GREGG TO ATTORNEY GENERAL FARBER:
DO THE TAXPAYERS A FAVOR AND RESIGNJuly 18, 2006
Assemblyman Guy Gregg/973-584-5422
Assembly Republican Office/609-292-5339
Assemblyman Guy Gregg today said news reports that Attorney General Zulima Farber has hired a high-powered criminal lawyer to represent her in an investigation into whether she inappropriately pressured police officers into voiding her boyfriend's traffic citations is just further proof that she needs to resign.
"I, like the majority of New Jersey residents, am outraged by the horrific conduct of our state's top law enforcement official," said Gregg, R-Sussex, Morris, and Hunterdon. "Charges that Attorney General Farber used her position to bully police officers into giving her boyfriend special treatment are very disturbing. At best, the Attorney General will be found completely incompetent, at worst she will be found guilty of a crime."
Media outlets have reported that in a state vehicle and on state time, Attorney General Farber improperly interfered with police officers attempting to give her live-in boyfriend, Hamlet Goore, a traffic summons for driving with a suspended license and driving an uninsured vehicle.
Today, news sources said that Farber has retained the services of Gerald Krovatin, a defense attorney that has represented other political officials who have been accused of inappropriately using their position.
"Attorney General Farber lacks the ability to adequately fulfill the duties of her office," said Gregg. "She seems too busy defending her own questionable actions to focus on the awesome responsibilities of her office. If she has any self-respect at all she will step aside and let someone more capable fill her position."
Gregg noted that at great expense to the taxpayers, the judge overseeing the probe has assembled a panel of investigators and lawyers to determine whether Attorney General Farber or the Fairview police broke any laws or violated ethics rules.
"I am relieved that Attorney General Faber's actions are being thoroughly examined but honestly this incident should have never happened in the first place," Gregg declared. "Not only has the entire credibility of the Attorney General’s Office been jeopardized, but now the taxpayers will be asked to foot the bill for what will surely be a costly investigation. It's time she does the taxpayers a favor. Spare us further cost, spare New Jersey further embarrassment and just resign."
