Christie challenges citizens to help him fight political corruption

MIDDLETOWN - U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie identified corruption as the top issue facing the state during a town meeting with three Republican legislators in Monmouth County last night and called on people to join him in the fight for better government by attending government meetings and voting in elections.

But the former Morris County Freeholder and fundraiser for President George W. Bush's 2000 campaign says that his town meeting tour -- he held another one recently with State Senator Peter Inverso and Assemblyman Bill Baroni -- is unlrelated to speculation that he might seek the Republican nomination for Governor in 2009.

"It's a fair question," Christie said when asked if he's running. "The answer is 'no.'"

Instead, the corruption-busting federal prosecutor said that popular disengagement has resulted in the takeover by powerful and moneyed interests of the “gift of democracy,

“Political corruption is an attack on our way of life, on the idea that we the people can self-govern, said Christie. “The entire concept of a civilized society is under threat by what is going on in New Jersey."

Christie spoke before a nearly-packed auditorium at Middletown High School North at an event hosted by State Sen. Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr., Assemblywoman Amy Handlin and Assemblyman Samuel Thompson.

Asked if his appearance with the three GOP legislators up for election this year could be construed as a signal that Kyrillos, Handlin and Thompson are uninvolved in the current probe of state legislators receiving personal financial gain through state budget items, Christie said he would not comment on any investigations, as a matter of policy. Three State Senators, the Assemblyman and a U.S. Congressman -- all Democrats -- have been subpoenaed in recent weeks.

“New Jerseyans are frustrated and far too often we read in the newspapers about gang violence, public corruption or other crimes. We wanted to provide a forum to interact with the U.S. Attorney and to hear what he is doing to restore pride to this great state, said Kyrillos, the former Republican State Chairman.

Christie received a standing ovation here in the county where he secured sentences for numerous corrupt local elected officials from both parties -- where his war on corruption even ended the political career of Harry J. Larrison, a Freeholder for decades and one of the county's most beloved politicians.

He bemoaned the effect of jailed or otherwise chastised politicians on the overall morale and health of the voting public.

“The song of cynicism should be the state song, he said, as larger numbers of people succumb to the notion that all politicians are crooked, so why bother?
When Gov. Jim Florio ran for re-election in 1993, 69% of New Jersey’s registered voters participated in the election, Christie said.

“Twelve years later, in an election in which the two candidates -- Jon Corzine and Doug Forrester -- spent $80 million, or more than the last few contests combined, 46 percent of the registered voters voted, said Christie. “That’s a 23% decline.

Assessing the overall criminal element in New Jersey, Christie said organized crime is fairly well under control. Political corruption is rampant. And gang-related crime is on the rise. In 2000, Christie said a survey identified 7,000 gang members in New Jersey. In 2005, that number had risen to 17,500.

“That number has continued to grow exponentially, said Christie. “There is an army in our state, which is selling drugs and killing our people all for profit and personal aggrandizement.

The way people can fight gangs, said Christie, is the same way they must fight political corruption. They need to get engaged in the body politic.

At this point, voters no longer have the luxury of disengagement, Christie said. They cannot expect a U.S. Attorney, 16 lawyers and 24 FBI agents to police 566 municipalities, 21 counties, 612 school boards and a state budget totaling $33 billion.

“We cannot do it, said Christie. “We cannot physically do it. The people who are going to fix the problem of corruption in the State of New Jersey are sitting in this room tonight."

Christie noted that laws against bribery go back 170 years.

"Everyone knows taking an envelope of cash in exchange for public favors is illegal. Laws are not going to completely change human behavior," he said. "Change will occur as we get back involved with our government.

As Kyrillos escorted Christie toward the exit after the U.S. Attorney fielded some questions from the audience, Christie was asked how he would define politics.

“Politics is the process by which we solve society’s problems, he said. “We no longer tell our children that politics is a noble calling. Who do we expect to run this place one day if we give them such a negative view? Politics is not simply power – it is the process, and he said it a second time, “by which we have to solve society’s problems.

Well, As Long As He Said It

But the former Morris County Freeholder and fundraiser for President George W. Bush's 2000 campaign says that his town meeting tour -- he held another one recently with State Senator Peter Inverso and Assemblyman Bill Baroni -- is unlrelated to speculation that he might seek the Republican nomination for Governor in 2009.

"It's a fair question," Christie said when asked if he's running. "The answer is 'no.'"

Well, as long as he says that he's not trying to raise his profile and get people who attend events sponsored by Republican legislators to support his mission and political goals, then we'll just have to believe him.

Because it's not like he's been sued for libel before and settled the case -- except for libel his opponents in his first Freeholder run.

And how did he do it? By accusing them of being under investigation when they weren't, and he knew the weren't.

But, we shouldn't assume he's interested in the political impact of his actions just because he has a record of being a highly partisan Republican, has misused information about investigations in his own campaigns, is reputed to be the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for Governor, and is doing a town meeting tour all over the state rallying the troops.

If this is all the liberals have God bless them. There is no sane and logical argument for no show jobs and corruption.

why not fight corruption

Are the attacks on Christie supposed to justify the corruption and theft undertaken by our legislators?

04/27/07 9:15 am

politics from Mr. Christie

I notice that he's holding his town hall meetings in Monmouth and Mercer counties....two counties w/ toss-up legislative races.

I wish that was a coincidence.

Whatever happened to the

Whatever happened to the investigation of Bob Menendez? How timely that one was....This guy is a hack. The republicans can run whoever they want, they will not win, so I will sleep right through the election.

04/27/07 10:32 am

Re: Whatever happened to the

Assemblyman Thompson actually addressed that question as well, and Christie said he could not confirm or deny that anyone was the target of a federal indictment. He said his work needs to be done "quietly" and "in secret."

What ever happened to Jim

What ever happened to Jim "Machiavelli" Mcgreevey? Why did that bribery case drop? Once he resigns the problem goes away so one can assume that all the witch hunts are political and not in the spirit of justice. The people need to know that all people are equal under the law and that the Ruling Class, if anything should be judged more harshly not less. Republican Conscience

Straw man alert!

Gee, Humbleservant, talking about Chris Christie is "all the liberals have"! Oh, that and the legislature, governor's office, both US Senate seats and the majority of our House Delegation.

And when did I defend no-show jobs or corruption? I think you will find the answer is, "never." It's just another fantasy cooked up in your head, presented like a straw man for you to knock down.

Christie has done a good job with corruption, but that doesn't mean he isn't using his position for personal gain, too. There are plenty of examples of "tough" prosecutors who have been brought down. There was Nick Bissell from Somerset County back in the 1990s. And that idiot who condemned the Duke Lacrosse team.

Christie's office is doing a good job getting corrupt pols off the public dole, and that's a damn good thing. But that doesn't mean that Christie is a saint and deserves to be given a pass.

Character Assassination

Any and all opposition to a left wing agenda gets attacked and maligned, much like the government organized mobs in Cuba that have shouted down any protests of the Castro Regime for 48 years.

Liberals want freedom for themselves and for their agenda and nobody else. If someone like Chris Christie starts picking them apart, his character and credibility are immediately assassinated.

If liberals ever get control of this country and do to it what they've done to New Jersey we are in serious trouble.

Start with Union City Schools and Brian Stack

where admins have to kick back substantial sums to get an admin job and non-tenured teachers are coerced into buying tickets to Democratic political dinners at $250 a pop.

04/27/07 12:30 pm

Very True!

I think it's safe to say that Stack has Union City's Cafeteria monitor vote locked up which is great for him since there are more school cafeteria monitors in Union City than there are Police Officers.

Correction needed

The article incorrectly states "where his war on corruption even ended the political career of Harry J. Larrison, a Freeholder for decades and one of the county's most beloved politicians." Harry Larrison retired and sought not to seek re-election due to medical problems (cancer) before he was charged .... and he unfortunately passed away before the case moved forward. There is this concept called the presumption of innocence.

That clarification having been made, let's hope we start weeding out the corrupt politicians regardless their party affiliation.

Last, Dino makes a good point about the Left wing tactics.

Christie is BS-ing Us: Etc Etc Etc

What I see in this "challenge" is just more self serving partisan political/PR crap.

I suspect that there are hundreds of corrupt officials of BOTH parties in this state who are convictable if aggressively investigated/charged/prosecuted.

I also suspect that Christie and Rabner both have tons of leads (from many citizens/employees who have tried to blow the whistle on corruption) that are not being followed up on.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong! Let's see two hundred prosecutions and convictions in the next year; please! All ya gotta do is follow the money and turn over the rocks.

If ANYBODY of any Party is betraying the public trust/breaking laws I want them in JAIL!

In NJ that would likely mean more Democrats in jail than Republicans, and that's fine with me.

The far larger problem is that most of the morally/ethically corrupt/criminal behaviour is actually LEGAL: it's called pay to play and it's how the pols pay for their campaigns...and it's why their loyalty is the the big money and not to the individual voters.

The idiots who actually break the law are the just the most incompetent crimunils; the really clever bastards can screw us all LEGALLY!!!

PS How any Republican in NJ can complain about the corruption here while blithely supporting the most corrupt Presidency in the history of the USA is pathetic and hypocritical.

Here's a Nixon Republican who I would actually vote for!!

Lento great comic relief!!

For anyone with the brains not to take him seriously!!

04/27/07 3:29 pm

If Christie is serious....

He should send investigators and interview all retired teachers and administrators from the Union City School district. The administrators, of course, will need to be granted immunity to get them to talk. If Christie does this he will have years of cases to pursue against Brian Stack and the rest of the corrupt Hudson County Democrats.

PS BIll

I actually agree with you on Union City/Hudson County...the difference between us is that I want that same level of scrutiny/prosecutorial vigor applied to Bergen and to EVERY other County in the State!

I hate to break the news to you but there are lots of corrupt Republicans too.

This isn't a partisan question.

It's about what's legal/moral.

If you think that my take on this is "comic"; then I submit that you're more about getting petty partisan revenge than pursuing justice....we've had enough of that crap in New Jersey.

04/27/07 1:51 pm

Christie not serious at all

He starts investigations, gets a headline, and then nothing happens. But at least he is not as bad a U.S. Attorney as Bush's pal Johnny Sutton, who seems to be more intent on locking up U.S. Border Patrol Agents on trumped up charges than going after drug smugglers. Impeach Bush? Only if the reason is that he violated his oath by refusing to close the border with Mexico and stop the invasion occurring there. If that were the reason I would say yes!

04/27/07 6:28 pm

Ah, Dino ...

You say that Christie is even handed in his investigations, then you say that we are shouting him down because he is picking apart liberals.

Which is it?

Oh, I forgot. Consistency isn't necessary after you sip the Kool Aid.

And how is it that posting a comment on a political web site is "shouting down" anyone? How is it that asking a question at a town meeting, politely, is "shouting down" anyone?

Sounds like one of those kids who throws rocks on the playground and then cries foul when the other kids defend themselves.

4 Subpoenas vs 1000: Shocking!!!

Well, it looks like the rats are starting to desert the sinking ship.

Check out this understated editorial: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/29/opinion/29sun1.html?em&ex=1178078400&e...

Even George Tenet is spilling the beans on how the Bush's invasion of Iraq was "in the can"...

Here's another nice snippet...

<blockquote>"Mr. Bush’s supporters are already arguing that Congress’s much-needed investigations are politically motivated and backward looking. Actually, the baldly political act was the Republicans’ refusing to do their constitutional duty of oversight for the last six years. Mr. Waxman said his panel issued four subpoenas to the Bush administration under Republican leadership. The same leadership issued more than 1,000 subpoenas to the Clinton administration."</blockquote>

This administration will only look more and more ugly as time passes and bright LIGHT is shed into the dark stinky corners and crevices.

If George Tenet has any sense he'll return the medal Bush gave him....that honor was tainted the moment Bush took us to war under fallacious pretexts.

a pop.  Although this year, it was represented the cost went up to $1,200.
