CWA Local 1034 President Carla KatzThe Executive Board of CWA Local 1034 -- which represents more than half of the state government employees -- has denounced leaders of five other CWA locals for their attacks on union leader Carla Katz. In a memorandum to Hetty Rosenstein (Local 1037), Jim Marketti (Local 1032), Carolyn Wade (Local 1040), John Rose (Local 1031) and Tom Palermo (Local 1039), the 1034 board calls their attacks on Katz “reprehensible and urges a no vote on the state contract.
We can no longer stay silent as you continue to personally attack Local 1034 and our President Carla Katz. In your actions and words, you shamefully and purposely tear down the great union that we have worked hard to build. We strongly stand beside Carla in her leadership of Local 1034 and your attacks on her are attacks on us. We voted unanimously to oppose this bad deal, which we know our members do not want. Our opposition to this contract is not an attempt to “look tough as you arrogantly and wrongly claim. We are actively urging our members to vote ‘NO’ because the current contract fails to protect healthcare and retirement security, and it doesn’t begin to address the many critical issues we face on the job. We firmly believe that we deserve equality with the teachers’ union on healthcare benefits.
Your unwarranted personal attack on President Carla Katz is reprehensible and contrary to the spirit of democracy, tolerance and respect for human dignity inherent in unionism. We, and our democratic union, have always supported the right of our members and leaders to disagree on substance and policy. That right to disagree is key to our strength. However, your behavior and actions undermine that right and damage our entire union. The vitriolic nature of your attacks raises questions in many of our minds as to what motivation YOU have to accept, and urge your members to accept, a contract that is so inferior to the tentative agreement made by the teachers.
What motivates you to accept a contract that does not ensure that the state repay the money it owes to keep our pension sound? What motivates you to support a deal that takes away free healthcare for not only active members but for future retirees? Why would you tell your members to support a contract that leaves the cost of health insurance for employees and future retirees vulnerable to increases in each new contract, and imposes a new health care plan without real detail? What would possess you to support a contract that creates a two-tier system of benefits, so that workers working side-by-side doing the same job are compensated differently? Why are you promoting a deal that imposes conditions on local and judicial employees, including concessions on healthcare and pensions, who will not have the opportunity to vote on these changes? And finally, why did you accept this offer so quickly, in order to make the Governor's artificial deadline of having an agreement before his budget address, and not bargain until the real deadline of June 30, 2007?
It seems to us that you have resorted to the personal smear tactics against Carla and the scare tactics of the unwarranted strike language on the ballot because you may now realize what a bad deal you made at the members' expense and really cannot defend it rationally to your members. Or, perhaps you had reasons for accepting the deal that you do not feel comfortable revealing to the members and the public.
We are proud to have Carla’s leadership during this fight. Carla’s record of winning wage and benefit improvements over the past 25 years speaks for itself, and her commitment is evident once again in the current contract battle. Her commitment to all of our members in the state workforce and among local governments, the judiciary, and the healthcare and private sectors is unparalleled. Carla has served as union president with dignity, integrity and excellence. You, on the other hand, are doing the members and this great union an extraordinary disservice.

Facts or Shut Up!
Stop already with the innuendo and rumor! It is now time for facts. Wade and those other 4 CWA Presidents who have accused Katz and Corzine of backroom discussions pertaining to the agreement MUST now prove those allegations. I am sick of their personal attacks without giving proof. It is time for them to tell all of us " when and where" these contacts occured. They must turn over all of their information to the proper authorites and not just to the newspapers. If they can't then they should publicly apologize to both Corzine and Katz and then resign their leadership positions for lying to their members. As far as the money that was given to Katz , if this was illegal then the AG's Office should investigate. If it was unethical then let someone prove how ethics rules were broken. Otherwise this is all just the worst form of character bashing. BUT SOMEONE HAS TO START PROVIDING FACTS AND DEMAND FORMAL INVESTIGATIONS
Sleepy Time Gal
Karla slept through past negotiations and slept with the future Gov. before this one ever got going. Gimme a break. A million bucks of gifts can easy any public scrutiny. Only problem is what is she so afraid off if everything is on the up and up? Come on Karla, inquiring union members want to know, are we being sold out before hand or are you really looking out for us?
No one can accept a $470K
No one can accept a $470K "loan" from the person who negotiates the union contract, and be seen as honest. No one can buy a $1 million dollar condo on a $100K salary, and be seen as honest. On top of that, Carla's opponent for the union presidency was kicked off the ballot, to prevent the union members from voting her out - which they would have. Her reputation is entirely her fault.
The Truth is a Defense
This conflict is really ridiculous. The locals have the same overarching interests and are tearing each other apart over rumors that have never been substantiated. If the four other presidents have genuine evidence, they should put it forward so that its credibility can be judged. Defamation of the sort that's going currently just keeps good people from getting involved in public service in this state. Insiders need to start drawing more ethical lines fo themselves. We all know unions are declining. They are the single most important vehicle for preserving the middle class in New Jersey, and this sort of thing is not helping their cause no matter how you look at it.
Labor Pains
Union membership is at 12.9% nationally and dropping fast thanks to union bosses like our gal Carla. And even more sadly, Carla is not an anomaly; union leaders sell out their members nationally on a daily basis. Elites like Carla identify much more with “The Boss then to the rabble they derisively call “ the herd. CWA gets millions of dollars from members and non-members alike for representation, but all the dues payors get is a lousy contract and fat cat bosses feathering their own nests. No wonder more and more workers just say no to unions (if only they could in NJ). With friends like Carla, labor doesn’t need enemies.
Katz is not Corzine's
Katz is not Corzine's girlfriend. Corzine bribed a Union leader by paying off her mortgage.
When the story broke, Corzine covered it up by saying he was helping his "girlfriend".
Carla Katz
Carla Katz's behavior only helps those looking for reasons to trash Unions. In light of her relationship to the Govenor and to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest she should have taken a low profile during this time and kept her participation in the backgound. But apparently her financial greed is exceeded only by her neurotic need to see her name in the paper. If the Local 1034 Executive Board has a problem with the "personalizing" of this contract fight they should look to their President who has done EVERYTHING possible to draw attention to herself by spending millions of dollars she had no way of earning and opposing a decent contract negotiated in a tough economic and political climate.
Karla Katz
I am a steward in local 1034, Karla's local. At first members supported her and believed that she worked hard for them. Everyone felt that her personal life was nobody's business. But, she told everyone that the relationship with the governor was over and the gifts were over too. Now it is obvious to everyone that she has been taking gifts, big gifts, all along. She bought a million plus condo, rented a large house and is putting a nearly million dollar addition on her home. She did this all inside of 3 months while negotiating the contract. She refuses to answer any questions or explain herself. She goes to school full time. When does she work as our local president? Since she and the governor refuse to explain when she got the money, we have to assume she got it recently. If she got it in 2004 no one would have anything to say. Their silence tells the whole story. You can't take gifts from the boss. How can you negotiate a contract while you personally have millions of the bosses money. She violated the cwa constitution. she broke the rules. She let down the members who have stood by her through all of this. Some members think she will get a better contract because of her relationship with the governor. Some think this is all just an act to make it look like she is against him. Some think the contract is bad because she gave away the store to him. Most of us just think she is a liar that let down all the members who supported her. They think it doesn't matter much to her now - she is a multi millioniare about to get a bought-and-paid-for law degree. She had a "close personal relationship with the governor" but she screwed the members. Now what?
