The race for Governor between incumbent Jon Corzine and Republican U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie remains a statistical dead heat, with Corzine leading Christie 42%-40% in a new Quinnipiac University poll for the 2009 race. In August, the race was also too close to call; Christie led Corzine, 41%-40%.
Half of the voters say that Corzine does not deserve to be re-elected; 25% of Demcorats say the same. Corzine has a 46%-42% favorable rating, while Christie is at 25%-7%. Two thirds of the voters say they dont know enough about the federal prosecutor to form an opinion.
"The hypothetical matchup between Gov. Jon Corzine and prosecutor Christopher Christie is still a dead heat, but at least this time the Governor is two points on the right side of the split," said Clay Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Corzine's job approval rating has slipped a couple of more points and Christie is leading among independent voters who often decide New Jersey elections."

Corzine Pathetic
Shoveling money into Hudson County... increasing taxes on everything we buy...Carla... 800% toll increases... increasing budget 20% then cutting it 1%... illegally raising tolls to pay for tunnel without making NY pay fair share... not fulfilling campaign promises to increase rebates 40%, not creating ELECTED state auditor... hiding documents from public... arrogance worse than Marie Antoinette... done zip on uninsured... what the hell has he accomplished?
Corzine will win.
He did not give his friend and former employer a multimillion dollar no bid contract.
Jim
Wow Jim is that all you can come up with. With such an exicting mind like yours, you must make Pemberton proud.
No to Christie
Haven't we moved beyond the politics of superficiality, and if so, what on earth is the rationale for supporting Chris Christie? What are his policy positions? We know that he loves the anti-Constitutional Patriot Act, but that's about it. Why is he using the office of U.S. attorney to further his political ambitions?
That Christie is even mentioned as a gubernatorial candidate reveals how some in the GOP conflate image with reality, from having a B-movie actor serve as president to recruiting a Law and Order attorney for president to having the Terminator become governor.
Martinone
I suppose the Dems deep bench of doubledippers, swindlers, has-beens offers so much more to the good people of New Jersey.
Christie has a record he can run on and accomplishments to speak of, a couple things the democrats are severely lacking.
We don't know his policy positions yet b/c he can not campaign while doing his job. Your own questions answer themselves.
He won't be the candidate anyhow.
A one issue candidate who supports abortion, gun control, illegal immigration and higher state income and sales taxes isn't going to win a Republican Primary in this state in 2009.
Remember, this is a guy who won only one election in his whole life, and then couldn't even win a primary for renomination.
If Lonegan runs, Christie won't even step into the ring. The last thing he wants is another humiliating defeat on top of his humiliating double digit Republican Primary losses in 1995 and 1997.
Mountiantop
Great insight - here is another "fact" for you: Lonegan will never win a statewide general election.
What BO was saying thirty years ago...
"Ronald Reagan will never win a general election."
Jon Corzine is New Jersey's Jimmy Carter.
Steve Lonegan is New Jersey's Ronald Reagan.
Oh Rick...
At least disclose, Mountaintop Shaftan, that you are a paid advisor to the Lonegan effort...guess that'll get him the support of all those North Arlington Democrats you work for.
Fairness, I think Lonegan is a brave and smart guy. But it's not about what I think, it's about what voters think. ANd if Shaftan's screed is the message and image that Steve Lenegan is gonna press, voters won't think he's anything more than an angrier, less handsome, less tolerant Bret Schundler.
Christie "The Reformer"
Technically, he is not a candidate. But, under the assumption that he does run for Gov., he brings something that NJ is in serious need of ... REFORM !! That is the key word these days, and from the way he is investigating and indicting the crooks of this state (mostly Dems you may accuse, well that is for two reasons: because we have mostly Dems in government here in NJ and the Dems we have are part of the long-standing traditions of NJ Dems: Self-dealing and double dipping). This state is dying because of taxes, criminal behavior in Government from top to bottom, and a socialistic approach to governance. We need a significant change now more than ever. We need to shrink the size of this enormous state government, make government more efficient, improve competence at every level of government, and significantly cut spending and taxes. When the people vote not to "invest" in stemcell research, yet Crozine steals money from one pocket in order to force taxpayer money into it anyway, what more of a slap in the face can we stand. This state government does not care about the people of this state, they care about their ideology and taking care of themselves. Businesses and citizens are leaving in droves because, like all good socialist (sorry, Democrat) governments, they do not understand that you are in competition for companies to set-up shop in your state, and HIRE YOUR CITIZENS. We need to focus on development (both infrastructure and the people)of Newark, Camden, and some of the other areas that have 80% of their residents on welfare (for the last 30+ years). We need to attract businesses, educate these low income areas (skill focused education based on the type of business you seek to attract) and pull our state out of the past, and into the future.
MartinOne: your mother said-think before speaking, didn't she?
Martin One: Please remember that the B Movie President had a few little accomplishments like turning the economy around after Jimmy Carter made it a complete disaster. He then was able to hand that off to Bush41, who did well (until the tax and spend Dems of congress back-doored him with tax hikes). The economy still grew into the Clinton years. Then Clinton cut the military by 52% and benefitted further by the short-term tech bubble. He took credit for the wonderful economy, and then handed-off an economy that had a surplus, but a negative GNP to Bush42. Reagan had a little foreign policy success too, like forcing the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Though I am not the biggest fan of that Law & Order actor, yours was a cheap shot (again) since he was not JUST an actor, but was elected to the Senate.
So, instead of your silly little snipes and quips based on your small-minded view of the world, how about contributing real ideas based on your own ability to think. It is not enough to just throw stones at those hated Republicans that your friends tell you are evil, mean, and stupid ... especially the ones that clutch at their guns and religion. How about using some historic facts and a fact-based approach to policy that is more complex than the Robin Hood economics most of the Dems want to employ (take from the wealthy to further subsidize the others....even though the top 25% of earners in this country pay 85% of the taxes....the lower 50% of earners pay 3% taxes - yet Obama wants to give them money back?).
Grow-up and think, not just yell from the sidelines.
From the mouths of babes
Ah, MotownRepub, it is hard to take your brand of "facts" and your rambling diatribe seriously with so many ad hominem attacks and non-sequiturs. Surely, you aren't going to argue that Clinton economics are inferior to the current president's? Nor will you be arguing, at least in good faith, that a tax cut that helps only 1% of the American population, while exacerbating the long term fiscal deficit, is somehow economically feasible.
The politics of superficiality are at play in your Party's reference for a flat-earth fundamentalist-cum-moose hunter who represents some female version of John Wayne as somehow being a viable vice presidential candidate. And this superficiality is at play in the choice of Chris Christie as the candidate du jour for governor 2009. No matter how many times you put "Reform" in all caps (not the best argumentative strategy, mind you), you still haven't come up with a viable argument to support Christie. You're smart, though, and you know that that is the case, whether you'll publically admit it or not.
Peel beneath the veneer of rank partisanship and Christie as the Reform Superman, and see what's below that layer: Using the U.S. Attorney's office for partisan gain, going after Democrats solely (hello, BurlCo and OceanCo GOP?), giving no-bid contracts to DOJ buddies, using the threat of subpoena for partisan purposes, giving the Republican Party 250k for one's appointment, more or less, and more. We are each meant to be critical thinkers of our respective parties and their choices; it's time you hitched a ride on that train.
