Bergen GOP fundraiser quits in protest

Bergen County Republican Finance Chairman Joseph Caruso has resigned in protest to GOP County Chairman Guy Talarico's handling of the 40th legislative district. Talarico dumped nine-term Assemblyman David Russo from the organization line and his backing a local ticket headed by State Senate candidate Todd Caliguire.

Caruso says that when he accepted the finance role, it was "with the express understanding that we would be working to unify the party and to use our resources to mount credible, professional campaigns against Democrats.

"Your decision to instigate and encourage an unnecessary and disastrous Primary Election in District 40 demonstrates to me that you have a far different agenda than the one I originally understood." Caruso wrote in a letter to Talarico. "There is no way a Primary in District 40 makes strategic sense for the GOP. It is difficult to understand how we can allow two hard-working and valuable incumbents – who have generously supported the Bergen GOP financially -- to be challenged by candidates who have demonstrated repeated failure at the polls. The Primary battle that you sanctioned in District 40 has succeeded only in further dividing the party and diverting time, money and attention from real opportunities to mount challenges in other districts and towns."

Personal agendas are hurting Republicans throughout the state as they seek to regain control of the State Senate, Caruso says.

"I do not wish to waste my time and effort bolstering personal agendas and feeding vendettas. Nor do I wish to watch the money I have helped raise for the BCRO -- which has amounted to a considerable sum -- be squandered beating up on fellow Republicans," said Caruso. "I do not wish to be party to efforts that only make the Democrats’ job easier in November."

Talarico is backing Caliguire, a former Freeholder who ran for County Executive and Governor, for the seat of retiring State Sen. Henry McNamara. He is also supporting Caliguire's running mates for Assembly: '06 U.S. Senate candidate John Ginty and Wayne Councilman Joseph Schweighardt.

The organization line in Essex and Passaic counties went to Senate candidate Kevin O'Toole, an Assemblyman; Russo and Wayne Mayor Scott Rumana for the Assembly.

Good Call

Good for Caruso on this one. Somebody needs to step up to the plate and save the Republican Party in Bergen before it becomes as irrelevant as the Hudson County GOP.

Its About Time!

Its about time someone put the Republican party first. Mr. Caruso I salute you for showing others that by being a part of the BCRO is not enough if the BCRO is not going to make the right descions. Hopefully more Republicans will follow suit to help the entire party and we can turn this blue state red in no time at all.

04/11/07 4:40 pm

Talarico is a disgrace.

If you didn't know better, you would think Talarico is intentionally sabatoging the GOP. The party needs a new chairman now. The fact he could not or did not recruit legislative candidates in 36 is beyond explanation. The party is crumbling and he's responsible.

Too many Good Folks are getting hurt

Enough is enough...after last years disgrace Joe and a few brave men and women. tried to bring all sides together. They offered an "olive branch" and a live boat to the Titanic and the Captain hit them over the head with it.

04/11/07 5:01 pm

Caruso

BCRO spending money to fight other GOP'ers in this District is such a waste of time and money.

What is Talarico's fascination w/ Caliguire? He's been lackluster the past 2 campaigns.

04/11/07 5:06 pm

Dino, Caruso's resignation

Dino,

Caruso's resignation is one of the best things that could happen. Caruso is a dividing force in Bergen County GOP, since he has sided with the RINO herd that bolted from the ticket last year.

As soon as the RINOs are expelled the GOP they will start winning elections because they will once again stand for principles. Now, the only reason Republicans want to win is so they get to spend our money and give out jobs. We can do better and we shall do better without the likes of Caruso.

Nobody in 36????

Did Guy lose Vince Micco's phone number??? What the hell is that!!?? What is going on?

04/11/07 5:18 pm

Benedict Talarico

Does anyone else suspect that Joe F has promised Guy something after Guy destroys whats left of the BCRo?. I hear they meet twice a month at The Stoneyhill Inn.

RED PURGE NEEDED

REAL REPUBLICANS! ITS TIME WE PURGE THIS MESS! I WOULD RATHER BE RED THAN DEAD OR SHALL I SAY BLUE. V

04/11/07 5:34 pm

How bout that team spirit?

I was pumped to see Caruso involved...he was trying to blast the Bergen GOP with youth and enthusiasm. I don't know everything that has been happening behind closed doors but it's really a shame to lose Caruso who could have helped shaped the party in Bergen to start winning again. Politics is a team sport and when Republicans in NJ stop fighting each other maybe we can start to fight Democrats.

Help not Hinder

It's quite obvious that you are one of the old guard that needs to be shook up into the modern day and age to face some hard reality.  The schism as it may be phrased started years ago (BCRO/BCRI)...hmmm didn't Talarico take control around then???  You do the math!!!

We all know that Caruso is a fresh energetic face trying to revitalize a rather lackluster party.  It is through younger thoughts and energy that will help us reinstitute our party back into its rightful place...On Top!!!

We cannot cling any longer unto the old regime and we must do away with our old thought modalities.  We need to keep an open mind and utilize our so called "age old wisdom", thus embracing the new energy and help it...not hinder it.

I promise you this, the Talarico regime will surely fall and a lot sooner then you think.

We must now learn to swim with different strokes lest we be washed away in the new torrent that is forming.

Uncle Reltih

04/11/07 5:56 pm

This is exactly what we don't need!

This is exactly the kind of attitude we no longer need in Bergen County.  The juvenille name calling and the pointing of the fingers needs to stop! This is not helping the Republican effort in Bergen County nor is it rasing any money for the party.  Regardless of how conservative or moderate you are we should be defeding our republicans and not burning them at the stake!  Joe Caruso joined the fight to help mend our broken party back together in Bergen and this so called, "RINO" helped out the cause by turning the lights and the phone lines back on at the BCRO! Oh! One last thing...Joe Caruso also helped raise the money to pay the rent for many months to come! Why don't you focus your name calling and energy on the real enemies and leave your own party alone?!

04/11/07 6:00 pm

GROW UP TALARICO!!

Somebody help me out...... is this a political party or a high school prom committee?! We should all take a step back and examine why we are or aren't involded in the political movement in NJ to begin with. Apparently some such as Talarico are involved soley to inflate their own wallets and egos. We already have a party dedicated to that in this country. They're called Democrats. Talarico should do everyone a favor and step aside to let someone who is more motivated capable and take the reigns. I support Caruso in his resignation. Whlo wants to sit around and fight over the scraps left by the Dems?!! The Bergen GOP needs to grow up!!!!

04/11/07 6:00 pm

Nominating Committee?

I know Talarico talks about established practice of nomination being the Chairman selecting, but was there even a nominating committee per their by-laws? It's unfortunate he's clinging to the February 1 deadline to file intent, since McNamara didn't announce until the middle of March. And if Russo really was the only one to file intent by February 1, he should be the only one on the line. They seriously need to revise those things, there's nothing to deal with a situation like this and there's no provision for removal of officers.

04/11/07 6:03 pm

the facts !!!

Joe, Mark Vogel and even the Irish guy who worked for Caliguire last year reached out to all sides. They spent thousands of their own money and worked their butts off... for what ? Its obvious that the old guard don't want bright new faces in the party

Carusos Resignation

In response to "Republican Consience".

Are you Republican Conscience or Republican Unconcious?!?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are ignorant. Joe Caruso has been the first person to come along in a long time that not only brought people within the party in Bergen together but brought fresh new energetic faces into the mix. Oh yeah, He also helped save the BCRO from getting tossed out on the street and actualy organized events that made money instead of lost money. Before Caruso I wouldn't even let the Bergen GOP balance my checkbook. By the way, what have you done to promote party unity. You might look better in blue...think about it.

04/11/07 6:11 pm

Caruso

This really saddens me. I don't know Joe Caruso but have only heard wonderful things about his abilities. I personally plead for him to reconsider. I too have wondered what is Guy thinking? But,if you ask him, he will tell you what his thought processes are. We don't always agree with the person who makes the calls but after all this isn't a democracy. It is a Republic. We elect someone to make decisions and support them even if we think better choices exist. I pledge to work for and with whomever our members,in their infinite wisdom elect,as chairman. For now he is the Guy in charge (pun intended)and we should all pull together. Praying for unity but feeling fractured.

04/11/07 6:37 pm

Guy in Charge???

Are you for real?  Guy has not been in charge from the beginning.  Before Caruso, the last finance chairman who knew how to raise money for the BCRo was Henry Amoroso.  The BCRI had Alan Marcus raising money.  If Talarico were smart, and with a baseball team of rug rats, there can't be much in the way of smarts, he would ask Alan Marcus and Caruso to manage the party.  Between them, there may be a way of saving this party.

Oh, and by the way, TALARICO MUST GO!!!

04/11/07 7:32 pm

Andy you are wrong

Ask Guy what he is thinking>?

Have you seen the web site lately??

Great strategic plan. Cardinale is weak and may lose, so why not fight in 40 to keep a precious seat in Bergen. What about District 38 ? Hmm? Well what about the rest of the Goddamn county and State for that matter

Oh and by the way Senator Cardinale is not weak at all! He will destroy the Dems.

So you stick with the leader. Like sticking with Nero as Rome burns to the ground.

V

04/11/07 7:52 pm

easy fellas

If Guy is not in charge who is? I am not a member of the BCRO. I am just a foot soldier. If the county comittee members want Guy out let them act. Otherwise grab an oar and start rowing. Unless and until the county comittee acts what do you suggest, that we all quit in protest? Not me I am not waiting for orders, I am heading to the battlefield. Hope to see you all there

04/11/07 8:07 pm

even Joe Ferriero knows best

even now Joe Ferriero has put a stop to his own in fighting against Weinberg... Maybe its time for Joe to call Guy before even more good candidates are destroyed .

04/11/07 8:16 pm

Andy Gause/Republican Conscience

Andygause and Republican Conscience's comments feed the apathy/inactivity Guy's reign at the BCRO has spread throughout Bergen. Guy has consistently separated the BCRO and other party candidates by mindless arguing over fictitious points of view. YOU WIN NOTHING BY ARGUING.THE RESENTMENT AND ILL WILL YOU STIR UP LASTS MUCH LONGER THAN ANY MOMENTARY CHANGE OF OPINION.  Whereas Mr. Caruso (WHO GETS "IT" BY THE WAY)  understands it is much more powerful to get others to agree with you through your actions!!!!Obviously you dont get "it" Andy or Republic!!!! You enter action with boldness and thats what he is doing!!!!Guy raises suspicion and angst. Joe raises party participation and money. Guy has reduced Republicanism to a Soap Opera for Democrats to ridicule. You will miss Mr. Caruso's efforts when the BCRO is holding meetings draped in blankets and reading by candlelight (or have you forgotten!!!)

04/11/07 8:47 pm

Caurso should revitalize Passaic County

Doesn't anyone get it??? Caruso does not live in Bergen. He lives here in Wayne. What is his motivation for trying to organize Bergen? Why doesn't he concentrate on his own backyard? Talarico accepted Caruso as Finance Chairman (bad move) in good faith, and now obviously Caruso has stabbed Talarico in the back with his 8 paragraph resignation press release. When is Talarico going to learn?????

04/11/07 8:56 pm

Caruso and Talarico

Trenton.. your voice is weak and so is your thinking... who cares where Caruso lives as long as he wants to beat Democrats. The problem with the B Bergen  GOP "old guard" is that they are a group of geopgraphic elitists who care mopre about locales than they do about winning. The Talaricoites are great at complaining about anyone younger or more energetic than they are....but don't ask them to actually do anything that might win a race.  Caruso is seizing a void left in the party... the lack of leadership created in part by Talarico and his endless whining...How much more of this do you want to take?

For those who don't get it.. the object of politics is winning... that's all that counts.. there are no prizes for second place...It's not about RINO's or Reaganites....it's about winning elections so you can then hopefully do some good for the people who elected you.

04/11/07 9:26 pm

Thanks for setting me straight?

Thanks, I welcome the guidance. As a neophyte my opinions are insignificant. Where did I go wrong? Did I at least get something right?

 1. I don't know Joe Caruso but have only heard wonderful things about his abilities. 2. Guy is the county chair. 3. We don't always agree with the person who makes the calls but after all this isn't a democracy. 4.it is still a Republic. 5.We elect someone to make decisions and support them even if we think better choices exist. 6.I should work with whomever our members, in their infinite wisdom elect,as chairman. 7.I am just a foot soldier. 8.It is the county comittee who decide the chairman. 9. we should all pull together.

I am really quite sure I was right on 4,7,9. Yours in liberty and the right to control your own property  Humbly awaiting correction

They do have the ability to yank him. Article III, Section 4. The grounds for recall are: i. support of a candidate of another party; ii. any violation of Title 19 of the Revised Statutes. iii. failure to responsibly carry out the duties and obligations of membership or office.

Thanks fretz I thought i was right on that one too. It is up to the county committee.

Can any of you arbiters of

Can any of you arbiters of Republicanism define a Republican? That makes for a nice homework assignment for all you superior intellects. What does a Republican stand for? What are their beliefs?

Our so call Republicans certainly don't stand for lower taxes, nor do they stand for smaller government, nor do they stand for personal responsibility, nor personal freedom, so what are they? Half of them don't even stand for the traditional family or even care about the 4K babies being slaughtered each day through abortion. They even allowed the 1st and 2nd amendment to be trashed without a a fight. So what are they?

We need to screen our candidates to ensure that they are Republicans if we ever expect to win elections.

Thank you for the enlightening narrative. Just what we need another sideliner that's first to open their mouth and last to roll up their sleeves. Keep up the great work. Surely we'll come to a resolution soon with insight like yours.

Republican Unconcious:

Spare us you rhetoric. The great republican party is not YOUR definition of it. You sound like a wannabe politician that might have lost a race or two. Maybe you should run in District 40?! You probably don't realize it but YOU are part of the problem. While you are mulling over the definition of a "real" republican, Democrats are raising money and organizing and strategizing succesful campaigns that WIN! Don't worry you're not the only one that needs to be weeded out. There are plenty of others with your "losing attitude".

Now please tell us Just what have the so called Republican Consience wing  done for the BCRO over the last year ??? Your so called State Rep Collette who ??? HAS NOT ATTENDED ONE FUNCTION IN OVER A YEAR, let alone give one red cent to the cause. Just how many new members did you sign up last year.? How many doors have you knocked on etc etc?. Politics 101 is won on the ground and not from your high horse.( time to wake up, get off your high horse and beat the donkey) 2007 motto = Lead, Follow or get out of the way.

04/12/07 11:03 am

Republican conscience, you

Republican conscience, you are correct very few can describe the nature of this creation other than to call themselves republicans. There are also those who call themselves democrats apparently in opposition to republicans. The differences are severe and I would urge everyone to make certain they are on the correct team In a democracy the majority rules, and government is expected to protect the people. Individuals are expected to surrender some of their rights to property and perhaps a few of their rights to liberty in order to facilitate this goal. In a republic the rights of an individual supercede the will of the majority and Government is expected to protect those rights. Rights and liberty are the basis of a republic and against no amount of public good may they be offset. In a republic of 3 wolves and a brave little pig the three wolves may not vote to eat our hero no matter how hungry they are. However in a democracy the majority rules and it's pork chops for lunch.

04/12/07 11:27 am

Unconcious- YOU BLUE BIRD

The Republican Party includes large numbers of fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, neoconservatives, libertarians, and members of the Religious Right. The Republican Party is the more socially conservative and economically libertarian of the two major parties. The party generally supports lower taxes and limited government in some economic areas, while preferring government intervention in others. In the 1980s, the Republican Party was more strongly libertarian. In his 1981 inaugural address, Republican President Ronald Reagan summed up his belief in limited government when he said, "In the present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."[1] Since 1980, the GOP has contained what George Will calls "unresolved tensions between, two flavors of conservatism -- Western and Southern." The Western brand, wrote Will, "is largely libertarian, holding that pruning big government will allow civil society -- and virtues nourished by it and by the responsibilities of freedom -- to flourish." The Southern variety, however, reflects a religiosity based in evangelical and fundamentalist churches that is less concerned with economics and more with moralistic issues, such as opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage. Noting the waning influence of libertarian philosophy on contemporary Republican ideology, Will describes the current Republican Party as "increasingly defined by the ascendancy of the religious right." I GUESS YOU DON'T REALIZE YOU LIVE IN NEW JERSEY. OR MAYBE YOU DO, AND YOU ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY CHALLENGED..

04/12/07 11:33 am

The Republican party was

The Republican party was created in 1854 in opposition to the Kansas Nebraska Act that would have allowed the expansion of slavery into Kansas. The Republican Party is the Freedom Party. We already have the Democrats who use the media and other forums to spew their propoganda and tell us how to think while they rob us blind. On a smaller scale who wants to be under the thumb of a bloated ego maniac running a failing organization that exists (in his mind) for his own personal agendas. That is not my idea of freedom. Some of you (unconcious and others) sound like your describing a socialist or even communist organization when you describe you thoughts on being republican. This is The United States of America and more specifically (as H5N1 mentioned) New Jersey. If you're not willing to accept a broad spectrum of ideas and beliefs within the party then you don't have a winning mindset. If NJ gets crushed by the dems again you have yourselves to thank. In fact, maybe you and those who are in tune with your unique mindsets should consider relocating. To another party or maybe even another state.

Republican Unconcious;

You're a sad piece of work. I can almost sense the pleasure you get out of all this.

I'd rather be a so called "RINO" than a BLUE BIRD such as yourself.

You are pretty gutsy when it comes to taking on people in your own  party but I seriously doubt you confront Democrats with the same vigor.

You are a great tool for the Democratic Party and a virus in ours.

You are now officially a member of the Blue Birds. There is no hope for you.

Bravo, finally someone who gets it. It's all about winning and maintaining common sense. Our patron Barry Goldwater would tell you that. Goldwater was the man Reagan idolized. Everett Dirksen, who may called a liberal, was a fiscal conservative and a social moderate, as was Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan is probably turning in his grave as the neo-right uses his name in vain. He was a man who was strong willed but would be open to change. Today's Conservative Republicans have one attitude, it's our way or no way. We need to fight that philosphy. Let us all unite and work for the good of our party.
