VAS DECLARED 'FRIEND OF EDUCATION' BY STATE FEDERATION OF TEACHERS
Annual Award Recognizes Legislative Excellence in Supporting Education
(PERTH AMBOY) - The New Jersey State Federation of Teachers (NJSFT) recently selected Assemblyman Joseph Vas as the 2006 "Friend of Education."
"A good education is the foundation upon which successful lives are built," said Vas, a member of the Assembly Education Committee. "As legislators, we are responsible for ensuring that the educational foundation our children receive is as sound as it can be."
The Friend of Education Award for 2006 was presented to the assemblyman by Anna Sciacca, president of NJSFT and president of the NJSFT Garfield chapter, and by John M. Abeigon, vice president of NJSFT and vice president of the Newark Teacher's Union, AFT Local 481 as part of the 64th annual convention of the NJSFT, which took place on April 28 and 29.
Vas was chosen as this year's recipient based on criteria including his voting record on education issues, his accessibility to individual AFT locals and the NJSFT at large and having positions on labor, healthcare and tax and pension issues in line with NJSFT. The educators' organization also praised Vas' work on the Assembly Education and Budget Committees and the Joint Committee on Public Schools.
"It is truly an honor to be recognized and named by the Federation of Teachers as a 'friend of education,'" said Vas. "I hope to continue to be a friend of education - and to continue working closely with groups like NJSFT during this legislative session."
