Voters to Corzine: if Obama offers you a job, take it!

If Barack Obama wins the presidency and offers Gov. Jon Corzine a post in his new administration, New Jerseyans want Corzine to take the job, according to a Zogby International poll released earlier today.

Among likely voters, 46% want Corzine to resign as Governor and join an Obama administration, while 33% say he should decline and stay on as Governor. Among Democrats, 45% say he should leave, and 36% want him to stay.

There has been considerable speculation in recent months that Corzine might be interested in a federal post, especially as he struggles to win the approval of New Jersey voters. Recent polls suggest Corzine could face a tough re-election challenge from Republican Christopher Christie, the United States Attorney. But Corzine has said he is not interested in returning to Washington, where he served in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2006.

If Corzine did resign, Senate President Richard Codey would become Governor. Codey served fourteen months as Governor after James E. McGreevey resigned in 2004.

After the 2000 election, Christine Todd Whitman resigned as Governor to join George W. Bush's cabinet.  A December 2000 Quinnipiac University poll showed that 60% of New Jerseyans thought she would be a good choice, while 30% did not. Whitman was completing her seventh year as Governor.

The Zogby poll was conducted for Garden State Equality.

Corzine

I hope he stays. Christie wont be as tough as everyone seems to think. He has big weaknesses, lets not forget his deal with the devil Norcross, his mega-Bush fundraising, his unremarkable stint in elected politics, his lack of name recognition (despite his frequent pat-on-the-back press conferences) and that NJ is blue blue blue. On a superficial note-and while it certainly doesnt mean he is unqualified-He is perhaps the only man that is less photogenic than Jon Corzine

So he can

foul up the entire country?!!! Just wonderful...

Only 46%?

This is is the only finding that rings somewhat true from this so-called poll! 5 posts on this, Wally? How slow is it today?Calling it the "second independent poll in seven days" is a bit of an insult to Qpac.

obama seems ok

what do we have against him that we'd wish corzine on him?

08/19/08 11:25 am

Huh?

Corzine & Nobama, perfect together! Even Nobama is smart enough to keep away from Corzine.

I just hope that such a incompetent, union owned, economically challenged, puppet Governor Corzine does not spawn a Whitman like Florio did.

If my dumb ass party does not unite around one conservative now, they will be manipulated into planting a "seed of Whitman." A guaranteed lose-lose situation for New Jersey and the coup de grace for the NJGOP.

Ten reasons Corzine will stay and be reelected

1. This is New Jersey.

2. He has cut spending. - no one else has done that!

3. He hasn't raised taxes.

4 He is a genuinely nice guy who wants to make the state work.

5. He made a good faith effort to get us out of the structural budget problem created by the Republicans.

6. The best candidate the republicans have (according to politickernj) is the ethicaly flawed federal prosecuter.

7. This is August and the election is fifteen months off.

8. There hasn't been a single idea from the republicans about how they could have done a better job.

9.Incumbents almost always win. (Even Florio came close)

10. He has a billion dollars to send on his reelection.

Corzine never cut spending

I don't know how you can say Jon cut spending ,that 600 million that was cut was from 550 million property tax rebates that got cut .Which was from that 1 cents sales tax increase ..so Corzine cut rebates not spending .Plus he borrowed 3.9 billion thats not cutting spending !

Sweet dreams.

Poor Jon is stuck in NJ.

Jim from Pemberton

What NJ are you living in?

08/19/08 4:00 pm

We know two things

1) Corzine can be beaten and 2) it won't be by Chris Christie.

Jim has to be on welfare or a government employee to think Corzine hasn't raised taxes.  Are there any taxes he HASN'T raised?

08/19/08 4:22 pm

Corzine beats Christie

I would vote for Jon Corzine again before I would vote for Christopher Christie.

Christie who bought his position, who's a major Bush supporter, and who constantly pats himself on the back for giving local officials 20months of prison.

Christie will drown, ask Hudson County.

08/19/08 4:45 pm

Corzine will leave

I like him and believe that he has his heart in the right place. But the guy just does not need all this aggravation! What morning is he going to wake up and say , " enough of this sh**!" Transportation funding is a no win situation , but it must be fixed. The Katz e-mail debacle seems like it will never end. Dealing wit hLegislators who think" politics first" all the time has to be draining. Not having a " feel" for the #1 rule that PERCEPTION IS REALITY has casued him quite a few problems. I just don't see him turning down Obama. Then the fun starts.............. Codey vs. Andrews? Codey vs. Sweeney? Codey vs. Norcross/ Adubato candidate? Codey vs. Nobody ( after he makes a LOT of deals to run unopposed).

Ten Reasons

are you kidding me that Corzine didn't raise taxes....The sales tax went from 6 to 7 percent and he extended it to other services. And Jon from Pemberton have your property taxes been cut? Please let me know and I will move into your town. Keep drinking the cool aid!

08/19/08 8:14 pm

Please go.

Nothing would be better for NJ if Corzine took a federal job. The only caveat is that should be a job where he couldn't do any damage. Maybe an Ambassadorship to Switzerland. He couldn't do us any harm there and he could hang out with all his financial cronies. What do you think?

Maybe he could take Carla with him.
