Although, I'll vote for Dennison and you'll vote for Allen, let us both respect their desire to be public servants. It just isn't right how people belittle those who stick their necks out for nothing more than... US! If you can get elected to the NJ State Legislature (even if just nominated for the racce) I think you have skills that any private sector employer would be happy to pay you lots for. I merely want to put things into perspective here. And, for the record, I don't hate Diane Allen. I just think Dennison is the better choice for the future. We disagree but we shall not hate or it demonstrates that we aren't as great as we think we are, or hope to be.

Red Jersey

I must state at the chuckle I had at the Redjersey.com .net, whatever the hell it is site. It is, serisouly, one of the most pathetic sites I've ever seen. Every article is either written by one of three people--Eric Sedler, George Ajjan, and "catzmom." Absolutely a lame and reactionary site. Bluejersey.net kicks the crap out of you guys. Look, knock my friends, including Dennison and Conners and Conaway and Dr. Bader and I just laugh. Any chance of getting anyone with an IQ higher than 90 to post an article there??? I doubt it. Horrible website. And, I wouldn't say that simply out of partisanship. It is just really that bad. I know you guys are trying but, come on, you need more, many more contributors and visitors to that site to be taken seriously. I'll act as a complete non-partisan here and state simply, WOW THAT SITE SUCKS! That's all for now folks. For all you who haven't drunk their kool-aid, check it out. It is beyond foolish and pitiful.

08/26/07 2:01 am

Phil Haines

And I should also mention what a scumbag Phil Haines is. People wonder about taxes being so high. Gee. Well, this, the most shameless self-promoter in the history of NJ politics, spent almost $50,000 of Burlco taxpayers money (with his corny picture and name prominently displayed on the first page of course) to tell people what they already knew--there's a backlog in getting passports approved. What a scumbag. I hope ELEC nails him on this and about ten other clearly inappropriate things he's done over the course of this election. I've met him before and he is, without a doubt, the fakest, lamest guy out there and he has got to be one of the dimmest bulbs in terms of intelligence I have ever come across. I doubt he has the intelligence to run a local planning board appropriately let alone be a state senator. Phil Haines = unequivocally a scumbag who wastes taxpayer dollars for shamelss self promotion. I can't stand this guy for that and I hope that the powers that be in the Dem party hang him out to dry.

08/26/07 10:30 am

The poll results must be in

at Democratic HQ and they must be really bad for Bodine because that is the only reason you would wage such a desperate and personal attack on a candidate. I believe this was the same tactic used at GOP HQ when their poll results came back and they discovered that Riley is a worthier opponent than they thought; ergo the desperate letter from the Three Stooges, I mean, three Mayors, in Northern Burlington County.
So, how much IS Haines winning by, according to your poll?

08/26/07 10:34 am

Tisk tisk

Come on Ron. Calling someone a "scumbag"? This coming from the person who three posts earlier said " Let's have fun but in a mature way. That's all I ask. And yes, I've been guilty of posting stupid stuff before too, but I've apologized for that and won't do anymore of that."? Doesn't seem too "mature" to me.

08/26/07 10:35 am

By 50 points. Yeah right.

By 50 points. Yeah right. How would I know anything about polling? Doesn't it offend you that taxpayer dollars are being used to pay for his campaign?

08/26/07 10:37 am

Wasting taxpayer dollars is

Wasting taxpayer dollars is a scumbag thing to do. I don't know how else to describe it.  It's just more of the same corruption here in Burlco with the Republicans.

08/26/07 10:39 am

I guess it is do as I say, not as I do around here.

Ronald aka Dennison

Funny, first you call Diane Allen a "fat Pig" in your earlier posts a month ago because "politicsnj is not giving you, I mean Dennison enough press! Phil Haines will win at least 3-1, you calling him a scumbag only inflames voters to for FOR him. You do not seem to understand this man is popular and well loved. But I want to SEE YOUR STATS on how Haines is wasting taxpayer dollars. I know you are jumping on the idiot from Marlton, Chris Brown's bandwagon making that accusation. But I am sure Mr Haines will be sending him a thank you note for his victory! Bodine and Perr obvioulsy were desperate because they know Bodine has no prayer. Oh and remember, Phil was doing his job as clerk alerting people to information, he sends stuff out every year on information. Oh and by the way Ronald/Dennison, I did not start to read Red Jersey until Marty slammed it and accused me of posting on it. What is so sad is that you will lose against Diane, and Franny will be out of his job. But do you consider that there are many more people out there that post against the democrats?? But please Dennison, PLEASE PROVE FROM FACTS HOW HAINES HAS WASTED DOLLARS - AND HOW THE FREEHOLDERS DO TOO WITH THEIR MAILERS 3X A YEAR! Must be frustrating to run a losing campaign knowing you do not have a prayer!

More Cowbell Please !!

08/26/07 12:14 pm

Dennison IS LUVITZ

I think we all need to start Calling it as it plays, Rich Dennison is Ronald Luvitz. His style of posting is so transparent. It is a shame that a candidate can only troll websites and fight with posters who disagree with thim. Mr. Dennison, you sir are a freak and a fraud. I really do not think you understand what you post when you post it and your jumping off the walls everytime someone confronts you with facts shows your frustration. No other poster here freaks out the way you do. No other poster, as Mr OC says talks about being fair and nice, then turns around and starts bashing. Mr. Dennison, I do agree that it is very frustrating for you to realize you have already LOST THIS ELECTION! So, it makes sense that you would start slandering Clerk Haines only because you have nothing else to say. Thank you for giving me ammunition to send out to all my other democratic friends showing how pitiful the democratic candidate running for senate is!

08/26/07 12:42 pm

You are all delusional. I

You are all delusional. I doubt Dennison or any candidate for that matter even reads our comments. But I sure wish that Phil Haines did. You know my name and my face and I said I would introduce myself to any of you anonymous posters if I only knew who you were. Come clean. Who are you Gopgal? Who are you Pablo? It seems to me that you are the same person anyway. You rip Martin apart. I defend him. Now I talk about more Burlco Republican corruption and you go after me. I wrote before that we should be fair and nice to each other on here after you guys called Martin every name in the book. Calling candidates out for corrupt practices is always fair game.

08/26/07 1:43 pm

Gopgal & Pablo are the same person: Dawn Lacy

Now that is what's pathetic. I now fully agree with Martin that Gopgal is Dawn Lacy. Also it's obvious that Pablo and Gopgal are the same person because their writing styles are unmistakable. As an example both make a mistake hardly anyone else on here does in writing Democrat or Democratic with a small "d." For one of the heads of the Burlco Republicans to be posting on here is nutso pathetic. But I'll allow my challenge to still stand. Give me your real name and put a picture on here and show up to a public function like a debate. I'd be happy to introduce myself to quell your delusions.

08/26/07 2:16 pm

Scumbag

I agree - abusing ones office for personal gain is a scumbag thing to do.

That is why I am joining Ron in calling for Fran Bodine to resign his seat immediately. After all, collecting a State pension in the same system he is collecting a salary is a scumbag thing to do - Bodine basically stole $500,000 from taxpayers by abusing a loophole.

To make matters worse, Bodine is personally profiting from his pay-to-play antics in Evesham.

Yep a true scumbag. Lets all join Ron in his steps to root out corruption by calling for the resignation of Fran Bodine.

p.s. - The Clerks office is required by law to provide information on the new passport regulations. Why to prioritize your rants weirdo.

08/26/07 8:08 pm

Stopdem

Hey weirdo, reference the particular law you are referring to. I very strongly doubt it exists. If the federal government required such, it would have to provide the funds for such. Ask an attorney specializing in Constitutional Law. Plus, I think an advisory on the county website would've sufficed. If I had the time, I'd call around to counties all around the state to see how they handled this "mandate" you are referring to. I doubt any spent a whopping $50,000 to do so. This was wrong and politics at its worse. But that's the Burlco Republican Party for you. They'll never learn.

08/26/07 8:20 pm

Not Dawn

You know Rich, when you post stuff, please back it up. I would love for you to tell and prove that I am this Dawn Lacy. I am not even a female. So, unless you can prove your theories, you look stupid. And Horrors! I use small d's?? OMG call out the Marines! Ronald and Rich, I do not care what you call me or think I am anyone. The point is I am not running for public office, you are Sir, and your trolling these sites trying to point fingers at people just shows what a loser you are. I would love for you to prove it, but you cannot and that must really fry your little bananas more. However, you and Martin sound very similar like the same person too Rich.

08/26/07 8:26 pm

More Delusions

So you're not Gopgal and not Dawn Lacy. But I am Dennison and Martin. Either quit it with trying to read your crystal ball and say I'm this one or that one (next you'll be saying I'm Fran Bodine, Rick Perr or even Hillary Clinton) and also refer to me by my correct name (and it's Ronald, not Ron, by the way) or I'll disregard responding to you.  By the way, I still don't know your name or Gopgal's for that matter.  Nor have I seen a picture of either of you.  I can't do any better than use my real name and post my picture so that you know who I really am.  Martin has done the same.  You and Gopgal don't even want to touch that one, for obvious reasons, I suppose.

08/26/07 8:42 pm

How About

Its my personal choice? Very few people choose to do that and well, I choose not too. You can read into what you like, but that is my choice. Bottom line, Phil Haines just got handed his victory thanks to Bodine and that letter to the BCT. Phil is doing his job by sending out information. The Freeholders to the same thing. What is bugging you and the other dems is that he is doing something positive, rather what he was elected to do. By the way, It is the end of August, and has Dennison hit what, over 25,000 doors?? I mean he did 10,000 in one month, so wow, what is that number now?? lolol Sorry, I should not be making fun of a losing candidate, but it is still out there. Also, BTW no one on this entire site from what I have seen has ever knocked Blue Jersey or any other dem site the way you have Red Jersey. Lay off Ronald because it only makes you and Dennison look foolish. Oh Oh I forgot, I only post on this site too. I do not have time to blog all day, although it would be a nice job.

Let's just drop this crap. I

Let's just drop this crap. I may have started it with the Red Jersey bash but I just recently read some things on there that seemed low-brow, if that's the right way to describe it. Actually I think it's great there's a Red Jersey site and a Blue Jersey site. I do think though that Red Jersey's site has to go a very long way to catch up with the much more substantive Blue Jersey site. Concerning Phil Haines, I'm sorry, but I don't think you'll ever get me to agree that sending that brochure out at the very high cost of $50,000 was right and I think his motivations are clear. If you show me a law or some of regulation requiring him to do so, I'll retract my statement on that completely. I just really doubt such exists. Also, must his picture be on there? Ask any printer, putting a picture on a brochure increases the cost, perhaps significantly. Can't we all see through his antics? Maybe that makes him a good, even great, politician, but I see it as a corrupt use of taxpayer money. All I am is a Democrat who speaks out on issues of concern to me. I would never run for office myself. It just isn't my thing. But blogging about this stuff is enjoyable to me and I suppose I'll keep doing it as I encourage all of you guys to do as well. As you put it, Gopgal, there's nothing wrong with a little online jousting. Who knows if the powers that be even read this stuff. I suppose my only wish is that there were more solid Dems on here besides Martin and me! You Republicans out-number us on here for sure. And you know it!

you guys are funny

what i think is really screwed, is that if all of you compare notes on actual issues, you probably have some similar opinions...

say on tax reform ( not just property tax ) / illegal immigrants / dual office holding ( or multiple as the case may be ) / cutting the budget / and whole gambit of other issues plaguing the state...

instead you run around like 3rd graders calling each other names... lol... i love it...

Hey Ronald

How come there is no one named Ronald Luvitz registered to vote in New Jersey or Burlington County? You come on here all high and mighty, with your, I use my real name and picture, but when I looked your name up on the voter rolls, it wasn't there. There is no one named Luvitz registered to vote in New Jersey - let alone Burlington County.

Please, all knowing Ronald, tell us why you have a made up name and now have been caught as a fake?
