Poll: N.J. voters back offshore oil drilling

New Jerseyans say gasoline prices is the economic issue that worries them the most, and by a 64%-34% margin, state voters support offshore oil drilling, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. New Jersey voters also support new nuclear power plants (61%-32%) and drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuse (53%-41%).

After gasoline prices (28%), New Jerseyans cite health care (23%) and food prices (16%) as their top concerns.

“New Jersey voters may like their beaches, but they also like being able to fill the tank and drive to the beaches,” said Clary Richards, the Associate Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Insitute. “If Obama is going to continue his opposition to offshore drilling, he’ll have to convince voters it won’t help bring down the price of gas.”

So McCain and Zimmer

have an issue to try to help them win NJ. More drilling and nuclear power.

Too bad they're on the wrong side

Maybe it's time for these two to join the rest of the country and support drilling in ANWR.

So how does Jon "The King" Corzine Justify this???

On August 5th of this year while on WOR radio in New York Governor Corzine said the following... The potential payoff is too low to warrant oil exploration off the coast” of New Jersey. Little does Governor Corzine realize that lifting the ban on offshore drilling would bring immediate relief to the taxpayers of New Jersey at the gas pump as well as in the coming winter months when everyone needs to heat their homes. offshore oil drilling which if expanded, could send an immediate sign to the oil commodities markets that additional supply of oil will soon be available which would then provide for an immediate drop in oil prices. Proof of this was the executive order on offshore oil drilling which was recently lifted by President Bush. The lifting of this ban is largely a symbolic move since there is also a federal law banning offshore drilling. However once President Bush Lifted the offshore drilling ban, crude oil dropped over $6.00 a barrel. This immediate price drop has also translated into an 11 cents per gallon price reduction at the pump for Americans. Does this poll showing the residents of New Jersey are for off shore drilling now mean anything to Corzine? Governor Corzine should realize the “Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY)” attitude which he and the other environmental extremists have been pushing as their agenda for many years is something of the past. All Americans want to reduce our dependence on foreign oil now. We can accomplish this as part of a multi pronged approach which would include solar, wind, bio-fuel and off shore drilling. I guess when you have made the million he has on Wall Street and when you are driven around at the expense of the taxpayers of New Jersey then you have no idea what each of us the citizens of New Jersey are paying out of our pockets daily in fuel and energy costs. Obviously this is just another example of Jon “The King” Corzine being out of touch with us the taxpayers of New Jersey.

08/13/08 9:11 am

If NJ Voters

support all these efforts why aren't they supporting McCain?

08/13/08 9:18 am

Of course Corzine is against it

Of course our Governor is against off-shore drilling. He's shown a flagrant disregard of the wishes of the residents of New Jersey. We want goverment waste and spending cut he does nothing. We want property tax relief he does nothing. He proposes toll increases and financial gimmicks we don't want. He has "super secret" plans. We want open government.

His being against one more thing we want is no surprise.

I just hope the people of this State throw him out on November 3, 2009.

This Is A Scam.....

....big oil spends millions of dollars in lobbyist fees and PR to con Americans into believing that raping our coastal waters will have any short term effects on the price of oil or of gasoline.

Sadly people buy the lies, and the propaganda has an effect.

But that doesn't change the fact that these measures are pure unadulterated bullshit and anyone who is actually informed knows it.

The way to lower oil prices has been demonstrated in the past months and that is to USE LESS OF IT!!!

We can conserve our way out of this mess as we develop the technologies required to totally eliminate any need for Middle Eastern oil, the for foreign oil and finally for any domestic oil.

The oil companies are only concerned about short term profits and keeping up the impression that supply is in danger....and John McCain is using their BS to terrify Americans into supporting him.....and even some Democrats are being intimidated by these big lies.

Sadly, if we don't see through the lies, it's the ordinary people who will continue to be shafted in the end.

>>>>>>>That offshore drilling snake oil
Tuesday, August 05, 2008

A key to understanding the language of politics in this country is credulity -- a two-bit term for willingness to believe the damnedest nonsense with no supporting evidence as long as it appeals to one's abiding prejudice or unquenchable avarice.

Lots of Florida real estate under a foot of water was sold in years past to lots of credulous out-of-staters who believed they were getting in on a steal. (Actually, they were, but not the steal they had in mind.) More recently, some of our best bankers actually believed they could make money by giving mortgages to folks with less credit than a guy living in a cardboard box in the Bowery. And we all know some dodo today who believes Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Now we have a new winner in the credulity sweepstakes -- the belief that offshore oil drilling is a sure cure for obscene gasoline prices. It's more evidence of the power of panic to push office seekers into lousy public policy decisions, not to mention more evidence of the triumph of hope over experience.

<<<<

The evidence is overwhelming, drilling offshore as a way of having any immediate effects is a big lie...

http://www.nrdc.org/energy/drillingtf.asp?gclid=COza5smIi5UCFQObFQod5SVs...

>>>>>>>>>>>Drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and on the Outer Continental Shelf could help lower gas prices quickly.
FALSE
It would take almost a decade before significant oil production could occur in either place, and even then it would have a marginal impact. Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, for example, would only shave 4 cents off a gallon of gas by 2026, or $23 per year for the average driver, assuming that other conditions affecting gas prices remain the same. And that's at maximum benefit! Likewise, it would take many years for the oil from new offshore wells to go into production, and even at peak, the additional supply wouldn't reduce energy prices significantly. These numbers are all according to the U.S. government's own estimates. A June 2008 Congressional report makes it clear: "The argument that more drilling means lower gasoline prices ... there is simply no correlation between the two."
America could have plenty of oil and stop importing so much fuel from foreign countries if we were allowed to drill for it in our own backyards.
FALSE
Americans burn through 20 million barrels of oil a day -- accounting for 25 percent of the world's total consumption -- but government estimates show that we only have 2 percent of the world's oil reserves. As an example of how little difference drilling would make, say that we did open the Arctic Refuge for exploitation. It would take an estimated 50 years to drain the whole thing dry. During that time, the oil fields would likely produce less fuel than what our country now consumes in just six months. With so little of the world's oil supply and such high demand, even if we allowed drilling everywhere that the oil companies want to -- from the Arctic refuge to the American West to protected offshore areas -- there's still no way we could quench America's thirst for oil. We must embrace other solutions.
If we can't get the oil we need out of the Arctic Refuge, there's no good reason not to look for it offshore, as President Bush is urging.
FALSE
Congress first banned drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf in 1982, and for good reason: Offshore drilling is an enormously wasteful and dangerous means of energy production. Between 1981 and 2005, 187 large oil spills on the continental shelf dumped more than 2,100 gallons each into the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes Rita and Katrina alone resulted in 125 spills, totaling 685,000 gallons. Offshore drilling is also associated with air pollution and land degradation, and with seismic activity that has been shown to have profound, even fatal, effects on marine mammals. The ban was affirmed by executive orders signed by the first President Bush in 1990 and extended by President Clinton in 1998. Even the current President Bush supported the ban until the summer of 2008, when soaring gas prices exposed the failure of his oil-centric energy policy.<<<<<<<<<<

Lento class a nutjob

Big Oil ? you mean Hugo Chavez or the Saudis ?. since when are you an oil expert ? Alaska's Gov knows more about oil and drilling than you know about fornicating. Enough already with the massive transfer of cash to our enemies Our cars dont run on Ben & Jerrys Ice cream or hot air from so called windfall profits tax. They still run on oil. Joe and Jane Americans gets it. Its there its ours, lets get it , lets use it and lets save the rest of our jobs

Broy, Did You Read Any Of What I Quoted???

I don't pretend to be an expert; but I do understand English.

The FACTS are out there.  McCain's "plan" to reduce the cost of gasoline today by drilling offshore in 7 to 10 years is pure BS.

Now go up and read the authoritative sources quoted and then come back and explain how McCain's idea makes any sense at all in the short term or in the larger context.

Meanwhile, Americans are cutting back on their use of gasoline, buying smaller cars...and the prices are ALREADY dropping.

We don't need any oil from Chavez or the Saudies in the long run.  It's a kind of drug addiction we can kick.

Hell even a staunch Republican capitalist like T. Boone Pickens gets it!!!   We need to begin implementing some radical changes and new ideas if we're ever going to become free of the addiction to imported oil.

Oh, and by the way, labeling those you disagree with as "crazy" is not a winning argument.  On the contrary, it exposes you as being....shall we say, less than intelligent, at best.

Marvelous idea.

Nothing would benefit New Jersey's local economy like a nice big Exxon oil slick running the entire length of the Jersey Shore.

Strong Public Opinion All A Big Fat Lie -- Lento

Oil Drilling "Truffer" Nick Lento Calls Public Buyers of Lies, and Uninformed

Trenton, 08/13 -- In a erruptive fit of pique earlier today, regular Politickernj opiner, Nick Lento suddenly and without warning, lashed out at roughly two thirds of the New Jersey public, calling them variously uninformed, buyers of lies, and believers of big oil lobbying propaganda & PR ("BOLPAPR") which he alleged had been used to systematically poison public opinion.

He not only specifically called the vast majority of the New Jersey public "buyers of lies," but he also alleged that John McCain had "terrorized" the public into supporting him.  He gave no details, except to point out that everyone knows someone who thinks Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Nor did he elaborate on exactly what specific instances of BOLAPR spreading had so deeply poisoned public opinion, but he formulated what he said was a sure-fire way to reduce oil prices -- USE LESS OF IT. Asked how a typical commuter with a fixed driving distance could "use less," or a family could use less heating oil, especially if there is a cold winter, he did not have any immediate answer.

But it did not stop him from pointing out his expertise on the subject. "Contrary to what most of the obvious dolts out there think they know, I, Nicholas Lento, am one of those few who is actually informed," he confidently chirped.

As proof, he cited endless and hastily-posted paragraphs of questionable leftie-liberatard propaganda from the usual suspects (e.g., a general reference to a June 2008 Congressional report).

He was also asked if he viewed public employees and senior citizens as part of that uninformed and lie-buying majority cabal that he views with such contempt, given the fact that they all have oil and energy company stocks as important parts of the portfolios of their pension systems, and mutual fund investments.

"Absolutely! There are no exceptions when it comes to ignorance!" Lento shot back.

LOL!!! Trochilus: That Was Funny!!!

You are a good writer of amusing fiction and I appreciate your technique.

But let's face it; all one has to do to put the lie all your silly, but amusing, collection of distortion and mischaracterization is to say, go up and actually read what I write.

If you really want to engage in intelligent informed debate feel free to accurately quote me in context and say where you disagree and why.

If you think any of the material I quoted or referred to was wrong; quote it and tell us why.

As for what the polls show; I somehow doubt you really think the mere fact that alot of people believe something means that it's objectively true. I don't think you're that stupid.

On the other hand, I do thank you for a few chuckles! You should consider the field of comedy writing!

I bet Rush Limbaugh could use your talents! You two would be "perfect" together! :-)

By The Way; Here's More Proof Positive That Republicans....

....in Alaska are corrupt whores of big oil.

It's a thirty minute video with actual FBI TAPES of these corrupt scumbags in action.

http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/347/index.html

And here's another great article on the subject of John McCain and the kinds of corruption that Senator Stevens has been involved with...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/julian-e-zelizer/senator-ted-stevens-and-j...

>>>>>>>Senator John McCain faces a two-face problem in this campaign for the presidency. The indictment of Senator Ted Stevens just added to this problem. Stevens, the senior senator from Alaska, was indicted for failing to disclose substantial gifts from powerful corporate interests in his state.

McCain has been struggling to tap into the "good" face of the conservative tradition. He desperately wants to remind disenchanted conservatives of the legacy of individuals such as Senator Barry Goldwater, President Ronald Reagan, and Speaker Newt Gingrich. These men advocated and promoted a robust set of ideas for the GOP and were committed to challenging liberal Democrats by offering Americans a contrasting world view. Whether one liked or hated them, these Republicans built a conservative movement around arguments about taking an aggressive stand against totalitarianism, the superiority of private markets over government, and the centrality of individual liberty.

Then there is the other side to the face of conservatism, the one whose lineage includes President Richard Nixon and, most recently, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay. This is a very different image of the Republican Party, one that has caused almost as much anger with conservatives as with liberals.

This side of the Republican face symbolizes a conservatism that has become corrupt with power. The Nixon-DeLay side didn't really oppose big government, but rather wanted to control government, expand it, and use it for their own political purposes and self interest. The uglier side of conservatism has produced a cottage industry of books by the right lamenting the decline of their movement. <<<<<<<<<<<<
