CONAWAY/CONNERS BILL AUTHORIZING STATE SALE OF EDGEWATER PARK BARRACKS ADVANCES
(TRENTON) - An Assembly panel today released a bill sponsored by Assemblymen Herbert C. Conaway, Jr., MD, and Jack Conners that would allow the state treasurer to sell a former State Police barracks in Edgewater Park, Burlington County to a private buyer.
"The unused barracks is real estate that could be put to better use as a property-tax-yielding ratable," said Conaway (D-Delanco). "Now, instead of a state-owned eyesore, the people of Edgewater Park will have a piece of land that will generate new revenue and other economic benefits."
The sale of the barracks and its surrounding 3.76 acres, which has been declared surplus land, would net approximately $1.028 million, which would be deposited into the state's general revenue fund. The sale would be conducted in accordance with the terms and conditions approved by the State House Commission.
"In these lean fiscal times, every infusion of money to the state helps to reduce the likelihood of painful service cuts or mitigate tax increases," said Conners (D-Pennsauken), a member of the Assembly State Government Committee. "By selling off unused tracts of land, the state generates revenue and municipalities regain land that can be preserved or developed for increased ratables."
The Assembly State Government Committee unanimously released the bill. It now heads to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post it for a floor vote.
