A new nationwide poll shows that, among young voters, support for the Republican Party is in a free fall. On every issue about which respondents were questioned, the Democratic Party earned far more support than the Republican Party. And these were not just divisive social issues; the Republican Party is losing on taxes and terrorism, two of our party’s signature issues. In order to win back the support of the next generation of voters, Republicans have to speak out on the issues important to young people and put themselves forward in media settings that reach young audiences.
Instead, it looks like the major Republican candidates for president are doing just the opposite. Bailing on the upcoming YouTube/CNN debate – a format designed specifically for young voters – is a big mistake. If we are going to beat the Democrats among this key demographic, we must wage our battle of ideas in every venue presented to us. To forfeit the support of the next generation of voters is illogical and strategically foolish. I hope that all of the Republican candidates for president participate in the YouTube/CNN debate and double their efforts to earn the support of young voters.

Your right but your wrong
Ms. Whitman, You are correct in saying that You tube.com is a great vehicle for a debate series. But if I was a candidate, you couldn't pay me enough to go on CNN and debate. First, the questions they choose are idiotic. Second, the candidate get a very short time to provide an answer. We all know the candidates and their positions. The networks need to provide a 15 minute one on one "round robin" type of debate series where only two candidate debate each other, then another two, and so on.
I wonder...
if any of the debate questions will be from one of those ground zero workers who have suffered due to the toxins in the air in lower Manhattan.
Whitman
I find it a bit disconserting that the former Governor says that taxes and terrorism are two of the [GOP's] signature issues. Terrorism should not be a signature issue, and in no way should the threat of terrorism be trivialized or politicized. However, the GOP has done just that in every election cycle since 2002. When it comes to taxes the fact remains that the current GOP Administration has done absolutly nothing to help the under 35 generation. Middle-class taxes are high, student loan intrest rates are high, gas prices are high, wages are low, rents are growing higher and higher and forget enven trying to buy a home. Furthermore, most polls indicate that the so called social issues of abortion right, gay rights and embrionic stem cell research are far more generational in there breakdown. And most civically minded and or politically engaged persons under 35 either directly support a woman's right to chose, embronic stem cell research, and gay rights. Does it really come as a surprise that young voters identify with the Democratic Party over the Republican Party that has sided against their values and loaded the dice against them. Young voters are siding with the Democratic Party because a few Republicans are going to miss a You Tube debate that hardly anyone will watch, they are siding with the Democratic Party because the Democratic Party has shown an intrest in addressing issues that young voters are concerned about.

Sounds like the aftermath of those DEMOCROOK Party administrations.

While Democrats are certainly not innocent in the mismanagment of public money and trust, you cannot not dismiss what Bush/Cheney and their ilk have done to working class people and the poor in this country. You provided no actual rebuttle rather a "Come on" response. I'll supose then that you agree with my post that loans, taxes are high and wages are low. As much as I would like to see the NJ Statehouse deal with these issues it is inexcusable that Bush et all have not. Whitman was addressing a national issue-I responded with a national-based comment. However, there would be no convincing you regardless-your rather warrentless hostile tone conveys that message. But hey if you like the kool-aid keep on drinking.
FREE FALL CHRISTIE
The Republicans are in "free fall" largely due to people like you, Christie. People have awaken to the fact that the Republican party is responsible for the the problems facing our country and our state today. The days of your GOP "Arrogance is Everything" style of politics is over. The people just won't tolerate it any more. The GOP is going to pay dearly for thumbing their collective noses at those that they were elected to represent. The Democratic earthquake started with the last congressional election and it's going to rumble straight through the presidential election.
