WISNIEWSKI COMMENDS GOVERNOR'S AGGRESSIVE PLANS TO PROTECT NJ PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Increase in Awareness of Pedestrian Safety 'Can't Come Soon Enough'
(SAYREVILLE) - Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee Chairman John Wisniewski today applauded Governor Jon Corzine's plan to create a five-year, $74 million initiative to improve pedestrian safety in New Jersey.
"With fatal traffic accidents up 18 percent over last year, an increased focus on driver awareness and pedestrian safety can't come soon enough," said Wisniewski (D-Middlesex). "Thanks to the recent refinancing of our state's Transportation Trust Fund, we now have the means to implement many practical and common sense programs that will make our state's roadways, motorists, and - most importantly - our pedestrians safer."
According to the Governor's Office, the Pedestrian Safety Initiative consists of a three-pronged strategy designed to encourage motorists and pedestrians share the road safely, through improvements in engineering, education, and enforcement. Specifics on the Governor's initiative can be found on the Web at http://www.state.nj.us/governor/news/news/approved/20060918.html.
