Corzine hurt in car accident

Gov. Jon Corzine was injured this evening in a two-car accident on the Garden State Parkway, the Trentonian is reporting.

The accident occured at approximately 6 p.m. near milemarker 43.5 in Galloway Township.

A spokesperson for the governor said Corzine's injuries are not life-threatening. A Corzine staffer says he has a broken femur.

A state trooper was reportedly hurt in the crash, but no further details are available.

The governor has been admitted to Camden's Cooper Hospital, according to news reports.

This is not a joking matter, and PoliticsNJ.com respectfully requests our readers to act appropriately.

While the Gov. is in surgery Codey will be "ACTING" governor again. Uh-Oh!

i think Democrats and Republicans give nothing but their hopes and prayers for a quick recovery for the Governor.

prayers with him

this really isn't an issue to joke about. we don't even know right now how he's doing. let's all up it on the maturity scale, please.

Hope he is ok

Wow, a broken femur is no fun. What happened exactly? I'd like to think that our governor of all people is driven appropriately. I hope speed wasn't involved. The roads are very slick.

Agressive Hit and Run Bronco SUV Driver....

...seems to be the story so far.

A broken femur and head injury is serious stuff.

This is a time to put any political wisecracks aside and pray for a speedy recovery for Jon Corzine, the State Trooper and the driver of the second vehicle.

Agressive SUV Driver....hmmm, now why isn't that surprising?

My hopeful prediction: the culprit will be nailed within "24 Hours".

Get well, Governor

This accident looked terrible on television, and I hope that all involved completely recuperate from this unfortunate event. The governor is probably in surgery right now at Cooper Medical Center. My thoughts and good wishes go out to him and the trooper who was injured in the accident.

Governor in "critical but stable" condition, according to Cooper doctor. No head injury, but rib fractures.

Third Elected Governor In a Row

I don't think Mr. Democrat was making a joke; I read that as a sardonic comment in anticipation of the obvious temptation of some.

Interestingly, however, this is the third elected Governor in a row who has suffered a broken leg while in office.

Christie Whitman broke her leg (not the femur) while skiing -- in Davos, I think. It happened in late January or very early February of 1999.

In addition to Corzine's broken left leg (femur), it was reported on NBC the head of trauma at Cooper that the Governor also has multiple rib fractures, but no head injury as was earlier speculated.

A source told ABC said the Governor does not like to wear a seatbelt, suggesting he may not have been wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Both of the Governor's legs were reportedly sticking outside the window when help arrived, and the Governor was yelling, "My leg, my leg." That too suggests he may not have been wearing a belt.

Been there, on state business, and an "R" says "God speed"

Games aside, we all try to promote what we believe in, I broke an arm in a car crash in '02 on the way to the State House. No fun. I will fight only those who can fight back.

Here's an account from the NY Times of Governor Whitman's broken leg.

Corzine's Accident

I am writing as a Member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. Governor Jon Corzine moderated a session on Economics this afternoon at our Annual Conference in Atlantic City. As usual, he was a gentleman and spoke openly with hundreds of mayors from around New Jersey. Shortly after this session the Governor was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. I am outraged by the tone of the some of the comments posted to this site. This is a time for prayer and good wishes for our Governor. Sincerely, Mayor Chuck Chiarello, Buena Vista Township, Atlantic County, NJ.

Was Timing A Factor?

Report updates indicate the Governor suffered six broken ribs, a broken sternum, a broken collar bone, and one fractured vertebra, in addition to the fractured left leg, and lacerations to the face, but no head trauma.

The accident occurred right around mile marker 43 on the New Jersey Parkway.

According to reports, they were trying to make a 7 pm meeting with the Rutgers Womens' Basketball Team and Don Imus, which the Governor had arranged.

The Exit for I-195 is Exit 98, or approximately 55 miles up the Parkway from where tha accident occurred a little after 6 pm.

From that Exit, crossing the state to I-295 is at least another 35 to 38 miles or so.

And, from there up to Princeton, probably going up Princeton Pike, would have added another 10 or 12 miles.

In other words, the trooper was trying to get the Governor to Drumthwacket for a 7 pm meeting, in just under an hour.

Do the math. It looks like they were trying to go 90 to 95 miles in an hour.

Rushing to Pander !!!

Corzine rushing to pander at the altar of Al Sharpton is a gross misuse of NJ Taxpayer assets. Imus is an Idiot and Al Sharpton should be in Jail. ( Freddys, Crown Heights riots, Jankel Rosenbaums death, Pagonis affair et al)

04/13/07 6:20 am

Lt Governor

Hmmm. Still no Lt. Governor in this state. This is just another reason why we need one. NJ was very close to having another non-elected governor. Once again the NJ legislature is very, very slow to act. Or should I say react. when was the last time they were proactive?

04/13/07 8:52 am

Man, these comments are awful

the guy could have died...geeze...

04/13/07 9:00 am

exactly the point

That is exactly the point. He could have, and almost did, die. If he did we would be stuck with another governor that we did not elect. This is reality and nobody is doing anything about it.

04/13/07 9:11 am

sorry for my first comment

to be clear, my initial comment wasn't to make light of the Governor's injuries...I was just pointing out how our last 2 elected governors both broke their legs in the Atlantic City area.

Like everyone else, I wish him a speedy recovery.

SUV Saved his Life

Thank goodness he was in an SUV or he would have been killed.

04/13/07 9:31 am

mr global warming

Shouldn't Mr. Global Warming have been in a Prius?

04/13/07 10:27 am

A speedy recovery

I wish our Governor the speediest of recoveries. I hope his injuries do not keep him out of work for a long period of time. But I am concerned about reports that he was not wearing his seat belt. Shouldn't he know better? But whether or not he was, I am sincere in my hopes that he makes a full recovery. And whoever was the driver of the hit and run car, I hope he or she is caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - and that if it is a he, the individual does not try to pawn it off on his female driving companion.

04/13/07 10:42 am

The comments

First off, some of the comments here are outrageously inappropriate. Now is the time for all of us to pray for the Governor's speedy recovery. However, I will note in response to Mr. Jackson's comment that per the constitutional amendment approved by the voters in the 2005 general election, there will be a lieutenant governor in NJ after the 2009 elections.

04/13/07 10:42 am

Gallows humor

I don't have a problem with gallows humor like the Golan Cipel thing, because that is the way a lot of folks deal with being uncomfortable. But the partisan slaps like Global Warming and the Lt. Gov stuff is out of line.

Glad the Governor is doing better, but with two surgeries to go we still have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.

04/13/07 11:19 am

Best Wishes

No matter how political philosophies differ, once a life is in danger it all goes out the window. I wish Governor Corzine the best and hope he has a speedy recovery.

I look forward to butting heads with him in the future.;-)

04/13/07 11:19 am

Get well Governor

Governor Corzine I wish you a speedy recovery, myself and my family will keep you in our prayers.

04/13/07 11:33 am

responsibility

My point was the Gov has a responsibility to the people of NJ. Just like a parent has a responsibility to their children. Having a succession plan that takes effect 3 years from now and not wearing a seatbelt is irresponsible. The individuals in the car who wore their seatbelts do not have the severity of injuries that the Governor has. The Prius comment was out of line. Sorry. I do wish the Governor well and hope he has a speedy and full recovery.
